The Church - Starfish (remastered 2 disc version - third time I've bought this album)

L.J. Hill - Namoi Mud (he has an Irish grandfather and Cherokee and Aboriginal parents, which, along with a comparison to Kev Carmody, was enough to make me want to buy it)

The Microphones - Live in Kyoto and Nagoya

Cam Butler - Go Slow

Jay Farrar - ThirdShiftGrottoSlack EP

Jackson Browne - Lawyers In Love

The Earlies - These Were The Earlies

Love And Rockets - Seventh Dream Of Teenage Heaven

Waco Brothers - Electric Waco Chair

Snowdogs - Deep Cuts, Fast Remedies

The last eight were 99c each and in three of the cases I have no idea what they sound like, but I figured I'd give them a shot at that price.

andreas, the xx album is a real grower. it just washed over me the first few times i heard it, but its very subtle and the tunes really start to make an impression after repeated plays. i keep reading comparisons with young marble giants but they were much looser and mor diy than the xx. if they progess in the right way they could be a band worth keeping an eye on.

kevin,
I really love this album after the first listen. YMG came in my mind when I heared the songs as well. They were one of my favourites in the 80's and they way are singing is similiar - not the production...
Why XX decided to make "Basic Space" the single is something I cannot understand at the moment. It is not a typical single track for me.

yes, xx sounds exciting. ymg? yes, andreas. and the one or other song reminds me also a bit on the fabulous 'black box recorder'. especially on their first record 'england made me'.

Padraig, maybe you know this already but black box recorder was a group which included Luke Haines from The Auteurs. I think they may have had a female vocalist mind you, rather than Luke Haines singing.

The BBR question was from Andreas Severins Kevin! I have some of their stuff and like it. I preferred his work with The Auteurs and The Baader Meinhof Complex though.

richmond fontaine - we used to think the river......
this 8th album could be their best(i only have this and the last 3), getting seriously well reviewed. i reckon folks on here would like it, frank is the only other person on here i have heard speak about them

Rustie - Something in the Buckie does not compute. compilation of Rustie singles - seriously funky f~cked up dance music.

Cold Cave - Love Comes Close. glad i bought this when i did on their own label, looks like they wont be pressing any more as Matador records have jumped on it but wont release it till november. sounds like new order colliding with lcd soundsystem, with vocals similar to that bloke from magnetic fields - but with a far more diy type production. sleeper hit of the year.

the feelies - only life

derrick may - the innovator. like it says on the tin, old skool detroit techno

radiohead - kid a. dug this out because i read the pitchfork review of the 2009 re-release today. they gave it a 10/10. i fully expect this to be their album of the decade when they announce the results next month as part of the PK2 thingy they are running just now.

V/A - The Birth Of Rock 'n' Roll (two disc comp, including the first rock 'n' roll record, Rocket 88 by Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats, with Ike Turner on vocals)

Tex Perkins - Songs From My Black Cattle Dog (a best of compilation)

Lift To Experience - The Texas Jerusalem Crossroads (got it for $10)

Field Music - Tones Of Town

British Sea Power - Man Of Aran (it includes a DVD of the film, which I've never previously seen)

The Richmond Fontaine has never done much on this message board but there songs are great; lyrical, melodic. I love the way Willy Vautlin (?) does his talking narrative.
This latest ism ore accessible than previous with a more of a band feel. I love it

The Cult - Love, 2 CD remaster. Played the first disc yesterday. After thinking the first song sounded a bit weird my ears got used to it and I thought it sounded great, very clear. This often happens to me with a very good remastering job.

Tum Fun Tum Fun.
I really think his muse abandoned him about 30 years ago(!) but I think his song on "The Sun Came Out" is one of the best on the album.
I got the album with Persuasion on it when it came out and was bitterly disappointed. I don't know whether you heard him on 702 last week(?) Padraig - abyssmal - I had to turn it off it was so embarrassing - he couldn't sing to save his life.
Bring on his brothers new album in January!

Geoff, disc 1 of the Tim Finn comp is great. Most of disc 2 is very good too, but it does taper off a bit towards the end. Die hard fans might hate the re-recorded tracks (I think there are eight of them) but I liked them (and didn't know the originals in half the cases anyway).

The second disc is stunning Joe. It's heartbreaking at times hearing those songs of a young man re-interpreted by the same man in middle age. It completely changes the meanings of some of the songs.

I have found two cool record shops here in Paris. In one, I got the Passage's "For All and None," *still sealed* (!) on vinyl, and at another shop I got the first pressing 7" (with cooler cover art) of "The Swimmer" by the Passions, and a minty copy of "Thank You" by the Pale Fountains, also 7".

Padraig, listening to 'Clangour' by Sin Fang Bous' as I type. :-)

German label but the artists/bands are from all over the place ( Germany, U.K., U.S.A., Iceland, Sweden, Belgium & Denmark.) A wonderful little label both musically and artistically. I think I have at least one title by every artist/band who records for them.

The title song--Echoes--has long been one of my very favorite Gene Clark songs, with its Leon Russell arrangement and even that damn off-pitch guitar. I assumed that the lyrics were fanciful poetry but it turns out that the song depicts very concrete scenes and specific persons from the mid-60s Sunset Strip scene. It's an amazing piece of work. The Byrds really lost out when they let him go.

Yes, I did buy Echoes after enjoying my recently purchased Dillard and Clark 2fer as well as Roadmaster. I bought No Other and White Light a few years ago. I can't comment on Echoes as well as Vespertine, Burial, and Heartbreaker as they haven't arrived yet.

Fans of Gene Clarke might be interested to hear Soulsaver's (featuring Mark Lanegan on vocals)epic take of his track "Some Misunderstanding" off their new album. Purist's might hate it but I'm loving it.

You seem to be buying a lot of the albums that I consider to be the best of the decade Michael! How did you find Vespertine?

Geoff,

Yes, I've been using your best of the decade post as a buying guide for the albums I've missed these last 10 years. I'm listening to Vespertine right now and I'm enthralled to say the least! It's almost like she used Kate Bush's The Sensual World as a launching point and reached a higher plain then even Kate could ever reach. I might rate it higer then Debut and Post. I'll get her 1997 album Homogenic album next. Strange, I bought The Sugarcubes "Life's Too Good" in 1988 when it was first released and waited another 20 years before I bought anything else by her, which was Debut. Maybe I'll check out the second and third Sugarcubes albums as well.

My gag would have been far funnier if Vespertine was a band (as I thought) rather than Bjork's album (cringe - sorry Geoff).

My sister has been raving about that Empire of the Sun thing with a bit of "hey, I know what's really hip" thrown in for good measure. I feel like saying, yeah, I saw Luke Steele YEARS ago in a WOLLONGONG PUB when he was in a MUCH better band called the Sleepy Jackson SIS!
Now wth that chip on my shoulder I can hardly ask her what it's like can I? What IS it like Padraig??

Sleepy Jackson is one of those groups I haven't gotten around to hearing yet, like the Cruel Sea.

They sound exactly like MGMT Geoff. But better, in my opinion. It's electronic pop, but done better than most do it.

I interviewed Luke Steele seven years ago. I found him just as strange as everyone else ever has. A very talented man though. I've just posted that interview up at www.myspace.com/padraigcollins

Steve Wynn & The Miracle 3 - Static Transmission (2 disc version)
Radiohead - Kid A (really. I've never owned this record before. I'm a very late convert to Radiohead. But now I'm a true believer)

YOU NEED TO GET THE SLEEPY JACKSON ALBUM PRONTO!!!!! One of the best Australian guitar pop albums ever(???).
I guess they don't exist anymore, David, but I think he will "reform" them when he feels like doing that sort of stuff again.
Just picked up the first 2 Sara Blasko ones and the rereleased Black Swan. I originally downloaded that last one from iTunes but it never sat with me that well (just like the original).

Hugh, in his wonderful generosity, just sent me a nice 7 song sample, from 2 EPs and one LP. Yes Hugh "Good Dancers" is extremely ELO! On first listen the tracks that appealed the most was were "This Day" from "Let Your Love be Love" and "Rain Falls For Wind" which is frankly fantastic.

Rain Falls For Wind is one of my favs. Randy, Personality is a bold attempt at intricate and complex melodies that although (IMHO) doesnt quite work for the whole album is nevertheless breathtaking in its effort. (not pretentious!) Not sure if the voice is good enough to sustain for the whole 13 songs. Lovers is warmer and friendly like a hug while Personality is more like a volvanic pop orgasm!

yes, they moved forward into the back. or so. this album is not spectacular. reduction. flutes instead of synthesizers, no ''rockers''. no roscoe or young bride. just can talk about my first impressions, and , yes, the songs creep into my mind. kind of sublimeness. some critics say it sounds like fairport convention, some compared it with the sound of the strawbs (btw: strawbs' from the witchwood is a great album!). for sure you can hear excerpts of all that stuff (and more) if you want. for the moment i like it, that's all.

I haven't kept track of the last 20 that I've bought. Those on the coffee table--which means most recently purchased and not yet filed--reflect a recent drift back into the depths of Australiana, no doubt partly inspired by reacquainting myself with a seldom-played antho of the quite-good-when-he-puts-his-mind-to-it Normie Rowe:

The Loved Ones--Magic Box
The Moffs--The Collection
MPD Limited--Legendary Go!! Recordings
Sleepy Jackson:
Let Your Love Be Love
Lovers
Come to This
Personality

and one vintage Kiwi artist:

Dinah Lee--The Viking Recordings 1964-1967

Steaming my way from Michigan is an official (!) copy of the Chills' Secret Box.

For some reason I stopped buying any Prince albums after I bought Dirty Mind and 1999, and I've got them both on vinyl and CD. I might have Purple Rain on vinyl now that I think of it. I do have the VHS copy of the movie, which I probably haven't played since Reagan was in office. Maybe I was pissed off that he broomed the Revolution. The Wendy and Lisa album from 1990, Eroica, is a pretty decent album which I listen to once a year or so.

Speaking of Eroica, Eroica Reisling from Washington state has been one of my favorite wines for the last 5 years! The quality is there year after year.

Rob, No "Sign O' the Times". I know it gets a lot of props as perhaps being his best. I just kind of stopped listening to Prince, King Creole and The Coconuts and The Time (and I was a huge fan of all three around 1982-84) post Purple Rain and fell deep into college rock of REM, Let's Active, The 'mats, Richard and Linda Thompson and all the Paisley Underground bands and their offshoots plus discovering Robyn Hitchcock (1985). That Wendy and Lisa album (Eroica) caught me by surprize though in 1990 as I had totally given up on all the Prince crowd.
Maybe I'll check out Sign “O” the Times one of these days.

As I've gone into at far too much length here, I've had a bit of a falling out with Prince after being a huge fan for years. Still love me some Kid Creole/August Darnell though...for the superhot, sophisticated grooves and songwriting, and because the Kid is a construction, a deliberate parody of an egotistical bullshit artist, so transparent one could never think for a second that Darnell shares his ideas. Whereas Prince believes his own jiveass bullshit through and through.

Wasn't the Prince thing the result of a legal fight with his label? I seem to recall that he didn't want to work with the label any longer but they wouldn't release him so he came up with the idea of working under another name. Maybe I got that wrong.

I'm not a Prince fan. His juvenile sex obsession was boring and the only album that I remember pretty much liking is "Dirty Mind."

I liked about half the cuts from 1999, so my liking of Prince didn't go much beyond the views expressed by Randy. I never owned the album Controversy that was released between Dirty Mind and 1999. I heard it a few times and thought it wasn't nearly as good as Dirty Mind.

Also picked up the new Spoon, Eels, White Rabbits, Hot Chip and Beach House. A good start to the year musically.

Padraig, Is your 'Sweet Child O' Mine' single by Taken By Trees on cd or vinyl? The song does not appear on either of her albums and I have been unable to track down a cd copy. There is a used vinyl copy for sale on AmazonCom for the bargain price of US$69.99.

Last records bought but still to arrive :-

Go Find - Everbody Knows It's Gonna Happen Only Not Tonight
Seabear - While The Fire Dies
Seabear - We Built A Fire
Frida Hyvonen - Silence Is Wild

Hugh, it is on CD but it's a promo. I'd never even heard of Taken By Trees but the woman in Rough Trade took a shine to my daughter and put a few extra CDs for free into my bag for her, one of which was Sweet Child O' Mine. I'm beginning to realise from what you and a cousin of mine have said that I have a very rare thing indeed. And it cost nothing! I've sent you an email by the way...

Padraig, as mentioned by Lewisdhead, Taken By Trees is Victoria Bergsman who was an original member of The Concretes who formed in Stockholm, Sweden, in the mid 1990's. She recorded a couple of albums and some eps with the band before leaving for a solo career. She has since released two albums ( Open Field; East Of Eden ) on Rough Trade Records under the name Taken By Trees.

I am beginning to think that 'Sweet Child O' Mine' was perhaps only issued as a download and that vinyl and cd copies which exist are all promos so you may indeed have an extremely rare disc.

I have replied to your e-mail.

Andreas, Yes I am enjoying Time for Tyner very much.I've bought a dozen jazz albums in the last year that Bobby Hutcherson played on. I never cared for vibe players before but Bobby has been a revilation.

Devo - Freedom Of Choice (2009 Deluxe remastered Edition)
Ultravox - Vienna (Remastered Definitive Edition)
Thomas Dolby - The Golden Age Of Wireless (Remastered & Expanded including bonus DVD)

I never invested in cd versions of Freedom of Choice or Vienna, so now that they have been remastered I fiqured it's the perfect time to step up to the pump. I'm also exited about the remastered & expanded Wireless, which will be replacing my bare bones 80's cd.

Word of the day: bamboozle. For some reason the folks from the sub-continent of India as well as those that have left India for America and other shores love to use the world bamboozle as well as bamboozled and bamboozlement.

Great film, Le Trou! Prison flicks almost always work, and this is no exception. Based on his own experience, I think, and written by Jose Giovanni, who went on to write and direct some excellent tough French noirs during the 60s.

Stuart,

Jose Giovanni wrote two other masterfull French noirs that were turned into Serie Noire(French film noirs); Melville's "Le Deuxičme Souffle" and Claude Sautet's "Classe tous risque". Both star Lino Ventura and are available on Criterion Collection DVD's and are equal to "Le Trou".

You should read Jean-Pierre Melville: An American in Paris (Paperback) by Ginette Vincendeau. I got my copy from amazon.com and I can't fathom a better book on French film noirs, aka Serie Noire.

Another Giovanni film with Ventura is "Dernier domicile connu" where he is teamed rather deliciously with a young Marlene Jobert. I saw it late one night in a washed out print with a wonkily off-key soundtrack...a lot of TV transmitted French films seem to go this way. But I can watch Ventura in almost anything. I certainly should read the Melville book, Michael. But we're on the wrong thread for this, aren't we??
