julian is another one of these scott walker types, ex heartthrob turned "difficult" artist. the other obvious one is of course david sylvian.
he must be one of the few artists who once graced the cover of "smash hits" and "record mirror", and who this month is the cover feature of "wire" magazine- for non brits the first two mags were for teenagers and the "wire" covers what could lazily be called "extreme" music - eg jazz, electronic, improv, world music , psyc rock etc.
i was a massive teardrops fan in my youth, and liked the first few solo albums very much, i think these vinyl albums are in the loft somewhere. my wife is a massive JC fan, i'm off to raid her CD box to search for her copy of "fried"

Cosmo - no, I don't have that one.

My knowledge of and enthusiasm for solo Cope only goes so far. Honestly, my interest declined after Fried. I remember buying Saint Julian and being very disappointed by it. Ditto My Nation Underground.

But World Shut Your Mouth and Fried are both excellent, in my view. And even better is the Teardrop Explodes' output. I think Cope was in absolutely brilliant form '79 - '84.

I mentioned in another thread that I recently read Cope's autobiography "Head On," which is highly readable and very entertaining. I'd love to get my hands on "Repossessed," which continues the saga, picking up where Cope's solo career begins.

All great songs people...so many to choose from!
My ipod came up with "When I dream" which hooked me all those years ago but you really can't go past "Sunspots" or any of the other songs on that ep - especially "The land of Fear" which he redid later on 20 Mothers.

geoff - I always liked Use Me from the first time I heard it on the b-side of 12" of Treason, probably because it's just JC and an acoustic guitar and that's a rare and precious thing.
Out of my Mind on Dope and Speed is crazy man! I just purchased Skellington on CD as I only had a cassette recording of it and havent heard it in years

i notice that kilimanjaro is getting the deluxe 30 year anniversary treatment with a 3 CD box set.

The Teardrop Explodes
Kilimanjaro
Deluxe 3-Disc Set
Mercury/Universal- July 2010

Originally released in 1980, Kilimanjaro was the debut album by The Teardrop Explodes. The group was at the forefront of the explosion of groups coming out of Liverpool at the end of the 70s, along with former Zoo label-mates Echo & The Bunnymen, Wah Heat and Big In Japan, among others. This 3-disc set includes the original album plus a second disc rounding up the relevant non album singles and b-sides. These include the group’s two initial Zoo singles, fronted by Sleeping Gas and Bouncing Babies and the post-album Reward which gave the group it’s sole Top 10 hit.

Disc Three features the Teardrops’ Peel sessions and often radically different, in-progress versions of songs, notably the first arrangement of Reward before the signature trumpets were added for the eventual single recording. The set comes with a series of newly written notes from core members Julian Cope, David Balfe and Gary Dwyer.

I can't wait for the Deluxe 3-disc set of Kilimanjaro.

May I suggest a new topic? Top 10 Neo-psychedelic/Paisley Underground albums? To qualify the album needs to have beeen originally released no earlier then 1979. I don't think we have every done this topic, and it seems timely given the deluxe issue of Kilimanjaro.

Colours Fly Away.
I have been listening to tapes of things that I haven't converted to c.d. yet after a mate was raving about "Love is a wonderful colour" by the Icicle works. So I dug that out....but the Teardrops do it in spades!
Colours Fly Away - all a budding psychedelic wanna be could ask for in 1981!
...OOOOh! But Camera Camera just came on too! Pretty damn good. Messes with your mind!
