that strand was getting a bit long. took my kids to see Dan le Sac v Scroobius Pip last night and they were really good, much bigger and better live. Loads of love and noise from the crowd singing along and dancing (although no danding from dad - too embarassing for the kids!) |

Last night in our village hall, a young Swedish singer Eskelina, just voice and guitar. But what a voice! She has been in France for 3 or 4 years and writes/sings in Swedish, French and English. Even singing in a language that you don’t know a word of she has an uncanny ability to convey the pure emotion behind the song. A couple of traditional Swedish folk songs were sung ‘a cappella’ and the audience was mesmerized. At the end we tried to buy her CD, but they had all gone ! |

The only band I've ever heard singing in Swedish are Abba - and it sounded very odd compared to hearing the same songs in English. |

I saw Wild Beasts in cologne yesterday! What a stunning performance in front of 150! After a minute my mouth was wide open and I couldn't believe my eyes and ears. Never heared such singing before!! Here's the playlist of the evening: Fun Powder Plot This Is Our Lot Kings Men Brave Bulging Please Sir Two Dancers Two Dancers II Still Got The taste Devils Crayon ------------ Hooting & Howling Empty Nest After this song the concert was over, the roadie began collecting stuff and the lights went on. A part of the crowd still partied on and after a few minutes the band returned not believing that people still party on... After playing Fun Powder Plot once again everybody left the place being happy after a concert of 75 minutes. Love to see them again soon! |

John Prine in Seattle. Hilarious, warm and transcendant. Marred only slightly by a scattered few very drunk folks who bellowed like they were at a football game and attempted some clap-alongs that were not even REMOTELY in rhythm with the song...which was pretty hilarious in its own right. |

Allen, I had the EXACT same experience at Prine's Chicago-area show. Great show, drunk people trying in vain to clap along. What is it about Prine that brings out bad clappers? |

Allen, Rob, I imagine Prine fans are pretty dedicated but are of an age where they see one concert a year. They drink up because they rarely get a chance to do so outside of watching a Bears game on TV, and then clap along because they imagine that's getting into the swing of things. We'll all be doing the same at Robert Forster shows in 10 years time. |

Sarah Blasko yesterday evening in Cologne at the Werkstatt, a small (for me new) venue with wonderful acoustics. We could stand just in front of the band and it was very relaxed atmosphere. Sarah playing in a five piece band all the songs from the record. She's a nice and beautiful young woman and the concert was beautiful. The little crowd (about 80 only) was amazed, Sarah loved playing. After the show she signed everyone (almost) everything. She sayed that two month ago she settled to London for almost a year for opening the european market for her music. Met Trou before the concert and he took some pictures. He has a new girlfriend now cu, Trou |

The Bats were superb in Sydney on Friday. Even better than when they played at the Hopetoun about 18 months ago. They really are the very definition of the Flying Nun/Dunedin sound. There is something very life-affirming about Robert Scott's melodies and lyrics. And Paul Kean is one of the great bass players. Now looking foward to a Wilco double-header this coming weekend - Saturday night at the State Theatre followed by an 'intimate' gig at he 500-capacity Marrickville Factory Theatre on the Sunday. |

Epic performance by Wilco at the Marrickville Factory Theatre in Sydney last night (a small venue with 500 capacity). Played for over two and half hours. A radically different set-list to the one the night before in the State Theatre, including lots of rarities and seldom performed tracks (Kicking Televion, Laminated Cat, Box Full of Letters). Encore included two Big Star covers - Thank You Friends and In The Street. What a show! |

Oh and Impossible Germany was even better than album. Guitar soaring. I realize i have said on earlier posts how much i preferred the "old" Wilco say Being There vintage, but seeing them live has made me revisit their more recent stuff. |

c gull. after initially dismissing the fall album as "just another fall album" i am really enjoying it and play it regularly, a note of caution about the gigs though. apparently mes walked out of a fall gig in glasgow last week after only a short time on stage. he's got previous for this, i remember an edinburgh gig where he did excatly the same thing good luck |

Kev - I think YFOC is their best in ages, it really holds together, I love the rockabilly sound and there are definite shades of earlier incarnations on the band in it. Cowboy George and Hot Cake stand out to me. Reviews have been very favourable and it was noticeable how full the two gigs were. London was ok I thought - seemed a bit too polished (not a word I associate with the fall). MES really on from though. Brighton was outstanding though. Really full on sound, MES again on top form looking (possibly) sober and his vocals really crisp. Go see them if you have a chance - I reckon normally after hitting this kind of peak they drop off suddenly before building up again possibly through personnel changes. |

Natalie Merchant in Brussels yesterday. Two guitarists, one cello and an incredible voice to present her last record in an intimate manner. With this line up all the songs took another dimension (nothing to do with the cd versions). It was sometimes beautiful to cry…and she even cried on the saddest song (Spring and fall). I thought this girl was too much serious but it’s false. Between the songs, she doesn’t stop to joke and play with the audience, dance like Helen in Seinfeld, take someone iphone (and phones..), pest on the battery of her macbook, in fact she’s very funny. And the voice… It was a really magic night, nearly my concert of the year! http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/5251/ dscf0789x.jpg http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/87/ds cf0707s.jpg |

c gull, after playing YFOC again today i reckon it could be their best in 10-15 years. the band really are the best MES has had since vintage fall of the 80's, basically a garage band but with some weird keyboard shapes thrown in. signing to domino is crucial too i reckon, apparently the first attempt at the album was rejected by them as inadequate, maybe the kick up the arse smith should have had on the last 7 or 8 albums. yes, you are right as well about the reviews. for long enough now it was almost accepted that a reviewer would award a 3/5 or 6/10 because, well, it was the fall after all. now there is a deluge of 4/5's and 8/10's (although a few 3's and 6's remain) and what seems to be a genuine awakening of interest in them again. |

I am jealous TROU ! At one point I seriously thought about a trip to Paris to see her on this brief tour, but it didn't work out. Much as I was a 10,000 Maniacs fan I like her solo stuff even more and when I saw her years ago in Glasgow she was wonderful. As as you describe she is genuinely "instinctive" on stage and does what feels right for the moment. Refreshing ! Do you have the new CD yet ? |

Pavement were wonderful, great sound (which apparently wasnt the case at Brixton) and very good atmosphere, Malkmus is axe hero. Vocal a bit flat and dry on opener Box Elder but this resolved by second song Elevate My Mind which sounded great and it went from strength to strength after that. Crowd full of love, I cried twice, pure joy and emotion. Saw Spiral Stairs and his band on Friday night doing a good set in a Crazy Horse style. They did Caught in the Rain - the Preston School of Industry song which clearly owes a debt to the GBs. Weather good on Saturday- sat on the beach watching various Indie football matches taking place - lots of checked clothes and interesting fringed footballers |

Saw John Prine on Thursday. He was playing his old high school here in the Chicago suburbs as a benefit for an arts organization in his hometown. He played Thursday and Saturday, and since we were doing a Friday show benefitting the same organization (related to the Prine tribute CD I mentioned elsewhere), they gave us all tickets. A review is here: http://www.suntimes.com/lifestyles/hoeks tra/2274730,john-prine-maywood-benefit-0 51510.article I'll just say the show was something else. It was being filmed for a documentary they're doing on Prine, so there were cameras everywhere. He played for - no kidding - four hours, and every song was prefaced by a funny or illuminating story. I saw him just a month or so ago, and he was terrific then, but he was in rare form on Thursday. It should be a hell of a documentary. |

Saw the New Pornographers yesterday. They were in very good mood. The songs of their last record (I like nearly half of it) sounded better on stage. The support band was Here We Go Magic. They’ve got 4-5 very strong songs and were cheered. As many, I’ve bought their cd. But it’s not the same, better live. A very nice evening. http://img20.imageshack.us/f/img20/3421/ dscf0900.jpg http://img297.imageshack.us/f/img297/152 2/dscf0935b.jpg http://img710.imageshack.us/f/img710/855 9/dscf1017i.jpg |

Trou, Here We Go Magic were a one man band at the time of the recording of the album ( Luke Temple wrote, arranged, performed and recorded all the songs with the exception of one ) so I am guessing that their live sound is somewhat different. Looking forward to seeing in which direction they head now that they are an actual band. Fangela is probably my favourite songs on the album. |

I saw Machine Translations with only 80(?) others in the plush, packed(...yes 80 and packed!) Vanguard. Great. Such a nice bloke, really easy to talk to at the end - no Steve Kilbey!! Great songs. Hugh, the band was just about the same as last time (2 years ago) with double drummers and he told us that 2 of them were from the Boat People! He's still working on the album and has no time set for release. Did a 2nd encore of "rusty" requests that they didn't rehearse...but still, who can argue when songs like Amnesia and Poor Circle finish a very nice Saturday night! Only bummers I guess were the parking(!) and the knowledge that the mate I went with knows Greg so well that he's going to be put on the door from now on for M.T., knowing full well that his girlfriend works with Russell Kilbey and gets put on the door for the Church too! (exit with envious gnashing of teeth!) |

my main beef with academy's in general, is yes they suit the disheveled tattooed ta fu*k moshit reveller variety, but bands such as teenage Fannies are, to me, better suited in places that have a traditional presence, rather than these sterile ex porn cinema shoe boxes, that have shite acoustics, been to 5 diff academy's now, I find them grossly depressing venues...a great examople is Robert's gig in '08, look at the pics (wherever they are!) of the Oxford gig in relation to the Lancaster? gig... |

i agree in general spence, just the glasgow venue is ok. the last time i saw the fannies was about 4 years ago at the liquid room in edinburgh. its one of those great low ceiling-ed venues(capacity approx 500) where anybody about 6'3 or 6'4 is in danger of being decapitated. it makes for great acoustics, they played all the hits cos they were promoting the greatest hits album. saw john cale, drive by truckers, white stripes, big youth, arthur lee and love and franz ferdinand there. as you can tell, given the capacity size i saw franz f and the white stripes when they were still good!! :-) |

Good gig -they are just a great band with so many great songs now but for me the bassist has all the best ones (Don't Look Back and Sparky for starters!) Like the album too and the one the bassist does is the best! By the way - anyone coming down to London for Forster in July?- Jazz Cafe is a decent venue -lots of good pubs around there - SpreadEagle for me if anyone fancies a pint beforehand. |

Off early tomorrow morning for a long drive to the Mediterranean coast. Two nights of the ‘Les Déferlantes’ festival with my teenage son. Friday night is mainly French acts although Suzanne Vega is also playing. Looking forward to Renan Luce and for some kitsch value (Mr Françoise Hardy himself) Jacques Dutronc. Saturday is my son’s current heroine Izia (daughter of Jacques Higelin), and headlined by Patti Smith and Iggy Pop/Stooges. Frankly with the heat that we are experiencing at the moment I feel it could be a test of endurance. The only other festival I have ever been to was in the late 70s at Loch Lomond; it pissed down and was held in a bear park. The bears were only removed the day before and there were enormous piles of bear poo everywhere. Ah, memories ! |

There were certainly a lot more bands that played that don't feature on the list from the site. I went with a friend for the whole weekend and remember the Friday night watching the Buzzcocks sound checking. And yet they didn’t play ‘til the Sunday according to the site… So safely back from the fierce heat of the Med and the 2 days of music. And the highlights were Suzanne Vega (whom we met and my son has a signed CD) and shaking Patti Smith’s hand as she ran along the front of the crowd. She was amazing, a real inspiring force and her voice was incredible! A real legend. Before Patti were the “BB Brunes”, part of the so called ‘bébé rockers” movement that French girlies come to scream at. Think of a French version of The Strokes (circa their first record) and you’ll be close. All the elements are present and correct (nice Fender Jaguars boys), but the moment Patti Smith flanked by Lenny Kaye (another legend!) strolls onto the stage and start playing you know that THIS is the real thing. Unfortunately the Stooges attracted the knuckleheads that had been boozing all day and the atmosphere soured for them. People were being dragged out of the crowd from the moment that they hit the stage and we didn’t stay at the front for the whole set. Frankly I could hardly breathe and worried for my safety and that of my son’s. Still he was happy to have been so close to Iggy for his faves ‘Search and Destroy’ and ‘I Wanna be Your Dog’… |

On my annual pilgrimage (which consists of taking the Ashland bus two miles south) to the Pitchfork Music Festival. Yesterday: Liars, Robyn, Broken Social Scene, Modest Mouse. Today I'm aiming for Panda Bear, Wolf Parade and LCD Soundsystem. Plus other stuff I've never heard of. Tomorrow closes with Pavement. Can't wait. |

Best performance I've seen in some time: LCD Soundsystem. "All My Friends," which was practically written for a 43-year-old guy spending the weekend at Pitchfork, was spectacular, like a lost New Order rave-up with better lyrics. James Murphy is a hell of performer - energetic, down-to-earth, yet the epitome of cool. Best interaction of the day: Some young guy who played with Jon Spencer watching Wolf Parade perform "I'll Believe in Anything": Him: "Oh my god, I love this song." Me: "Me, too." Him: "I can't believe I'm seeing them do this! Man, I wish I'd seen them back in the day." Me: "Uh, didn't this record come out in 2005?" Him: "Yeah. What's your point?" |

Agree with you on LCD Soundsystem Rob, "all my friends" was the live highlight of a trip to Electric Picnic festival a couple of years back, they were quite brilliant that night and it was easily the moment of the festival. The tune gets serious volume at the end of the night on the rare occasion we throw a party these days, it's like the national anthem, sure Mr Murphy would enjoy the irony! Black Keys playing Dublin while I'm in their home town of Akron, Ohio at a wedding! These chances are extremely slim. The one band I would love to see live from all the new albums I've listened to this year. And if that wasn't enough a long time favourite that I have never seen live, Yann Tierson, plays the same week. This will all be made good by catching the reformed Galaxie 500 in Virgil's Red Hot Chicken Shack, Akron, on the same night, I hope. |

I have to second what TROU said above about John Grant. I was completely blown away by his performance live, and his record is also excellent. I think he is doing a lot of additional dates this year with Midlake and Jason Lytle (from the late lamented Grandaddy), so that will be a show not to miss if it hits your town! |

In November you can see John Grant + The National, Spoon, Midlake, Teenage Fanclub, Get well soon, Tindersticks, Black Keyes etc. between two bathes and walk on the beach at a holiday center in North Germany. All these bands in two days..verty tempting... but also surely expensive week-end. http://www.rollingstone-weekender.de/ind ex.php |

Eddie and the Dreamers at the 100 Club, Oxford Street, (London) last night. Great night apart from a bollix beside me who yabbed loudly throughout until I advised him (albeit belatedly) that I hadn't paid in to listen to him. Played alot of early ones - Dying Day, Consolation Prize, Falling and laughing. About four songs from the imminent 'Losing Sleep' album - from which 'What is my role' sounded the pick. Some tracks uploaded on www.edwyncollins.com if anyone is interested. |

Bugger!!!!!!!!! I missed Greg Atkinson's 50th at the Sando last weekend. Did anyone see it? It apparently had reformations of Ups and Downs and Big Heavy Stuff. |

November will see me attending two gigs - increasingly rare for me these days! John Shuttleworth and The Fall - quite a contrast. October will see Emily Barker and the very influential jazz pianist Mose Allison. Padraig - hello from Bath. I'll email you soon. I've struggled badly to cope with work after my travels! Hope all's well in Oz. |

In Boston last week for business I caught an interesting two-fer by two groups I'm not that familiar with - Of Montreal and Janelle Monae. I've never been terribly interested in Of Montreal on record, and their show at Picthfork a few years back left me cold, but in the relatively modest confines of Boston's House of Blues, they were pretty good. But Janelle Monae (who I'd never even heard of) was a force of nature. I don't know if I'd enjoy her CD much, but live she is not to be missed. She was this weird mix of James Brown, Grace Jones and Sun Ra, and her music veers among hip-hop, soul, torch ballads and acid rock. She had an amazing stage presence - you couldn't take your eyes off her. A pleasant surprise - and just $25. These days, that's a bargain. |

Killing Joke in Brussels yesterday. I wanted to see them once. It was a perfect show, with a good very excited crowd and a band in fine condition. They played many songs from their first albums so it was a bit nostalgic sometimes. And as expected (and feared..) the sound was very loud, hope my ears aren't damaged... |

Saw Peter Hook & Friends at Tivoli Mon night. Celebration of Joy Division. They did all Unknown Pleasures and many other JD songs. Brilliant show. Hook sang and captured the spirit (and the sound) of most of the songs. Close to a sellout and Hook and band received raptourously. Well worth seeing this show if they havent done Sydney or Melbourne yet. |

Psychedelic Furs last night at the Cheese and Grain in Frome, Somerset (England!), followed by a 10-mile bicycle ride home in near freezing conditions. A great gig - they were on top form, performing Talk, Talk, Talk in its entirety followed by a faves second half. Shame about the lack of 'Alice's House'. |

This past Monday night at the Crofoot (in downtown Pontiac, Michigan), Gary Numan touring a celebration of the Pleasure Principle album (which he performed complete and in track order at the start of the show). Very decent concert with a kick bootay version of Down In The Park as the highlight. |

Saw Edwyn Collins last night in Brighton. Really good set - mixture of new album, solo stuff and OJ. BlueBoy and Dying Day were great but best moment was when his son William joined him on stage and sang on one of the new songs. He certainly has a better voice than Edwyn did at that age! The look of fatherly pride on Edwyn's face was worth the admission price alone. Also interesting Paul Cook on drums. |

Hope Edwyn plays Dublin at some stage next year, he did have a scheduled show cancelled after the last album's release, i don't know why? I have great memories of seeing him play the Baggot Inn in Dublin in 1993, Roddy Frame joined him on stage (introduced as being from popular uk rock band Iron Maiden)He wore a smart red cowboy shirt and wife Grace played support and a tune about being in love with that scottish man. Saw Spoon play a few weeks back and they were excellent, I read that the last 3 albums have charted 44, 21 and 4 in the US Billboard Charts, didn't realise they were so popular. They should get better PR people over here, they rarely get a press mention or airplay. Solid show, as highly accomplished as you'd expected for a band with as many years under their belt as they have. His voice is one of my favourites in rock'n'roll alongside Mark Lanegan and Jeff Tweedy. Also got tickets for forthcoming Dean Wareham plays Galaxie 500 in February. |
