The velvet underground - Guess i'm falling in love (live at the gymnasium) maybe "I'm not a young man anymore" would be more suitable today, but this is a better song, especially when the guitar solo rips out of the first chorus. Ah, Lou, you did it all so young... |

Dominique A - Immortels Starting to think he’s a bit of a genius, this lad, with a seemingly inexhaustable vein of lyrical outpouring. Back in his kitchen or thereabouts anyway, playing everything himself, from his last 2-CD effort, this is an epic swoon just begging to be covered by Morrissey. |

So Stuart, you've moved into his new stuff? It's not impenetrable? Actually I pulled out his inspiration, "L'Imprudence," last night. From time to time my iPod pitches up a track from it on random play in the car and I wanted to sit down and hear the entire album again. I'm convinced that it's a brilliant piece of work but it is NOT background or sing-along music and at 66 minutes it demands a lot of the listener. I wonder if the title track was created a bit like the Bad Seeds' first album, in which the musicians concocted the backing by improvisation. It's very stark and very effective. I do wish I knew French because the text is so obviously a crucial element here. (I suppose it is crucial on all the records but this one seems especially so; I have a long history of enjoying music without caring about the lyrics because so many great 60s records had throwaway lyrics.) It really says something about the French that such a challenging record got so far commercially. Did you try any Francoiz Breut beyond her first album? If not, get her second and proceed forward. They're very very good. |

I think Dom A has such a natural bent towards melody that it's almost impossible for him to turn out something as wilfully difficult as L'imprudence. Even Tout sera comme avant which he apparently recorded under the influence of that disc is easy listening compared to the Bashung work. Remue is perhaps the least immediate thing I've heard by him so far, but even that is insidiously tuneful. As for Bashung's words, there's a site devoted to translating him into English run, it seems, by an American poetess called Laura Tattoo. As far as I can see, though, many of the songs, packed with wordplay, are equally impenetrable in English! (Bashung was a maniac for getting the words right, it seems, forcing up to 30 rewrites till "the lyrics feel good in my mouth".) Still no idea, then, what the hell La nuit je mens is all about...More Breut around Christmas, I think... |
