I have to give a shout out to Stiff! Records, who featured the immortal advertising slogan, "If it ain't Stiff, it ain't worth a f___."....

There's an excellent box set available of the Sire stuff, called "Just Say Sire"....

You guys have nailed most of the best. In addition, I'd add a few from the States: Merge, Kill Rock Stars, Sub Pop, and Jetset.

Jeff, I knew it would be you! I forgot about em all!!!!!!!!
Crepuscule WAS amazing, same reason I am fond of el!
LTM, do you remember them in the early days? '84 I think my first purchase was, a compilation called heures Sans Soleil.
I actually love 4AD, but felt it was a tad overrated in areas, This Mortal Coil, Pixies et al, obviously stand out and hatrs off to Ivo for his vision, but certain acts like Wolfgang Press and Deadcan dance didn't float my boat. I liked the way you could have the rough AND the smooth on 4AD.
Cherry Red, well, Pillows and Prayers, sume it up, and its off shoots.
Nice one anyhow.

Good call, Hardin. Lots of great bands were on SST for awhile there--add the Minutemen, fIREHOSE, Black Flag, Dinosaur Jr., and many others to your list. However, they were notorious for screwing over their artists regarding money, right?

Not sure, Kurt...wouldn't be surprised - there's a lot of that going around. And yeah, those are some awe-inspiring bands SST had there - the Minutemen, in particular, are subject to an almost obscene level of reverence aren't they? Not that it isn't deserved...

Vaguely related: a journalist friend of mine did an article a while back on some of the great old N.O. soul men (Earl King, Huey Smith, Ernie K-Doe, etc.) and found that virtually all of them had been ripped and had received basically bupkes for their hits - it was the rule and not the exception...criminal and tragic..
