Does anyone have any more info on, or even a recording of the janice Long BBC session featuring some of the GoBs as a backing band for the Servants, as mentioned here:

http://www.lostsheep.com/davidwestlake/d iscography.htm

Would be interesting to hear - we've heard the Servants with the Triffids as backing band, how do the GoBs compare!?

William, I'd love to hear that session, as I don't believe any of it is included on the Reserved anthology. I've scoured the web for it and haven't had any luck finding it.

This entry kind of blew my mind because "Disinterest" is an amazingly accurate appropriation of the Go Betweens' SMAL trending toward BH sound.

Regarding the Triffids as a backing band, I only know about them backing Phil Wilson. I didn't know they ever backed David Westlake.

I believe the Westlake Solo LP included members of the Triffids

That's right, Allan, it features the Triffid's rhythm section.

The triffids backed Bill Drummond on his solo album 'the man' as well.

One odd thing: if you check Julian Cope's Fried on Amazon.uk, it's also credited to the Go-Betweens! For no good reason, surely.

Hello there,

Bit of extra Servants/David Westlake info for those who are interested; I met David Westlake in Dec.'86 after answering a 'guitarist wanted' advert in Sounds! The GoB's Janice long session had already been booked in advance, so aware of the risk of becoming some sort of C86 3 guitar Fleetwood Mac,my services for that particular session were not required. It didn't matter, the GoB's were my favourite band, and I was happy just to know someone who was associated with them -I was 19 at the time. There was talk of me thumping away on piano, but that didn't quite happen. Probably for the best. I haven't heard the session in 20 years or more, but I remember it being a fast and loose Liberty Belle style makover of Westlake songs, with Forster picking mean Zal Yanovsky lead lines.

The Westlake mini album was recorded over Easter weekend '87. Alsy and Marty from the Triffids, David and myself. The Aussies were terrific comapany and funny as fuck with it. David and I toured the album that year supporting the Weather Prophets, I met the Gob's for the first time when we ended up playing with them at Wolverhampton poly, I'm sure that Robert, dressed in cape, walked into the audience when he performed 'the Clarke Sisters...Maybe not, it was all one helluva long time ago.

Last i heard, Cherry Red (who did a good job on the Servants 'Reserved' comp) were planning on re releasing 'Westlake' and the Serv's one proper album 'Disinterest.'Perhaps this will include the
Westlake/Janice long session as well. Anyway, enough of my addled witterings.

Very best

Luke Haines

Thanks so much for posting, Luke. Reliable information about the Servants is usually quite difficult to come by.

Wow, I hope Cherry Red does that reissue. I've seen one copy of the "Disinterest" CD so far, for impossible money. Thanks for the details Luke.

Yeah, I second the hope that Cherry Red comes through with the "Disinterest/Westlake" CD, and I hope the Janice Long session appears on it. Would be great to get the complete Servants oeuvre.

Mr Haines, I was at the Wolverhampton gig you mention, and RObert did walk out into the audience, I was at the front and he walked out right in front of me and put his hand on my shoulder albeit briefly. I was blood red with embarresment! Glad you remember the Wolves gig, as its not listed anywhere, they were fab, all the music that night was fab.

Also, you might be interested to know that the 2002 solo album from David Westlake 'Play Dusty For Me' is finally available digitally on July 5th... It will be on itunes, amazon and all the usual digital shops...
It really is very good and has been hard to get hold of since the first pressing sold out! More details here...

As one reviewer put it "The greatest go betweens song you've never heard"
