Elvis Costello - Town Cryer

I remember loving this song back when Imperial Bedroom came out in the early 80s. But I'd forgotten what a great song it was until I caught Elvis performing an acoustic version on a recent episode of his Spectacle talk show (warning: try and ignore the swooning Mary Louise Parker!):

Goin' Back - The Byrds or Dusty Springfield

Written by Goffin and King. I have a copy of this photo on the wall at home; they both look about 14 years old.

the Elvis clip is brilliant - thanks for that Mark.
Goin Back was the source of alot of friction in the Byrds Andrew, it was the straw that broke the Crosby's back I believe

Wow Michael. Thanks for that clip - great version of Every Day I Write the Book. Another Elvis gem I forgotten about. Agree this is better than the original album version.

I like most of that album Shane, but I find myself sniggering (a little) every time he goes "MUMMA SAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYS". I would say Axel Rose based his whole singing career on that line!

Song of the day/month/year(?) for me is still "Twice if you're Lucky". A PERFECT piece of guitar pop with a SEAMLESS middle 8. I wish I could write songs like that! How great is that song!

Shane,

I had come across that Tanglewood footage too. Incredible and you have to ask yourself why it has never been issued properly...

Maybe legal problems of rights? 3 tracks from it were on a Who compilation DVD, but they all disappeared from the reissue.

You can listen to the whole gig (streaming version) over on http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/. You have to register, but it is free...

cosmo, playing my "fables..." reissue just now. cant really tell if it sounds any different at moderate level, will give it the headphone test tonight. packaging is pretty neat, although i have an ordinary box shaped package, the blurb for this release mentioned a flip top box.

I havent had a chance to compare them yet but on first listen the vocals dont leap out like the Murmur remaster. Am loving the demos.

yep the demos are great. sounds more like a live rehearsal or soundcheck, dont seem to have been tampered with too much. peter bucks sleevenotes pretty much sum up the feelings i have always had for this album, i dont think any other band but rem could have made this album in 1984/85. mysterious doesnt even begin to describe it..

I'll pick up a copy tomorrow.

It took me a week or two to appreciate Fables back in 1985 as it didn't have some of the Chronic Town and Murmur elements that were so charming, but it shortly became one of my favorite releases for the year along with Fegmainia!, which was my first exposure to the music of Robyn Hitchcock.

The sad part is that that song is one of Robert's more 'restrained' performances. It bugs me even more on live versions of the song, where the playing is beautiful but he keeps on wailing over the top of it. You really just want to tell him to shut up once in a while. (But then if you did that back in the day you'd probably get beat up by Peter Grant, so not worth it.)

Thanks for the links. You can also get a DVD version of the gig with the upgraded audio off www.longliverock.org (its a free site for Who torrents.) And I believe it was legal issues with Wolfgang's Vault that led to those clips getting left off the DVD.

And that footage definitely deserves a full official release. One other highlight of the set is that eight minutes into My Generation they whip out a jam on Cinnamon Girl! (While I'm rambling about this period of live Who, the Live At Kilburn DVD or blu-ray is essential for the 1969 London Colosseum footage on there. Its an amazing gig.)

Stone Temple Pilots - Cinnamon. It's an amazing power pop song. I heard it in Red Eye records and was astonished to find out who it was. I can't quite believe I like an STP song!

Great 10000 Maniancs song Cosmo. Too bad Natalie left the band after the Our Time In Eden (nice return to form album) tour and Unplugged appearance.

Michael, I only just got the Fredonia recordings, have always loved In My Tribe which is a very strong album, not sure about the dodgy reggae version of Dolce Et Decorum Est (cant remember what they call it on the album but that's the name of the poem) but My Mother the War is great. There's a brilliant early live clip of them on youtube with Natalie doing her crazy ragdoll dance, I saw them in a shithole venue in Portsmouth just before In My Tribe and she was mesmerising (and gorgeous)
