Have any of you guys heard of Jim Noir? I picked up his album Tower of Love and its fantastic. Like a folky Badly Drawn Boy, crossed with the Beach Boys, and somehow he makes it sound like it was recorded in the late 60s which is no easy trick to pull off!! Another newie for me are The Mountain Goats, their album The Sunset Tree came out last year. The lyrics are done in a storytelling style, some pretty heavy stuff about child abuse in there. The arrangements are great, sort of countryish/folkish but again quite contemporary. Midlake are another band who sound like they are from another decade, this time the 70s on their 2nd album The Trials of Van Occupanther . Sounding like a contemporary take on The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac (bear with me  ) they also have twinges of Sparklehorse, Mercury Rev and Grandaddy. I like to think fellow Go-Bs fans would find something of interest here, you maybe have already? | ||

Just back from a Richard Thompson gig in Northern Kentucky. A fantastic show in a venue no bigger than a church hall, no more than 300 people there. Could have played '1952 Vincent Black Lightning' all night long and we'd all still be there. His guitar playing was just amazing to listen to and watch. If anyone here gets the chance to see him play an acoustic show do go, you won't regret it. | ||

Kevin I've heard of Jim Noir, in fact I've sen him/them about 5 times so far. Perfect little poppy moments. The album is all the tracks from the first three or four eps produced. I'll have a look at the others you've suggested, but finances..... Cheers Jon | ||

Hi ya Kev, I am gonna pick up the Jim album sounds grand. I been mpostly listening to Belarus, The Pinks, The unseen guest, Tons of Turin Brakes, Harvest by Neil Young, Paul Weller As is now, Boards of Canada, Caroline Trettine's 'Ten Light years', Blue Aeoplanes Swagger...and Horsebreaker Star, which has always been a fave Summer CD of mine. | ||

Over the weekend listened ot BYBO, Arctic Monkeys and several Ipod compilations which are great in the car,also Ian and Sylvia-Great Speckled Bird. | ||

i have the midlake album. the first listening was not very satisfying. but it seems that it is a grower. and roscoe and young bride are two hits. both songs and the singers voice (reminding me of rufus wainwright. a little bit.) are always on my mind. iam constantly find myself humming that two songs. | ||

hah, forgot the half. i like the new neil young lp. maybe his best work since ragged glory. and i can recommend jolie holland's 'springtime can kill you'. sounds like an update to old blues- and country music. perfect singer/songwriter music. and justine electra with her 'soft rock' titled album has the power to make me feel good. justin electra is a australian girl living in my hometown berlin. it is music orientated on traditional songwriting and old blues albums. the whole is ornamented with some electronics. and after listening to fancy robots or killalady (this piece is really a killa!) you fell in love with the songs and the sounds. |
