On the Beach is my personal favorite, followed by Zuma. On the Beach just has this incredible, intimate, and sometimes kind of casual feel, like they're just playing in your livingroom. I haven't listend to Neil in a while, I should pull some of those records out. I'm not a Neil Young completist at all. He's not someone I listen to on a regular basis, but there are times when he fits a certain mood perfectly. | ||

i've been listening to living with war on his website, not sure what i think of it yet. as with most neil young albums in recent years it has moments beauty well hidden beneath an earnest but naff exterior. top 5 would be on the beach after the gold rush tonight’s the night harvest arc/weld | ||

I think you hit all MY faves, Jerry, though I'd throw "Zuma" (indispensable for "Barstool Blues", "Danger Bird" and "Cortez", among others), "Rust Never Sleeps" and "Freedom" (for "Rockin' in the Free World" - given today's world, just as meaningful now).... As for his new one coming out, "Living With War", I'm buying it on general principles - the music is almost beside the point, though it's gotten some favorable notices already. | ||

Alot of you online at the moment, couldn't decide on which live LP and forgot Zuma. Heard some of the new lP on his website.I agree with you abigail apart from "Are you Passionate" have all his recent and most older stuff.But not got his first solo LP but sounds like I've missed a treat according to andreas ( on another thread). | ||

I'm with Hardin all the way. "Zuma" has always been my favorite Neil LP; it was ranked high on my "favorite albums of all time" list on an older thread. Off the top of my head, here's a top ten (he's made so many that five is just not enough): Zuma After the Gold Rush Rust Never Sleeps On the Beach Freedom Tonight's the Night Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere Ragged Glory Comes A Time (much better than any of the "Harvest" records, IMHO) Time Fades Away | ||

jeez thats spooky jerry. your 1-4 would be the same as mine.I would have Zuma at 5, and slightly cheating I know but Decade at 6. The new album Living with War will probably divide Neil lovers, and quite possibly get him run out the country!! Ahh, "Comes A Time"...great one, Kurt. No list, at least of my favorites would be complete without it. What's the expression? A staggering work of heartbreaking genius..it really rocked my world when it came out... And, "Decade" - who cares if it's cheating? It's one of the all time great comps and stands on its own as a record, much in the same way "Kinks Kronikles" does... I think what's cool about Living with War is that it IS of its time, it is immediate and time-stamped (it even looks like it comes in a brown paper wrapper), and Neil doesn't give a rat's ass...someone had to do it...I may even buy 2, just to show my support! And, I've been listening to it on the website. It's not bad at all! | ||

The thing that intrigues me about the new album is that Neil is using the same rhythm section he had on the "Eldorado" EP and "Freedom" instead of Crazy Horse. Nothing against the legendary Horse, but they plod. These other guys play with some snap and energy, which Neil needs to avoid make his heavy guitar stuff sound like mud. What I've heard of "Living with War" sounds really energized--not a bad thing for Neil. | ||

Hardin, dont know if you are aware but LWW was released yesterday in the States - seemed to just come out of nowhere. It has already appeared on my trusty Napster so I am able to blastt it out in superb quality - thought the stuff on Neils website was a bit lo-fi | ||

Looking at Amazon its released on 8/5/06-lucky for me I'm off form work so can drop my daughter at nursery and head for the record shop. Decade is a truly great compilationanbd didn't put it in as well thought it was cheating. should have another thread of great compilations | ||

Another fun thread would be Neil's worst albums, because the man has made a lot of stinkers. I could easily come up with 10 of those too: Everybody's Rockin' Are You Passionate? Landing on Water Old Ways This Note's for You Life Silver and Gold Greendale (well meaning, but so tuneless...) Trans (though I don't hate this as much as most people) Mirror Ball (though it has a few great songs) Ones that most people hate that I kinda like: "Re-ac-tor," "Hawks and Doves," "Broken Arrow," and the "Year of the Horse" live "soundtrack." | ||

I guess that lends it even more of that "hot off the presses/ torn from today's headlines" quality...Guess Hardin's going by Tower at lunch today (I was trying to stay out of there, too). Listening to it online, it really does sound energized, like the War issue has stuck a rocket up ole Neil's ass! | ||

Ahh...just saw your latest dispatch, Kev - glad I noticed, before I hauled ass to Tower...appreciate your intentions. Your list of the dogs seems pretty comprehensive, Kurt. Funny, though I'm typically ruthless about trading in weak performers, I find myself hanging on to many of those you mention by Neil. There's another category, too: the also rans, the "better luck next time" ones...For instance, "American Stars and Bars". Not really a dog, but not all the way there, either. Even if it does contain the immortal "Like A Hurricane". | ||

Yeah, I wasn't sure where to put "American Stars and Bars"--it's a mess, but any album with "Hurricane" can't be on the ten worst list. You're right--he has a bunch of also-rans too. This will probably be unpopular, but I put "Harvest" and "Harvest Moon" in that category...very spotty albums. | ||

"Re-ac-tor," has got T-Bone on it!. 'Got mashed potatoes' ain't got no t-bone'!!!!. Aside from "Comes a Time" and "Rust Never Sleeps" which are two of my favorites, the 1977-1981 studio albums are all hit and miss/half good half not so good. And then you get the 1982-1988 period which was even worse. Ragged Glory from 1990 was a huge comeback to greatness, and Freedom from 1989 was pretty decent as well. kurt stephan is absolutely right. a lot of neil young albums are crap. i bought them anyway. but i should start with the faves and maybe in a week or so (it's possibly my last post for a week because my father visits us, but maybe i will find time to read and post the one or other short things.)i will try to name the worst ones. you know my number one. it is neil young's first lp. then came without any ranking everybody knows this is nowhere, zuma, after the gold rush and comes a time. on the edge are surely tonight's the night, rust never sleeps and on the beach and harvest. and i like landing on water and life, too (especially landing on water with it's heavy touch). yeah, and great news (or not) a new neil lp will arrive soon. i'm curious about it. | ||
