Does anyone know who writes the arrangements to the strings for the pre-1990 go-betweens? Perhaps Lindy can chime in.

Particularly, on The House That Jack Built and Clarke Sisters, the strings drive the tension of the song. Did Amanda come up with all that? Or was it Robert? Or is it a collective effort where Grant or Robert knew the mood they wanted to create and then Amanda or a producer wrote the arrangement?

Not to answer for Lindy, but in David Nichols's book, she is quoted as saying that she and Amanda worked together to come up with the complementary string/drum arrangements on "Tallulah" (especially noticeable on "Jack"). I doubt the boys had much to do with the string arrangements...beyond deciding to add a string player to the band, that is.

As far as Liberty Belle goes; On the Live in London CD Robert introduces the string section saying that three-quarters of them worked on that album. He then says that one of them did the arrangements for it but I can't remember which.

audrey riley has been involved with arrangments on a slew of great records over the years. she even did backing vocals and probably some other stuff on cathal coughlan's most recent (and totall brilliant) album "the sky's awful blue."
