His last years were not good ones, and I hope he's at peace now. I have a bunch of his records, and would recommend them to anyone - a rare combination of warm, funny, outraged and astute. RIP

You mean personally, not professionally, don't you Allen? I thought his last album was terrific.

Yeah, personally for sure - heavy-duty crack addiction, HIV-positive diagnosis, jail time for possession. But in amongst that he did do that excellent record.

I didn't know he had HIV. What a life he had, but still made all that great music.

Another good one here, "The Bottle"

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/ne wsdesk/2011/05/gil-scott-heron.html

And if you click on the the "in this magazine last year" link in the article it takes you to a very good, lengthy profile of Scott-Heron from last year.

Very sad. I saw him twice live in Edinburgh, the first time in the mid-80s. A superb band and an inspirational performance.

There is an emotional piece by Jamie Byng of Canongate publishers in Edinburgh here http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/may /29/gil-scott-heron-appreciation-jamie-b yng. In the accompanying video GSH seems so much older than his 62 years. All that substance abuse having taken it's toll.

And a photo here of his father in 1951 in his Celtic strip
