Have spent some time with the Monochrome Set album now Randy and am happy to report that it's pretty good. A little loose in places but generally it's great to have them back. Bid had a stroke and clearly that's been a big influence, there are ruminations on death and treatment throughout the lyrics and even in the title (Platinum Coils are used to treat aneurysms). Lester Square's guitar still sounding 60s and clean and Bid's voice and delivery still a pleasure | ||

Basically anything by The Cure from the debut album (sort of) Boys Don't Cry, up to and including the Staring At The Sea comp (but I am omitting Head On The Door which I think came out just prior to the comp - never rated Head On The Door and the albums that came after it). I always liked early Cure, bought all the albums and singles, and saw them live as well. I don't know if I'm pining for a long lost youth or not, but these records just sound great to me just now. It seems every second album I put on these days is one of these early albums. After the comp I kind of lost interest in what they were coming up with, although you could always rely on them to release killer singles. | ||

Padraig, I have a couple of later releases, "It's So Hard to Tell Who's Going to Love You the Best" which was recorded in '67 and '68, and "In My Own Time" from 1971. I have not heard anything from before that. She took the singing voice of a homeless woman and made it beautiful. Stuart, I'm only on the third song of "Vers les lueurs" so far. "Contre un Arbre" is flat-out astonishing. And the next two are not letting me down either. Woodwinds and rock band! | ||

Kevin, no Disintegration? For me, it is their last good album, and it's actually quite good. Very moody and melodic. Nice sonic textures. But I draw a solid line after Disintegration. I really don't like anything they did after that. I like Head on the Door, too. It's their pop album. Also, their b-sides from '79-'85 are largely great. I especially love the tracks from the Walk EP. | ||

Thanks, Allen. Tonight I pulled out the Bats' "Guilty Office" for probably it's first full listen start to finish in a couple years. It's been loaded onto my iPod since I got it back in 2008 and songs from it bounce up now and then but that's not a proper way to listen to an album, of course. I remember basically liking this album and tonight's hearing reinforces that. I think it has a nice collection of traditional Bats-style songs. In other words, if you like basic Bats this record should satisfy. If you find the Bats boring or too much of the same thing, you will give this album the same criticism. Compared to "Free All the Monsters" it's a much less produced-sounding album and that might be off-putting to some. It strikes me as more of a folkie album than their better-known earlier records, though I'd say all the Bats' records are folkie records at their core. | ||

Scarlett's Well--Strange Letters The new Monochrome Set CD showed up at my door impossibly soon after my order, along with the first Scarlett's Well album as I inexplicably never got around to checking them out. I decided to listen to Scarlett's Well first. Bid writes most of the songs but lets one or another of three female singers handle the vocals on most of them. Orson Presence is part of the lineup and contributes writing. There's a "thank you" to Lester Square but he's not identified as a player. It's nice to see this evidence of their amicable relations after giving the Monochromes a rest after "Trinity Road." I must say, the music really matches the cover art--very ornate and pretty. | ||

Finally played Disintegration by The Cure. Not for me I'm afraid. Jeff describes it as moody, I prefer morose, and while that is probably just splitting hairs Jeff's comment was meant as a compliment which is fair enough. Smiths vocals and lyrics just appear banal and gloomy for the hell of it, and he sounds about as interested in the songs as I am. Some good songs obviously (Lovesong, Lullaby, I would have said Pictures Of You but not the overlong version here), but overall I find its not an album thats easy to enjoy. And I've always hated Fascination Street, no idea why but some songs we just never get on with and thats one of mine. To sum up, its obviously not a terrible album because too many Cure fans and critics deem it to be their pinnacle. I just prefer the early Cure, The Cure of spiky pop songs, and even the "moody, morose and gloomy" stuff that was on Faith because at least then Smith really was an angsty, just out of his teens guy at that point, nearly a full decade before Disintegration. | ||

Dominique A -- Vers les lueurs I've been popping this into the car stereo and even the box in my office at work but those conditions necessarily involve a lot of distraction and time limits. At the end of the evening last night, after the timers on the house lights had clicked them all off, I stretched out on the couch and donned the headphones (damn, the right cup lead is getting really dodgy on this otherwise magnificent set of Stax phones!), and gave the entire 57 minute album a proper all-at-once listen. This is a great album, quite bracing from someone who is 20 years from his first album. Unlike most of the other Dominique A albums I have this one has a very all-of-a-piece feel to it like it was planned and arranged carefully but then played and recorded over a very short set of sessions. I have to assume that his new live shows consist primarily of just playing this album in the same song order with pretty much the same instrumentation. I was struck by how many songs (such as "Rendez-nous la lumiere") that I could easily imagine Francoiz Breut doing. Of course, she did a lot of Dominique A in her early period. Stuart, I didn't personally have the early-listening experience of sensing a loss of steam in the middle unless maybe the relatively quiet "Loin du soleil" might be said to have that effect. And I never objected to the length of "Le convoi" because it has no filler. (Similarly, I've always found Bashung's 9 minute "Comme un lego" to be very effective and ditto Dylan's classic long songs like "Desolation Row" and "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands.") But 57 minutes is a demanding length of time for an album if you're the scattered semi-manic multi-tasking type that I am. The combination of guitar rock band and florid woodwinds--Rock and Ravel!--is original yet somehow quintessentially French and it really works. I'm very excited; this is a 2012 release and it's fresh but also timeless and brilliant. I don't get that luxury very often. I wish I understood French so I could get the lyrics but being an anglophone is no reason not to buy a copy of this album in a big hurry. The Scarlets Well stuff is patchy Randy but there are some gems on all of the albums and I definitely approve of the eccentric and as you say ornate vision that Bid has created for the band . I saw them play in London and had to admire him for surrounding himself with renaissance babes. The later Scarlets Well albums get closer to Monochrome Set in sound. Bid is definitely one of my heroes | ||

Great lake swimmers - New wild everywhere Felt I had to buy something at Ferrara's Last Surviving CD shop, though at 20 euros a pop I can't see it lasting much longer either. Since a yearly significant date is fast approaching, I thought I'd treat myself to 2 very rare(i.e. deleted) and hence expensive cds. The first one arrived today and is VERY good. I think even skulldisco would find it interesting although not one of the persons behind it: "Rushes" by The Fireman. Came out in 1998 and I only found out about it a couple of years ago. iTunes calls it electronica though it's more something you'd hear in a rave chill room (I'd imagine). Very unlike the Fireman's alter ego stuff! Nice! Now I'll just have to wait a bit longer for Wonderwall music to arrive - it was even more expensive. | ||

Allen, the song I mentioned above was a free download from Jeb Loy Nichols' website. I have one of his albums from the 90s and I remember liking it a lot at the time. It got some terrible reviews though, which I think was due to its hybrid sounds, as detailed by Hugh above. | ||

I can't go with you on the state of the last 20 years, but I'll endorse all of your adjectives regarding the music, and add "beautiful" and one I've never seen applied to these folks but which is coming up again and again for me: fun. And not in just the obvious places, like where the guitars in "Honey Power" almost turn into cartoons, but even in their gloomier and more darkly piledriving moments there's an amazing lightness to this stuff. |
