...to the people of Japan. Though no one's pushing any panic buttons here on the west coast of America, info about precautions to take in case of a radiation cloud are beginning to be shared. |

Allen, this one's so big I haven't been able to write anything intelligible about it. This whole disaster has me thinking of this song all the time . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6fem7-uc xg (I couldn't find the proper original version but this patch-up isn't bad.) Our hubris is getting us. |

One would hope that all NPP reactors and their back-up systems are evaluated in a new light. I'm still pro-nuclear if done with the latest technology and reusable fuel rods (as the French do). Those that are near fault lines should be replaced by ones that are not. Those that need replacing due to age should be more closely monitored and upgraded before being replaced. |

I had been leaning towards favouring nuclear power for a while and the vast increase in my last electricity bill (even before any carbon tax has been introduced in Australia) pushed me over the edge. And I'm not a heavy user of electricity. I have no air-con for instance. I thought, surely there must be a cheaper way to produce power. But my pro-nuclear mindset has not lasted very long. What is happening in Japan has brought me right back to where I began on nuclear power a very long time ago. A man at work is married to a Japanese woman. Thankfully her family has not been affected this time. But last time, in Kobe, they were. |

I'll add to my view that those NPP's that are near the ocean and potential tsunami damage need to be phased out and replaced by ones that are beyond reach of a 40-50 footer. The closest to me is Fermi 2 (that is located on the western shore of Lake Erie in Monroe, MI), and it emits less radiation then the nearby coal fired electric power plant. There is no such thing as clean coal, and the quicker we start to phase those out and switch to massive solar panel farms, wind farms, and then the latest in nuclear plants (if solar and wind are not practical), then it's all to better as far as I'm concerned. We halted plans for four new coal fired plants in Michigan last year. We certainly don't need more coal fired plants emitting more mercury in the Great Lakes. |
