Mark was a huge contributor to this site in the early days. He was an avid fan of the band. So much so that he pissed off a lot of people and was eventually banned from this site. He died last week on his beloved motor bike and his funeral is in Victoria in a small town today. Interestingly enough he had just recently surfaced again on Peter Milton Walsh Apartments blog. He seemed older and wiser. Vale Mark Ilsley |

I've been here since 2005 and I've never heard of Vale Mark Ilsley. Sounds like my kind of guy though, nothing wrong with being a bit outspoken if you ask me, as long as its within the parameters of decency and personal abuse is avoided. R.I.P |

I remember him. His legacy here lives on in the archives. I think he was banned circa 2004 R.I.P. |

I wasn't around these parts when Mark was, but saying someone grew "older and wiser" seems a nice tribute. We should all be so lucky. Thanks, Lindy. |

I remember Mark - he certainly ruffled one or two feathers round here, but he seemed a decent guy underneath it. Very sad to hear the news - RIP. |

Thank you for this post Lindy. Thank you for thinking of us. I do remember Mark Ilsley. He was a major contributor back when I first discovered this board, I think in 2003. He was a very important part of what made this an online site that I kept coming back to. He had a lot of interesting ideas about the Go Betweens. He was maybe a little bit too much the "alpha male" for some but I found that easy to overlook, especially since I was a newbie to the Go Betweens. As far as I can tell, a handful of folks started picking at him nearly simultaneously at one point and then he melted down, probably embarrassing himself. We all have our behavior patterns that make us miserable from time to time. It looks like Mark's was a tendency to go on an anti-viral scale attack when somebody picked at him. If he overcame that tendency as part of becoming "older and wiser" he did very well indeed. One of the oddities of Mark that I remember which was personally appealing was his parallel passions for seemingly macho things like motorcycles. I think tennis was another, but that might be a false memory. The motorcycles I remember for certain. That caught my attention because I have a similar parallel passion for elderly automobiles. Grant didn't drive and Robert's main commentary on automobiles was to state that he preferred surprises like spring rain, so it always seemed just a little odd for us to have these other seemingly dissonant passions, out of the accepted Go Betweens way of life so to speak. I've just done a bit of enjoyable strolling through the archives. This was back when David Nichols was a regular participant. Unfortunately I had not yet discovered the Cannanes--who I love--or else I would have tortured him with a LOT of questions about them. I remember a number of people who used to post on here, such as Pete Azzopardi, Spence and, more recently, Jeff Whiteaker who I'll be seeing in Bratislava in a couple of months. Some left because of the death of Grant, others because life was happening and yet others because they started to feel unwelcome here. It's sad when that happens. RIP Mark. |

I took Jerry's tip about the Archives and searched Mark out. So yes Randy, you are right about Marks passion for motorcycles, he did share that in a few posts. Searching the archives I came across a laugh out loud post from Padraig, when for some reason he was bemoaning the fact that Quality Street chocolates were a bit of a misnomer, a bit like calling your album "The Best Of Sting". Well I thought it was funny anyway, so thanks for that Mark!! |

Crumbs Randy, I'd forgotten about all that - it was kind of horrible was n't it! Never really looked at the archive before, I think it is the first time something created on line has made me feel nostalgic, all that anticipation of the GB gigs, Oceans Apart, the Barbican show. And of course what happened to all those people who used to post? One good thing I did eventually get into Teenage Fan Club - even if I never did look at their message board! |

Yeah, it was sad. But there were a lot of good threads before things went south. |

Mark loved bowls and wore the white uniform and competed in his area in Victoria. There was a big row here when someone made fun of him for that.Say hi to Jeff for me Randy. Hi Padraig. |

Hi Lindy. I remember that long discussion about different types of bowling. |

Thanks Lindy, I will do. C Gull, if I had to give back all of the music I've been turned onto by folks on this board I'd have to give up half of my CD/record collection. |
