Every now and then, I realize I'm a fairly conservative web browser and miss stuff that's sitting in plain sight out here on the Internets. To wit: http://globalgroovers.blogspot.com/ An amazing treasure trove of classic world music, and they've got a ton of old African stuff I've sought out for years, to no avail. If there's a problem with the site it's that it's so vast, it's hard to sort through it all. One great find? King Sunny Ade - The Message. Made slightly before his famed western debut, "Juju Music," this one's wilder and weirder and, I think, more exciting. I can see why they didn't choose to foist it on western ears at the time. And I'm very glad to finally find it. |

An incredible site indeed...have picked up some prime Youssou N'Dour there as well. Someone over on the Xgau board alerted me to that one, and this one too: africangospelchurch.blogspot.com Though you might want to wait a few years until you've fully gotten through the first site...:-) |

sonic youth - rather ripped. i could be wrong, but i reckon i am this boards biggest supporter of the youth, but even still i reckon this album is up there with daydream nation and sister. time, and a bit detatchment from it, has been very kind to it. a fantastic album. |

There are few if any of their albums that I couldn't put on and have a great time with, and that includes much of their SYR stuff. Another one that continues to grow in stature with each play for me is the underrated NYC Ghosts & Flowers. |

I'll throw my hat in the SY ring, too. They are quite possibly my favorite band working, and I dearly love both Rather Ripped and NYC Ghosts & Flowers. I never figured out why people didn't cotton to the latter. The only record of theirs, Sister on forward, I don't play much is Murray Street, mainly because I'm not crazy about the production. |

Must dig out Rather Ripped. I remember liking it a lot at the time. Less 'experimental', more 'rocky' as I recall? They are one of the few times I've seen live more than once (three times in their case) who did not disappoint in any of the gigs. They were supported by some unknown band called Nirvana the first time I saw them... |

I really don't 'get' Sonic Youth. And I have listened to 'Rather Ripped' twice in a row recently. It just sounds so ordinary (OK so it's not one of their 'experimental' recordings) and the lyrics are appallingly throwaway. In fact, why bother having lyrics when the melodies follow the chord sequences so slavishly ? Is it dignified at their ages to be churning out this stuff ? But my 14 year old son thinks it is wonderful. Revive album of the moment : Jimi Hendrix - Rainbow Bridge (Japanese vinyl copy). Complete with woefully inaccurate (English) transcription of the lyrics. If record companies had all made vinyl of this quality, CDs would never have got anywhere ! |

andrew, agree on your comment about the vinyl. i played drive by truckers "the dirty south" on 180g the other day and it sounded wonderful, much better sounding than the cd which is not the worst sounding cd i have ever heard either. yesterday i got radioheads "king of limbs" newspaper edition, (2 x 10" 45 rpm clear vinyl, a cd of the album, a newspaper and some artwork) and was really looking forward to hearing the vinyl. what a disappointment, a few of the songs had more crackle than a bowl of rice krispies which totally ruins the listening experience. as a contrast, the vinyl copy i have of radioheads "in rainbows" sounds wonderful - just the luck of the draw i guess. if vinyl was guaranteed to be free of flaws i would buy it 9 times out of 10. (totally disagree about "rather ripped" of course !!) |

I loved Sonic Youth back in high school, but for me they have not aged well. Looking back, I think that Evol is their best record. It's funny, last week I listened to Sister for the first time in probably over a decade. Two decades ago, when I was 16, Sister was one of my very favorite albums. Hearing it today, I could see why I liked it *then*, but it does almost nothing for me now. What stood out was how lazy they seemed to be at actual songwriting. There's plenty of energy and flashy, explosive mayhem, but little in the way of actual tunes. And Andrew is right - most Sonic Youth lyrics are totally throwaway. |

i dont think sonic youth have ever claimed they were bob dylanesque in the lyric department. i dont think any fans or journalists have either. i played sister yesterday, and thinking about it, for me it is their benchmark and not daydream nation. rather ripped is the high water mark of late period sonic youth, although murray st runs it close. i'm glad they're still making music, although i wonder if they and teenage fanclub wished they had settled on different names back then! |

Kevin, before reading your entire post and just seeing the words "(2 X 10" 45 rpm clear vinyl" I groaned. Usually see-through records sound like crap. I don't think see-through plastic can ever be as pliable as good old solid color vinyl. I have "Rather Ripped." I remember it being a perfectly decent SY album, especially considering their age by that time. However I've never bonded that much with SY. I imagine their appeal--for the folks that like them a lot--is a bit like the Cannanes' appeal for me. You like the anti-pop aesthetic and you like the quirky personalities of the principals. Interestingly, my least favorite Cannanes records are the couple where they indulged in a bit of SY emulation. |

Kevin, you need black vinyl for the best sound. Anything other than black is nice to look at, but the sound is compromised with the dyeing process. I have SY's Dirty on double vinyl with one yellow disc and one orange. It's a nice package. Would have sounded better with black vinyl though. |

I gave up on buying any new Sonic Youth albums after "dirty" in the early 1990's. I started with "Sister" in 1987 as I recall, but didn't go backwards beyond "EVOL". They had a few decent songs per album, but looking back in hindsight they did lack a great songwriter. Or perhaps were they just lazy as Jeff mentioned above? I did break my long SY fast and bought "Rather Ripped", partially because of the comments here and reviews elsewhere. Decent, but not really memorable. I've given Daydream Nation a spin once every year or two the past ten years. That rate is certainly not as much as other 1988 albums, like the first albums from House Of Love, Lilac Time, and Mary Margret O'Hara. No to mention Lucinda Williams first great album, 16LL, A bell is a cup..., Sufer Rosa, Isn't Anything, If I Should Fall From Grace with God, House Tornado, Spirit of Eden, Idlewild, Pontiac, and Globe of Frogs. I think the Gerhardt Richter candle paiting on the cover of Daydream Nation still holds up. I would have no problem finding a spot for it in my top 25 favorite albums covers of all time. Did anyone pop for the Ciccone Youth Whitey Album? |

Because, among the big-time SY heads I know, there is no consensus on their best records, I'm curious how folks here rank their catalog. I'll throw out my top five, which is tough, because I really have a top 15. List time! 1. Daydream Nation 2. A Thousand Leaves 3. Sister 4. Rather Ripped 5. Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star NYC Ghosts & Flowers is a close contender for no. 5. |

rob, earlier on i was actually thinking of posting something similar to your comment about sy fans not having an overwhelming favourite album, despite having a large back catalogue - to me this is a sign of a great band. for every vote for daydream, i have read somebody else bigging up a thousand leaves, or rather ripped, or washing machine, or sister or,,,. the only other band i can think of with lots of albums who divide opinion as to their best album to this extent is drive by truckers. will post a top 5 later when i've had a think about it more, but off the top of my head it won't be too dissimilar to yours. |

It's true. I could've put "Dirty" up there, or "Goo" or whatever. There's scarcely a Sonic Youth record I wouldn't enjoy hearing anytime. I don't think your DBTs comparison is off target; they're a band that consistently makes good-to-great records in a particular vein. They're not going to confound you, but a particular release may strike your fancy more than another. Personally, I admire that kind of focused artistic vision. Reminds me of a particular band I think we're all fond of... |

1. sister 2. daydream nation 3. sonic nurse 4. rather ripped 5. evol the sonic youth message board is off the scale! i've never saw such a disparity of opinion over various threads - eg best album, best 5 albums, best 3 consecutive albums etc just when you think an album is a turkey in their opinion, a half dozen or so retaliate with "thats my favourite album!" the trend seems to be that the first couple arent great, then evol, sister, and ddn are classics - though no overwhelming favourite - each has their own supporters as to order of preference. then there is the camp that thinks the "difficult" albums like nyc ghosts..., washing machine, experimental jet... are the best, to hell with poppy rubbish like sister or evol! then there are those who think sonic nurse and murray street are late period classics. this band cover all bases and tastes for their fan base. i played rather ripped again tonight. i love it because its hooky and poppy (certainly by sy standards), and i can love it just as much as evol because its almost a polar opposite. they just do what the hell they want, they make what the hell record they want, and i cant wait for the next one. |

Kevin, that's a lovely synopsis of Sonic Youth! It's also nice to see you extoll something for being "hooky and poppy". (Not suggesting you'll soon become a "Crowdies" convert mind...) By the way, I was a late convert to Goo. I was very disappointed with it after Daydream Nation, but have come to really like it in recent times. I was living in Boston when it came out and bought it on cassette the day it was released. It felt like I'd wasted my money then. |

Also one of my favorite bands to binge on...I've got "Hold that Tiger" on at the moment, and "A Thousand Leaves" (which ranks very near the top for me, too) will probably be next. Also should be noted that unlike many others they give great value on their Deluxe Editions. I'm happy to have them all. |

Padraig, I used to be pretty ambivalent about Goo as well. I still think it's spotty, but songs like Dirty Boots and Disappearer are outstanding. It definitely marked a new phase in their career trajectory. Of the 90s SY albums, I'd probably say Washing Machine is one of the best. I remember at the time of its release thinking it was the best album since Daydream Nation. I never liked Dirty as it was far too commercial sounding, and Experimental Jetset had the wonderful "Bull in the Heather," but the rest of that album was so half-assed. But then for Washing Machine they really came up with a cohesive and melodically alluring set of songs. Of the early albums, I tend to think Bad Moon Rising gets overlooked. It's definitely one of their most difficult albums, but I think it's quite good. Confusion is Sex is cacophonous, primal, atonal fun, and not for the faint of heart.j |

they must be the only band of note, and with size of output who don't have a "best of". this is admirable but silly if you ask me. it would be a titanic record. its a testimpny to their greatness that the arguments would rage over what it would contain. they should get their fan club/messageboard to vote for its tracklist. (didn't some other band/artist have a comp released that was picked by the fan base? cant remember who it was.) |

Hey, Kev: SY actually does - or did - have a best-of, kind of. Called "Hit Are for Squares," it was curated by a bunch of bands/actors and sold at - believe it or not - Starbucks. Dunno if it's still available, but while it was out I had hopes of walking into a Starbucks and hearing Expressway to Yr Skull on the PA system. Never happened, of course. |

Of the few people who've rated their SY favorites here, two albums that appear in everyone's lists are Sister and Daydream Nation. From my experience, those two albums tend to be viewed as Sonic Youth's best. And Evol has appeared in most of the lists here, and again, from my experience, many people have viewed Evol-Sister-Daydream Nation as a kind of holy trilogy of 80s indie rock. |

Speaking of bands who don't have 'best of' compilations (and overlooking the fact that Sonic Youth actually have two such comps!), there are some musicians I would love to see issue best ofs. 1 PJ Harvey. I have not bought anything by her since Uh Huh Her and also don't have the two records she did with John Parish, so a comp including the best of what I don't have would be good. 2 Drive-by Truckers. You guys keep bigging them up, but I keep being put off by having seen them live in Austin, TX a decade ago and finding them quite dull! 3 Husker Du. Can't believe they don't have a best of. Maybe it's a problem between SST and Warners? 4 AC/DC. There was a great soundtrack to Iron Man 2 last year which featured 15 of their best, but I wish they would release a comprehensive double CD comp. 5 Metallica. Just for me and Jeff on this board I think. Anyone else you want to see best ofs by someone who doesn't already have one? |

Padraig, I expect Kev would offer the same advice: Buy the "Dirty South" by the DBTs. My favorite is "Brighter Than Creations Dark" but I think "The Dirty South" is tighter (and shorter, which you'll appreciate if you don't care for it). Knowing your tastes as I think I do, I'd be surprised if you didn't at least like it, and you might come to love it. I've seen a couple bummer DBTs shows myself, mainly because they like to jam a little much sometime, but the quality of their songwriting comes through loud and clear on the records. |

agreed rob with the dirty south, although sometimes i think decoration day is their strongest record - although its a toss of a coin job for me. padraig, you maybe saw them a bit too early in their career. i have saw them twice since 2006, and they are electrifying live. most fans seem to agree that even though the albums are terrific it is in a live setting that they excel. and so they bloody should do. they appear to play well over a hundred shows every year, and a two hour set is considered to be short changing the crowd! i'll send you some sample album tracks. |

Fun Boy Three - Waiting This album really screams of the year 1983 for me. I played it a lot that summer along with Chronic Town and the Killing Moon ep by EATB. |

i think Mike Cooley is the more melodic ( Grant MClennan if you like) side of the partnership. Carl Perkins Cadillac is a real great song. |

yep, for some reason this album had always passed me by, and it was the only gap in my cave/bad seeds collection. i probably passed up on it due to my misguided dismissal of the kylie minogue duet, now of course i recognise that song for its greatness!! kylies finest moment, alongside the sublime pop of cant get you out of my head!!! |

Murder Ballads, hmm. I have a number of gaps in my Nick Cave collection. I skipped from "Henry's Dream" to "Boatman's Call" because I felt he was starting to make the same record over and over by the time of "Henry's Dream." |

I agree with Randy about Nick Cave starting to make the same record over and over, although I consider Let Love In to be Cave's last worthwhile album, as it does contain a number of good songs, despite veering uncomfortably close to self-parody. For me, Murder Ballads was where he crossed that line and lost me for good. |

Crispy Ambulance - the Plateau Phase I used to not really like this album, but now, for some reason, I'm really digging it. It's a strange record, and charmingly flawed. Lots of interesting sounds, textures, and simple but effective melodies. |

jeff, funny you should mention let love in, its playing at the moment. its one of my favourites. murder ballads i dont think is meant to be taken too seriously, its all about the black humour. and like most bad seeds albums the playing is exemplary. i reckon that caves fan base is a bit like the sonic youth fan base in that nobody seems to be able to agree on what is his best album. there are probably about half a dozen or more albums which could claim to be the best, in fact i'd bet a lot of folk have murder ballads as their favourite. |

Kevin, there was a poll a while back on another message board I frequent in which people voted for their favorite Bad Seeds album, and I was utterly shocked to see Boatman's Call take the lead. I was also shocked to see Abattoir Blues nab second place, and Let Love In third. I was convinced that Tender Prey or Your Funeral would have taken a slot among the top 3, but no. This is a message board with lots of music obsessives with varied tastes, and I don't know how representative it was of the real world, but the people contributing to the thread seemed to be mostly serious fans. At any rate, I was quite surprised by this. |

isnt boatmans call reckoned to be the critics choice as the landmark cave album, you know the one that always gets 5 stars and always appears in best of the decade polls etc? i do like it for what it is, but i agree it isnt in the same league as your funeral..., which is one of his great albums. i do like abbatoir blues i must admit, not many artists make albums as good as this 20 plus years into their career. |

I like about 2/3 of Abbatoir Blues (you ARE including Lyre of Orpheus, right?) but like virtually every double set it could be pared down to a solid single disc. Tracks like "Spell" stand way up there for me but the album would not be in my top three. "Your Funeral" is the second Nick Cave record I ever bought. I played the hell out of it though I don't think I'd find it as riveting all the way through now. Sure do love the title track. Nick Cave is one of those persons whose songs should be regularly covered by other people. I know this is being done a bit but it needs to be done more frequently. His own schtick can distract from the greatness of the song. |

jeff , i remember buying that dalek i album the week it was released in a seaside resort in england called blackpool, summer 1980. it was my first holiday away from home with friends rather than parents. another album i bought on that trip was the affectionate punch by the associates. what an exciting time that was to be a fan of british independant music (when the term indie really applied), other purchases that week were blue boy by orange juice, and radio drill time by josef k. i am sure the debut album by comsat angels came out that same week. i recall bowie's ashes to ashes was no1 in the charts, and i remember a friend and i just putting that song and love will tear us apart on constant repeat on the jukebox of any pub we were in that week. funny how i can remember all this, but not what i did last week :-) |

I've never heard of Dalek I Love You! Detroit radio was a wasteland of Classic Rock back in the late 70's and early 80's. Same with New Musik until around 2005 when my fellow Robyn Hitchcock bud Brian Nupp introduced their music to me. |

Allen, After checking the Dave Nichols book, it is the last one with Lindy and Amanda. It might be the only concert boot available with Michael Armiger on bass as well. Do you have the soundboard recording of it? How is it? |

Michael, it is a soundboard recording - it's 160 kps mp3, which I'm told isn't the very best, though it sounds just fine to me. Link is below: http://goo.gl/OeEgE |

The last stand. I was there (!) with my feet hanging over the edge of the mezzanine. I remember being nearly killed by torrential rain in the middle of a blinding fog at 3 in the morning on the way home! And then later coming around a bend on the precipitous coast road to find a rock as big as a mini in the middle of the road! |

i was looking at nick caves wiki page and picked up on an interesting snippet. it talks of a band cave formed with mick harvey and phil calvert in 1973 and states "Their repertoire consisted of proto-punk cover versions of songs by Lou Reed, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Roxy Music and Alex Harvey, among others" i was just thinking last week how much some of the bad seeds work owed a debt to alex harvey, but i've never saw that comparison made anywhere else. for all i knew cave had never even heard alex harvey as strange as that might seem. but seems like he was listening to pretty much the same stuff as me and my friends were in the opposite corner of the globe! |

I'm a little behind the times not getting any of the Nick Cave remastered discs that have been released starting with 2009's From Her to Eternity (Bonus Dvd) (Coll), Your Funeral My Trial (Bonus Dvd) (Coll) and First Born Is Dead (Bonus Dvd) (Coll). And now we have the new batch. Which ones have the most improved sound over the original releases (that I have)? |

michael, not surprisingly the claim is that earlier releases in particular improve soundwise. i own every bad seeds album apart from nocturna, but so far have only sprung for 6 of the remastered cd's with dvds. they are from her to eternity, your funeral... my trial, tender prey (still to arrive in post),let love in, murder ballads and boatmans call, and i would say the improvements are noticeable but not jawdropping. the messageboards are of the opinion that the 5.1 dvd recordings of the albums are just stunning, but i dont have a set up to play them back on so cant comment. what i can play back on my laptop though are the 30 minute films that accompany each release, in which various bad seeds, other musicians, band associates, music journalists and fans reminisce about what the album means/meant to them. after hearing the various tales/opinions it made me want to listen to each album in a very positive light, especially boatmans call. |

Padraig, for a second there I actually couldn't remember if Grant was still alive or not - there was a tickle in my mind that said he'd died a few years ago. Happily, I was mistaken...and it could be I've reached a point of having too much music culture trivia rattling around in my head, if I'm getting that confused. In other news I'm sure about, Clarence Clemons is in very ill health following a stroke yesterday. Good wishes sent out to him... |
