excellent show last night in vicar st.the sound was perfect.the set like last year leaned heavily on the last 2 albums but there were plenty of older classics to keep eveyone happy.and a new song to boot and the promise of an new album.great songs great sound.perfect | ||

Beautiful show, the full-band version of Cattle & Cane had to be the high point for me. But never having seen them at all before, the whole show was pretty amazing. Fantastic, can't wait for the new single/album. | ||

What did Grant say after 'Cattle and Cane' - something about '15 years' ? I thought the show was way better than last years in the Ambassador - the band seemed alot tighter and more relaxed (rehearsed !?). Also, it highlighted to me that Vicar St is the best venue in Dublin - great sound.. | ||

When the London and Dublin dates were announced I wondered if the Dublin show would have the same format as the Barbican show. Well, having read reviews of the Barbican show it looks like London got by far the best deal. A lot more songs and the promised string section. While the Dublin show was brilliant I feel like a kid at Christmas having got a really good set of Lego, being really happy with it and then finding out that my kid brother got a Raleigh Chopper!! | ||

Grant said it was the first time they played Cattle and Cane all electric in 15 years. It was a great version really brought out the song to its full potential. Here comes the city the new track sounds great really looking forward to hearing it in all its glory when they release it in the future. Must say I really enjoyed the full version of the wrong road with Robert on keyboards was excellent. Overall a great gig. | ||

Have to say I was disappointed. Sound was not great esp vocals I couldnt hear GMcL properly at all. band seemed ill at ease to me, RF not usual flamboyant self. all seated setup not ideal. still fab to hear bye bye pride tho. work of art | ||

I was a little disappointed with Saturday's show. Naturally, there were a number of highlights; in particular the full band version of Cattle and Cane (despite the problems they had trying to finish the song). It was nice to hear When People Are Dead and they did a great version of Baby Stones. Other than these two the setlist was along predictable enough lines. Notably, there was a decent selection of stuff on sale at the merchandise stall. Robert didn't hang around afterwards either which was a pity. One thing that has become increasingly annoying in recent years is that a large number of Grant's songs have exactly the same intro - there are 2 categories; the acoustic arpeggio (originally featured on When Word Gets Around, also found on Broadway Bride, Ice in Heaven, One Plus One etc - even He lives my life can boast such an intro) and Right Here was done in such a fashion on Saturday night. The other is a kind of relentless strum that offers absolutely no clue to inform the listener which song they are about to play. In the Core of a Flame, Bye, Bye Pride and to a lesser extent The Clock - all with practiaclly the same intro and previous shows have seen Right Here and Was there anything I could do? get this treatment. I'm sure the string section made for some less same-y arrangements. The overall impression I got was that Saturday's show was little more than a final run-through before Sunday's extravaganza. Finally, as mentioned earlier Grant was practically inaudible for most of the show. I couldn't hear a word he said between songs and his singing was muffled. For a bloke who is notoriously snippy with his soundmen I'd have expected him to have this sorted by now. By the way, would it be safe to suggest that Robert is as handy on the ivories as he is on the guitar? | ||

From the postings, sounds like Barbican got a better deal. Would have loved some strings in Vicar St, but at least I could hear them, plus oboe where necessary, in my head, so... Maybe next time, guys?? Any possibility of a showing of the film in Ireland, or failing that, a DVD release??? | ||

I had the good fortune to bump into the band at the airport when I cam in from Edinburgh and they were arriving from London, Robert had been suffering from food poisoning and the recording in London had to be delayed so things weren't ideal. That's probably why the Force was not his "usual flamboyant self" and left soon after the show. | ||

Thought the Dublin gig was superb, it was never going to be anything other than a warm up for the Barbican show (even though the tickets were more expensive: not GB's fault obviously) - but even as a warm up, it was imho a far superior outing than their last one in Dublin promoting BYBO. "Anonymous contributor" above should stop moaning and whinging about the moaners and whingers - they add a bit of colour imho. If the mailboard consisted only of bland platitudes it would be pretty dull, would it not? |
