I've realized, reading some of the threads about B-sides and such, that, although I thought I had a fairly exhaustive collection of Go-Betweens music, I'm a mere piker compared to a lot of you. So, my question is, does anybody out there have everything: all the CDs in their various iterations, all the vinyl, including singles? I guess you'd have to include downloaded tracks, too. Also, I have a cassette copy of "Metal and Shells". Should I hang on to it, though I have all the tracks on other discs? Does it have any intrinsic value, apart from the sentimental? |

In many years of searching for any and everything by the group, I've never seen "Metal and Shells" (though I'm sure I could find it for too much $$$ on eBay). Hang on to your copy; it can only get more valuable if it's in decent shape. |

I'm slightly ashamed to admit that yes, I've been a bit obsessive with collecting their stuff. My collection is in no way complete, and their are people here, I'm sure, who could put my collection to shame. As for their 80s stuff, I have all their singles except for the first two, and all their LPs (in vinyl format). I have some singles in both 7" and 12" format. I don't, however, have every single in every format. (For example, I have the Streets of Your Town promo box w/ the 7" and misc goodies, but not the regular 7" or 12"). I do have both the Postcard and Missing Link copies of the "I Need 2 Heads" single, as well as both UK and Aus copies of "Spring Rain." I always loved the photo on the Aus version of "Spring Rain." I *used* to have the Beggars Banquet CD reissue of Spring Hill Fair, but sold it when the double-disc reissue came out many years later. I wound up buying all the double-disc reissues, but I kept the original Rough Trade CD of Before Hollywood, simply because it has some really cool photos that didn't make it onto subsequent reissues, but also because, unlike everyone else, I prefer the sound quality of that one. I've seen a few copies of "Metals and Shells" in my day. I found my vinyl copy in Amoeba a long, long time ago. Hang on to that cassette, Hardin! It's probably not worth a whole lot, but it's still a cool thing to have. I don't really have any of the singles (or downloaded tracks) from the comeback era. As much as I've been thrilled to have them back, and as much as I love OA, I just haven't been driven to obsessively seek out all their recent singles, and haven't felt compelled to have everything on vinyl (though I bought OA on vinyl when I found out its sound quality was slightly better than that first CD pressing). |

I've all the LP and some singles in vinyls untill Tallulah. After that, I've collected all the cds, sometime twice with the expanded editions. In the rarities, 'Very quick in the eyes' and last year I've bought easily two copies of the accoustic demos of 16LL. |

Where in the heck do you get the acoustic demos of 16 LL? Are those boots? Hey Kev, you should give me your copy of "Metal", since it's up in your Ma's loft, sitting unplayed. I'll even pay for the shipping! |

Hardin, theres an old Scots saying that applies here, it goes "aye right" It appears to suggest positivity, however that would be a wrong interpretation |

Acoustic 16LL demos are a CD that was given away with a French Magazine, Les Inrockuptibles, in 1996. I used to have an awful lot of Go-Betweens vinyl - all the albums and all the singles - but I sold it all as part of a massive "I'm sick of all this stuff clogging up my life" move. Some slight regrets but now most of it's available on the CD reissues I can listen to it again. |

16LL demos are good. eil.com usually have it for £25 plus p+p. They also have Neu Holland for the same price. There isn't a great deal that I haven't got in one form or another. Thanks to the reissue doubles us relative newcomers don't need to hunt through 2nd hand shops for b-sides. I still haven't got Peel Sessions or the Caroline & I extras. |

Hello, Last year I've asked to the Inrocks if they had lost copies of their edition with the 16LL demos. And yes they had it! It costed me only 4,50 € (with the post, in Europe) for the magazine and the CD; so I bought two of them. I've just asked if they had some left copies. I'll say what as soon as I've the answer. www.lesinrocks.com |

Thank you much, TROU. Please let us know what you find. Acoustic demos of those songs sound delightful. Well Kev, some concepts and sayings are universal. Yes, we say "yeah right". (I bet there are equivalent Mandarin Chinese, Italian and French versions - I bet Cro-Magnon men had a grunt that meant the same thing). Can't blame a guy for asking. Thought maybe I'd catch you in a magnanimous mood. |

Interesting - As I was taking a gander at the go-betweens shop, I stumbled onto a page titled "other stuff." Oddly, it looks like they're selling copies of the Hammer the Hammer and Cattle and Cane 7"s. Obviously, I thought those were LONG out of print. So I'm wondering, are these limited repressings? Or did someone unearth a box of original copies somewhere that was mistakenly misplaced way back when? http://www.gobetweensstore.co.uk/otherstuff.html |

I'm surprised you've waited long enough to ask Jeff. I bet you've ordered them already. 16LL is well worth owning: Was There Anything I Could Do Wait Until June The Devil's Eye I'm Alright You Won't Find It Again Love Goes On Love Is A Sign Dive For Your Memory Streets Of Your Town The Clarke Sisters You've Never Lived So is Live On Snap. |

Jerry - I've owned the original pressings of both those two singles for years. In fact, I just played the Hammer the Hammer single the other day. It's just that those are the *last* thing I was expecting to see in the Go-Betweens' online shop. How long have they been there? And, if these are repressings, I wonder if we can expect to see any others in the future? I think repressings of Lee Remick and People Say would be cool, since you have to pay well over $100 (US) if you're lucky enough to come across them on Ebay (those are the only 2 singles I don't own). And what better format to own and enjoy those early singles? |

GBs collectorama? I've got Grant in a cupboard and he's not coming out 'til Robert's solo career is well and truly launched again. Only joking... The 16LL demos are very enjoyable. At some point before the Paris reunion Les InRocks had an advert for a forthcoming CD, which was supposed to feature a Robert and Grant cover of 'Sympathy for the Devil' and an acoustic version of 'Headfull of Steam' (if I remember correctly!). By the time it came out it only had Grant's cover of Springsteen's 'If I should fall behind' and Robert's wacky live version of 'Danger in the Past' (b side of 2541?). Maybe the cover of 'Sympathy' was just a joke? And does the live cassette that 'Danger in the Past' is supposed to come from really exist? It was titled something like 'The most beautiful man in the world live in Brisbane'? I still have the tape from when I interviewed Grant ('87) outside on a beautiful morning in May in Edinburgh. You can hear the birds singing. And the set list from Melbourne Uni '86. And there used to be some very nice people working for BB in London. Once after I returned my 73rd warped copy of 16LL to them, I got a whole bumper package of promotional goodies, including several white labels and photos. And finally those 2 singles: they have been available for a number of years at G-Bs gigs in the UK. Can't imagine that anyone would have repressed them, so looks like the theory of someone finding some lost boxes somewhere might be true. |

I used to have a boot of the Melbourne Uni gig, it was excellent. It went with my old hard-drive, though. Once again I failed to back up some old classic or other. |

Andrew, regarding your query:— "And does the live cassette that 'Danger in the Past' is supposed to come from really exist? It was titled something like 'The most beautiful man in the world live in Brisbane'?" The answer is yes, the cassette does exist, but it was never circulated beyond a small group of people in Brisbane at the time, so I don't expect you'll find it on ebay. There is also a video film of that show, but again only a relatively small number of people would have seen it. I was one of the people involved in the making of the film and, with RF's consent, it was screened here in Brisbane a few years ago. Perhaps 70 people attended the screening, which was held in an art context and was not widely publicised. The film is a great document of a a great show, so hopefully at some point it becomes more widely available. |

There's a Japanese version of "Metal & Shells" with a different track listing. I have most of the GBs' singles, promos, etc. One thing I don't have that I wish I had was the 1-track promo CD single of "Was There Anything I Could Do?" |

"And does the live cassette that 'Danger in the Past' is supposed to come from really exist? It was titled something like 'The most beautiful man in the world live in Brisbane'?" It sure does. I recall a small batch popping up in Brisbane record shops at the time. I think I have more Go-Betweens releases than what I'm willing to admit. Excuse me while I put in my order for a copy of Friends Of Rachel Worth on vinyl... |

tbowed, It sounds like you might take the prize (not that there is one), but it's sounding like you have just about everything ever produced with their name on it...what about "Ashes on the Lawn", the fabled "arena rock"-style song, alluded to in the Nichols' book? Do you have that? Is it even available in any format, even a download? |

Sympathy For The Devil came out on the Beggars Banquet (record co) anniversary cd that included all tracks from the Stones album (BB) remade by various BB artists. I remember Robert & Grant talking (enthusiastically) in interviews about the track - and if I recall right - they said that it would be under the Go-Betweens name. But in the end there were "the Global Twins". A wise move, I think: the track is not very impressive, and that would have spoiled the whole comeback thing. |

The most recent item that required a long search for me was the "Mrs. Morgan" Australian CD promo single (with the mailbox artwork). Glad to finally have it after such a hunt! |
