Hopefully these end up on youtube. The Reggae at the BBC sounds most promising because of the archival footage. |

randy, one of the great things that the bbc do is called iplayer. this allows people to listen to radio shows and television programmes for 7 days after broadcast, either via the internet or on some subscription tv packages like btvision. as far as i know these are only available to residents of the uk and thats a crying shame, otherwise you would be able to watch these reggae docs. the bbc put out a lot of dross, but they also broadcast some great radio and tv, and iplayer is a fantastic method of watching or listening to stuff you might have missed, or been unaware of at the time. the commercial stations are largely unwatchable in my opinion, mostly reality tv, chat shows hosted by idiots, and cooking programmes. does the us have an equivalent of iplayer on any of its channels? |

Wow, Kevin, thanks for that. I don't remember ever seeing a 90 minute youtube. I learned quite a bit, actually. (I didn't know Soul II Soul were from the U.K. and I never really had much of an idea what lovers rock was--I definitely didn't know it was more commonly female-sung.) I still don't have much enthusiasm for the music of the two tone bands but I like how they came to be. It reminds me of the period when the ONLY new records I wanted to hear were reggae records. Aside from them I just buried myself deeper into progressively more esoteric 60s records because I hated the pre-punk 70s rock so much. Looking back, that was probably only a window of about 3 or 4 years--the absolute middle of the 70s--but it seemed like forever at the time. It took longer for punk to reach backwaters like central California, so my time frame might sound weird to someone from London or New York. I don't think I heard any proper punk until the tail end of 1977. I love the early footage and wish there was more of it. |
