This entry kind of blew my mind because "Disinterest" is an amazingly accurate appropriation of the Go Betweens' SMAL trending toward BH sound. Regarding the Triffids as a backing band, I only know about them backing Phil Wilson. I didn't know they ever backed David Westlake. | ||

Hello there, Bit of extra Servants/David Westlake info for those who are interested; I met David Westlake in Dec.'86 after answering a 'guitarist wanted' advert in Sounds! The GoB's Janice long session had already been booked in advance, so aware of the risk of becoming some sort of C86 3 guitar Fleetwood Mac,my services for that particular session were not required. It didn't matter, the GoB's were my favourite band, and I was happy just to know someone who was associated with them -I was 19 at the time. There was talk of me thumping away on piano, but that didn't quite happen. Probably for the best. I haven't heard the session in 20 years or more, but I remember it being a fast and loose Liberty Belle style makover of Westlake songs, with Forster picking mean Zal Yanovsky lead lines. The Westlake mini album was recorded over Easter weekend '87. Alsy and Marty from the Triffids, David and myself. The Aussies were terrific comapany and funny as fuck with it. David and I toured the album that year supporting the Weather Prophets, I met the Gob's for the first time when we ended up playing with them at Wolverhampton poly, I'm sure that Robert, dressed in cape, walked into the audience when he performed 'the Clarke Sisters...Maybe not, it was all one helluva long time ago. Last i heard, Cherry Red (who did a good job on the Servants 'Reserved' comp) were planning on re releasing 'Westlake' and the Serv's one proper album 'Disinterest.'Perhaps this will include the Westlake/Janice long session as well. Mr Haines, I was at the Wolverhampton gig you mention, and RObert did walk out into the audience, I was at the front and he walked out right in front of me and put his hand on my shoulder albeit briefly. I was blood red with embarresment! Glad you remember the Wolves gig, as its not listed anywhere, they were fab, all the music that night was fab. | ||
