In light of the forthcoming Quiet Heart comp, and the inevitable frustration over some of the songs chosen for it, I thought it might be interesting to see which songs people here would select for a similar career-spanning retrospective of the band.

Here are the rules:
- must be 18-20 songs (has to fit onto a single CD)
- it must span their entire career
- must have equal number of Grant and Robert-sung songs
- you *don't* have to have an equal number of Grant vs. Robert songs from each album
- no more than 3 tracks per album
- you have to include some singles (can't be all album tracks)
- however, you can leave at most two albums off, since that's what the Go-Betweens have apparently done with Quiet Heart, and you don't have to have the same number of tracks from each album.

I kind of prefer chronological comps, so this is how mine would look:

1. The Sound of Rain
2. One Thing Can Hold Us
3. Hammer the Hammer
4. Cattle and Cane
5. On My Block
6. Man 'O Sand (single version)
7. Bachelor Kisses
8. Part Company
9. Unkind and Unwise
10. Head Full of Steam
11. The Ghost and the Black Hat
12. Bow Down
13. Bye Bye Pride
14. House Jack Kerouac Built
15. Love Goes On
16. Streets of Your Town
17. Rock and Roll Friend
18. Magic in Here
19. Finding You
20. Darlinghurst Nights

So, no doubt, some would consider this comp flawed because the Mk II era is underrepresented, and I've left off a few popular (albeit overplayed, imho) singles - Spring Rain, Right Here - as well as Karen and People Say. But this is what my own ideal career-spanning comp would look like if I only had a single CD to work with. And of course, if I put this together tomorrow, it would probably look somewhat different!

OK, I rushed that a bit earlier and didn't follow the rules properly - I need another Robert song. New list (and correction of Delray misspelling).

1 Karen
2 One Thing Can Hold Us
3 Cattle And Cane (single version)
4 Dusty In Here
5 Bachelor Kisses
6 Man O'Sand To Girl O'Sea
7 Spring Rain
8 In The Core Of The Flame
9 Right Here
10 Bye Bye Pride
11 Quiet Heart
12 Clouds
13 Streets Of Your Town
14 Rock And Roll Friend
15 The Clock
16 Too Much Of One Thing
17 Finding You
18 Darlinghurst Nights
19 The Mountains Near Delray
20 The City Of Lights vs. Future Pilot AKA

Both Robert and Grant sing on Too Much Of One Thing, and both speak on The City Of Lights, but I'm counting them in the Robert camp.

Padraig, I was incredibly close to including Mountains of Delray in place of Darlinghurst Nights. It's an incredible song.

I thought I'd find this quite difficult for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I don't rate anything pre-Before Hollywood very highly and secondly I thought I'd want more of Grant's songs.

I could probably be persuaded to change 3 or 4 of these. My top 20 without the rules would be slightly different but at least I got That Way in there.

Eight Pictures
Cattle and Cane
That Way
Dusty in Here
Man O'Sand (single)
Bachelor Kisses
Part Company
To Reach Me
Apology Accepted
Head Full of Steam
Bye Bye Pride
The Clarke Sisters
Clouds
Quiet Heart
Rock and Roll Friend
You Can't Say No Forever
The Clock
Boundary Rider
Finding You
Darlinghurst Nights

3. Cattle & Cane
4. This Girl, Black Girl
5. Bachelor Kisses
6. Part Company
7. Unkind & Unwise
8. The Ghost & The Black Hat
9. To Reach Me
10.Apology Accepted
11.When People are Dead

14.I'm Allright
15.Clouds
16.Magic in Here
17.Spirit
18.Make Her Day
19.Finding You
20.Boundary Rider

This selection might work well as a double LP - 5 songs per side.

People Say
Karen
Cattle and Cane
Dusty in Here
That Way
Bachelor Kisses
Draining the Pool for You
You’ve Never Lived
Spring Rain
Right Here
I Just Get Caught Out
Clarke Sisters
Streets of your Town
You Can’t say no Forever
Love Goes On!
Boundary Rider
Make Her Day
Poison in the Walls
Finding You
Too Much of One Thing

I think this fulfils the criteria! Had to get Karen, That Way, You've Never Lived, I just get caught out and the Clarke Sisters in there, which slightly dictates things. No room for When People are Dead...

I would say a chronological 2 cd anthology. That would show the developments etc. I will think about the song choices. (Then mayby edit an 1 cd best of.) That would be my ideal.

Matsrep - a 2 CD comp would definitely be ideal. It would give you the potential to truly do justice to the band's catalog.

I'd be interested to see what people here come up with for 2 CD anthologies containing 36-40 tracks. I mean, Microdisney's From Daunt Square to Elsewhere took two CDs to cover 5 albums worth of material, so why should the Go-Betweens be relegated to only one?

I saw this ages ago but needed time to think. The new compilation has all of the ingredients but something is missing.
I always like chronological compilations because, as Matsrep says, you can follow the developments.
Anyway:
People Say
Dusty In Here
Ask
Cattle And Cane
Bachelor Kisses
Five Words
Part Company
Spring Rain
The Wrong Road
Apology Accepted
Right Here
Bye Bye Pride
The Clarke Sisters
Streets Of Your Town
Dive For Your Memory
The Clock
He Lives My Life
Finding You
Darlinghurst Nights
The Mountains of Delray

None from Send me a Lullaby or Bright Yellow Bright Orange. I really don't think any of those songs stack up to the ones I've got here.
Just going through all of their songs, how many of them are "arresting"?...they stop you and make you listen to the story and the turn of phrase.
