Well, this is just damn sad. One of my all-time faves.

Very sad news.

I saw the sisters perform on a number of occasions at the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, and they were wonderful nights. Kate was my favourite songwriter of the two. Not all that prolific but she wrote some wonderful stuff.

Very sad news indeed. I love her distinctive voice. And only 63 years old.

Wow. Agreed. She's a favorite of mine too. She never adhered to any of the rules as a songwriter. "Matapedia" and "I Eat Dinner" are brilliant examples. Wow.

Another big fan here...and five minutes ago I was introducing my wife to the gorgeous McGarrigle/Wainwright family harmonizing on "What'll I Do," and then I clicked over here to find this. I've got "Talk to Me of Mendocino" on now.

Found this very fine new Kate McG tune on the sisters' Web site. She must have been pretty sick when she performed this, but it's a hell of a performance.

Such a sad shocker to hear about Kate's passing.

"Talk to Me of Mendocino", "Heart Like A Wheel", "My Town", "Kiss and Say Goodbye", you might as well say the whole first album is flawless. I got all the early stuff on vinyl but only their debut and The McGarrigle Hour on disc, so it's time to rectify that.

Listening to some live McGarrigles performances archived at NRP (including a really good 1993 "Fresh Air" interview) I'm thinking it's time for a posthumous live album. Given how charming their live shows were, I'm a little surprised it doesn't exist already.
