"Elevator To The Gallows", Louis Malle's first film released this weeek in the US on Criterion. What a great movie and soundtrack. The bonus DVD has some real nice features on Miles Davis and interviews with film star Jeanne Moreau, and Rene Urtreger. Rene was the pianist and recorded the interview in 2005 as the last living member of the quintet that performed on the soundtrack. The sound that Miles and the band made was the springboard to Miles subsequent great albums such as Milestones and Kind of Blue and changed jazz forever. |

Well, of course I've been watching the Sopranos...not sure about this season - decent, but kind of light on real action so far... And, I've gotten slightly hooked on the new HBO series following it, "Big Love", about polygamists in Utah...not sure if it's going to be one of the all time greats yet, though... Rental wise, I finally saw "Brokeback Mountain" and have to admit, it was really great. And "Chronicles of Narnia" wasn't bad at all, either. "Aeon Flux" really sucked, but it wasn't exactly a burden watching Charlize Theron in her little futuristic get up... And, I purchased the deluxe edition of "Long Good Friday" which completely rocks...I'm a sucker for a gangster movie, and Bob Hoskins is awesome in it. |

Six Feet Under--fifth and final season. I better not say anything about it lest I spoil it for others. On Jeff's recommendation, I watched the compilation of Devo videos recently--great, great stuff. Definitely a band that the video medium has been friendly to. But the dropoff in the quality of their songs and videos after about '81 is alarming. |

Michael, 'Ascenseur pour l'échafaud' was certainly not the late great Louis Malle's first film. I think it was the documentary 'La Fontaine de Vaucluse', with his first non-documantary film being 'Les Amants'. I always loved 'Atlantic City' being that strange mixture of a very American story through the eyes of a very French director. |

"Elevator To The Gallows", which I always thought was translated as "Lift to the Scaffold" (maybe the former is the American English, the latter British English?) spawned the best soundtrack album ever. It's the only one I listen to regularly, along with Ennio Morricone's music from his Spaghetti Westerns. It'll be good to actually see the film, though, so thanks for the heads-up on that. I'm just about to wach Invaders from Mars (1953) and Destination Moon (1950) - reviewing them for SFX magazine. And at the weekend I watched Long Weekend, and excellent Australian film from the late 70s. Also enjoyed a Jefferson Airplane DVD - great to see them in some genuinely live footage from the 60s, not just the usual lip-synched White Rabbit the TV companies usually roll out. Hardin, Aeon Flux has been nicknamed "Aeon Sucks" though I haven't seen it yet... |
