Just found out about this gig. I was at their last Sydney gig 18 years ago! I'll be there tomorrow night at the Oxford Factory.

Wow. Give us a full report Padraig. And if they have a CD to sell that's newer than "Stand By" buy it. In fact, buy me a copy!

That's a shame - I won't make it to Sydney for another month. Bah! Presently cycling in Thailand having taken three months off work. Padraig, fancy meeting up for a drink in Sydney at the end of June/beginning of July? Anybody who likes the Go-Betweens and the Chills can't be too bad (they're my two all time favourite bands).

The Chills were great. Pink Frost, House With A Hundred Rooms, I Love My Leather Jacket, Heavenly Pop Hit, Male Monster From The Id (which they said they were playing for the first time since that 1992 tour) etc.

There were more women than I'd expected there, plus kids who would only have been babies last time The Chills played in Sydney.

Oh, no new music available, though I did buy a CD and a 7" by support band Songs. They finished their set with a cover of Clouds (they also have a song called Clouds themselves!). I think you'd like songs Randy. www.songssongs.net

Thanks for the report Padraig. How did Martin look? Was it a big crowd? I'm amazed "Male Monster" went unplayed for so long. I've always thought of it as one of the anchor songs to "Soft Bomb."

I think I've heard of Songs before somewhere. I'll check them out.

He's put on a few pounds since I last saw them Randy (but not as many as I've put on in that time!). His voice is still very strong; he only missed one note that I noticed. His guitar work is also really good; there were a few dropped notes, but I'm no expert on such things. He was very much the elder statesman with his young charges (men on drums, bass and keyboards and a woman who played keys and acoustic guitar and did some backing vocals).

I'm pretty sure Male Monster From The Id was the only track they played from Soft Bomb, which is bizarre to me as I consider it their classic by a long shot. My favourite ever album in fact, as I've posted here before. They played two unrecorded songs he wrote in 1981, when he would have been 18 or 19. One should perhaps remain unrecorded, but the other was brilliant.

They played just over an hour in total.

Padraig, in Sydney for the next two weeks (staying in Manly Vale but travelling into the city a lot). If you're up for a drink/got any gig recommendations (like the GBs, Chills, Belle & Sebastian, Beatles, early REM, Regina Spektor, Emily Barker, Teardrop Explodes...) get in touch! Email sfwithers@yahoo.com and I'll give you the phone number where I'm staying.

I'm here with my bike, and yesterday got soaked as it rained all day. Just like it did when I first came to Sydney in 1988, when I lived here for a year. Just like being back home!

Talking about The Chills..

Do you know any good locations in Europe, where they could play? Festivals and/or Clubshows??

Are there any bookers in the clubs, who are fans of fine KiwiMusic?? ( Means: people who KNOW/LOVE the band!)
