I have picked up the following at the local Oxfam shop for £1.00 each:- "Beyond the Southern Cross" (A double LP compilation of Australia/New Zealand Independent recordings)on INK Records from 1984.There are 2 cuts from Triffids: "My baby thinks she's a train" and "MGM". I haven't heard of any of the other bands. One band is called Sunday Painters which I thought was a good name ! I also picked up "In the Pines" on HOT records for £1.00. | ||

No, I got their CD Australian Melodrama as an intro because I hadn't heard much of their stuff. They came to me by word of mouth. I now have BSD, Calenture and In the Pines as well but on vinyl. In the photos on Australian melodrama they are obviously aware of that "Postcard look". The Clean are a New Zealand band who started out in the early 1980's Check out the Flying Nun website for further information ( www.flyingnun.co.nz ) I am familiar with The Triffids but have no knowledge of any of the other bands. | ||

Off the top of my head, Samurai Trash shortlived dance-pop-electronic group from Sydney one of the first signings to Virgin Australia not very successful commercially Whirlyworld exceptionally highly regarded electronic group from late 70s Melbourne Ollie Olsen who later went on to be main member of Orchestra of Skin and Bone, No, now an electro-trance guy, very well known and liked, their full recorded legacy available on recent (this decade) CD retrospective, name is spelt Whirlywirld. Lots of interesting people passed through the group. Tactics - amazing Canberra band whose albums are always impressive they probably had four or five, some issued on Red Flame in UK, Dave Studdert a remarkable songwriter, wordy, was very into Love (the band) not sure if that comes out in the music but those first two albums esp. Glebe really marvellous I think I'll go and put it on now Other Voices Brisbane group at least one member went on to be in Plug Uglies. Upside Down House Band with Laughing Clowns connections one very good EP and a single I saw them support The Go-Betweens in 1983 at Stranded, Pitt St Sydney Bring Philip were on the same bill I think! Synthesizer-guitar pop group who moved to Berlin one EP and a single. Sunday painters Newcastle rock group with a drum machine a lot of fun three or four good albums Madroom Most of this band became Box the Jesuit an art-rock band quite theatrical very enjoyable. From Sydney. I am surprised there's not a proper internet resource for these sorry some of the above are a bit sketchy. | ||

Sandy Evans is principally a sax player, Women and Children First (with Tony Buck of The Necks), The Catholics, Clarion Fracture Zone, Australysis, too many bands to list. Michael Sheridan was in NO with Ollie Olsen, Peril with Tony Buck, The Freeboppers amongst others.... |
