Too late and already paywalled (is that a verb?). I suffer from tinnitus, but in my case it's quite mild and seemingly linked to my emotional health; in my case it sounds like a 1980s keyboard combo playing tinny-sounding plinky-plinky keyboards about 30 metres away. I dread it becoming worse and persistent. I've used ear protection at gigs for as long as I can remember (one of my main local venues gives out free earplugs) and I'm very, very glad that I've done so. | ||

I have tinnitus too, in my left ear. I trace it back to an Ozzy Osbourne concert in February 1986, so I've had it for a very long time. I can hear it now because I'm thinking about it, but most of the time I don't notice it, thankfully. | ||

There is a group that travel the night clubs of Britain giving out advice about tinnitus and selling ear protectors. | ||

I whacked into the paywall also, even though I tried as soon as I saw Padraig’s post. I’ve had tinnitus for decades but like Padraig’s it’s not too bad. I am grateful that it isn’t worse but I never favored truly loud bands. The shows that were too loud were almost always (for me) second tier artists like Lucinda Williams and David Gray. Not even PJ Harvey was as loud as them. I had one edgy Sunday night club I loved in the early 90s that was so loud my tinnitus after getting home would drown out the police helicopters over my neighborhood when I lived in south Los Angeles during a high crime era. More power to the folks talking to kids about tinnitus in clubs but all of us are immortal when we’re young. | ||

Randy, if Lucinda Williams and David Gray were your high water marks for "loud" bands, I think you may be ok  I can still feel the pain in my ears from seeing My Bloody Valentine and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club live, wish I had the sense to wear ear protection back then. | ||

Peter, thanks for posting that, it's fabulous. Reminds me I should probably re-explore That Petrol Emotion. I'm a big fan of the Undertones and met the post-Feargal Sharkey lineup when I interviewed their drummer Billy Docherty a few years ago. The O'Neill brothers are great company. |
