The Go-Betweens seemed right on the cusp of making it to the next level as band with 16LL. Opening for R.E.M. certainly exposed them to new fans. Maybe BB was at fault for not pushing the videos to MTV and albums on college radio? Does anyone have the sales fiqures for it? | ||

Kev, It certainly didn't have the punch that the previous albums had without Lindy more involved in the creative process. It almost sounds like a side project in retrospect. Songs that had great lyrics, but that didn't quiet fit the style of the band. | ||

I think it's funny how they give a different slant to the Australian media than they did to the English media. The relationships in the band were never mentioned in any of the English music papers, whereas they are in the RAM article referred to above. I have to say, they came as something of a shock to me when I read about them in David Nichols book. They also tended to talk down their English experience in the Aussie press, whereas in the English press they tended to talk down their homeland - insular, macho culture etc. I guess that's understandable but you couldn't get away with that these days. I think the seeds of their destruction are evident in the RAM interview - Amanda and Lindy being pissed off at being sidelined in the demoing and recording of 16LL. Well the boys weren't for turning and that was it .... imho | ||

Or for Willsteed not to join the group & have Grant play bass. There's no way they'd have achieved that lush, polished sound with the original 3-piece in place + Amanda. Thanks for the link, Martin. | ||

I remember an NME piece where RF stated his relationship with Lindy was over, but they still met up for a 'glamorous f*** on the stairs' from time to time. That phrase has always stuck in my mind. As has 'I taught Prince all his dance moves'. |
