Sarah Polley - Courage

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrpaoC_-W k8&feature=related

For Atom Egoyan's film 'The Sweet Hereafter' the actress Sarah Polley sung several songs, including this cover of a Tragically Hip song.

A fine choice, Andrew, the Bashung song. Following your lead I just started up my day with it.

That's a wonderful song, Stuart. I like It's Immaterial quite a bit.

My song of the day: Torch & White - Stand Alone

The Apartments - Something to Live for

"The grass is bleached like skulls
We'll sleep on the rooftop tonight
Put the sheets in the fridge for a while
Katherine'll come walking in fresh from the bath
Katherine comes walking in smelling of soap and wine."

Sometimes there are great similarities between Walsh's lyric writing and that of Grant. That rare ability to give the listener a few beautifully defined images and leave you with a whole story in your head...

Changed my mind. Song of the day is, of course, The Apartments - To Live For. He sounds very like Mike Scott on this.

I have a friend who is a singer, more on the r&b/gospel end of the spectrum. He's been talking about putting together a small jazz band to sing with. Last Friday I was trying to sell him on PMW's songs but he couldn't get through Peter's singing. Normally, I will try to lure people into the Apartments via "Breakdown in Veracruz" or "Something to Live For." I think my friend would do a great job with "Veracruz" but no luck. I unshakeably believe that people should be covering PMW songs. I had a much easier time selling him on Paddy McAloon.

Grant McLennan - The Man Who Died in Rapture

Remembering the man.

PS Never trust what you find on the internet; those PMW lyrics for 'Something to Live For' (message above) are incorrect. It is Karen not Katherine...

Lorelia - fleet foxes.
Reminds me, with the instrumentation and the metre of singing, of "4th time around" off Blonde on blonde.
What do you guys reckon?
Still a great song anyway. Can't get it out of my head.

Gianni Morandi - Se perdo anche tu

The wife was singing this suspiciously familiar Italian "Sixties pop classic" around the house this morning... took me a few minutes to get it! Arrangement by Mr Morricone. Hope Neil got his royalties!

How funny Jeff. I considered sending it to you because it sounded like somebody doing a better version of the sort of stuff XTC liked to do. I thought I might have gotten it from Padraig.

It screams "hit."

Randy, funny you mention XTC, because Andy Partridge produced and played drums on that Newell album. There are some other good songs on it as well.

Kevin, somebody linked me to a great televised performance of Cave doing that song and it just blew me away. His schtick can get on my nerves but when he's at his best, Cave has no peers at all. Is that also from "Murder Ballads?"

Jeff, that's really funny. No wonder it made me think of XTC but it had none of XTC's Beatlesque quality (which is why I thought it was better than their stuff).

My song of the day for today:

Black Hole Sun--Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme Give these MOR singers a modern song and wow.

Phyllis Nelson - Move closer

Started singing this after too much wine at lunch today...maybe the first "black" record I ever bought, infiltrating all my white boy guitar music, and one of the few 12" singles I ever had... that echoey drum thing on the chorus sounded so good!

Michigan has had triple it's usual amount of May rainfall so far this month. The lake levels will probably be close to where they were back in 1986. I remember back then the boat docks on Lake St. Clair being half underwater and people having to climb UP ladders to get into their boats!
