Not necessarily in order...

1. Room for Skin
2. Haunted House
3. Dropping You
4. Who Said Love Was Dead
5. Lighting Fires (I know, most don't like this)

If we can include Jack Frost songs, replace the last one with "Cousin/Angel."

My favourite song of all he's recorded as a solo artist is his cover of "If I should fall behind".

If we're only talking about songs he's written, then:

1 From my lips
2 Haven't I been a fool
3 Comet Scar
4 Hot Water
5 Don't you cry for me no more

Thought this would be easy until I saw other people's list and realised how bloody great so many of his songs are. At this moment, I'd go for:

Lighting Fires
Riddle in the Rain
The Dark Side of Town
Black Mule
Signs of Life
Haunted House

And the worst....
The Pawnbroker
Putting the Wheels Back on

Giving one point for each vote, and ignoring rankings, so far the top favourites of Grant's solo work is looking like this:
Haunted House 8
Signs Of Life 4
Stones For You 4
Lighting Fires 4
Open Invitation 3
Comet Scar 3
Ice In Heaven 3
Easy Come, Easy Go 3
Riddle In The Rain 3
Hot Water 3
The Dark Side Of Town 3
Fingers 3

I think it would be more interesting to look at from which album most songs have been nominated. I don't have the time to do something like that, but maybe someone else might have more time on their hands. My guesstimate is that 'Horsebreaker Star' comes out on top. And before you say it - yes, I know it's a double album and has more songs than the others. But there's at least a single albums worth of top drawer material on HBS imho.

This sequence of songs on Watershed is world class - sometimes feels like the finest 20 mins. of music on planet earth (especially late at night):

Haven't I Been A Fool
Haunted House
Stones For You
Easy Come Easy Go
Black Mule

I mean if some new guy appeared and covered those songs, released them and only them to start with, you'd think he couldn't miss!

You're right, John, it's really good--although I'd probably still take almost any 20-minute stretch of GoBs albums 2-6 instead, or the first side of "Marquee Moon" (which just might be the LP side of the gods). I listened to "Watershed" last week and was impressed by how good that stretch of songs is. Too bad the album is marred by some serious "radio-friendly" clunkers on it like the opening track (name escapes me) and the awful, awful "Putting the Wheels Back On."

Kurt - glad you liked it! I have been saturating myself with that sequence in the last week or so - superb. I have read umpteen times how good Marquee Moon is but have never even heard it! Maybe it's time I dug out of someone's collection for starters.
Putting the Wheels Back on is bloody awful yep. As I posted on 22nd. Nov.

And the worst....

Great idea for a thread...GMs solo records are great in their own right...

1) All Her Songs
2) Cave In
3) In Your Bright Ray
4) Horsebreaker Star
5) Haven't I Been A Fool

My favorite cover version GM has done is his take on "The Ballad of Easy Rider". Masterful. I only just heard it recently, having been in possession of the inferior US version of Horsebreaker Star, that didn't contain it. When I lost it recently in a move, I purchased the far better UK version, with more songs....
