You got my number man...naw, actually I've heard of em and know that a couple of members played on Jay Farrar's 1st solo record after he unceremoniously dumped the first version of Son Volt. Also, they played in Baton Rouge (waaaay deep south) where I lived quite a bit but I never got my lazy ass out to see em...don't know that much about 'em otherwise, but they have an excellent critical rep... |

I saw them at SXSW and they are a truely great band but the songs are not that strong. I can see why people would want them as their backing band. I kept expecting Springsteen to walk out and start singing which would have sounded just right. Ryan Adams should do a rock album with them. The drummer is very very good. |

More on your boys, Kev...don't get discouraged: though the headline seems to diss them, it sounds like the reviewer really likes the band: http://www.villagevoice.com/music/0612,mariani,72555,22.html |

He be trippin', huh? One of those reviews where you go, "what the f___ was that about?" That's why I like a mag that comes out here, Entertainment Weekly, because it assigns each item reviewed a simple grade, based on A through F, so you're never left with that ambiguity. Sounds like a really good disc - I'm gonna have to check it out... Wanted to ax you: have you heard of, or read, a book called "Rip It Up and Start Again" by Simon Reynolds? It's a history of post punk I'm about halfway through and really enjoying...You probably know way more about all these bands than I do, so it wouldn't be as informative, but it's still massively entertaining. Some of these bands seem like it's way more fun to read about them, than it would be to actually see them perform! It has a great chapter on Orange Juice, but there's only a slight mention of the GBs, for having been their label mates. |

yep, got it last year hardin. i found it a great reference book, i loved just dipping in and out of chapters depending on which band i wanted to read about. simon reynolds is a well respected music journalist from the uk, used to write for melody maker and now writes for uncut. he has a blog which you may find interesting, also has lots of good links to other sites http://blissout.blogspot.com/ my mate gerry reads it religiously and swears by it |

I guess it's just now coming out in the states. I believe our version may be shorter too, with several chapters cut (those greedy bastids)...I usually read this kind of book the way you talk about, dipping into chapters at my whim, but this guy is such a good writer it's sucked me in - I'm going cover to cover...A lot of this stuff I simply missed - I had lots of "cool" punker and "new wave" friends, but a lot of things, like Joy Division and Scritti Politti, were just not widely available here...and it was before the Internets (as George W. calls it) so you couldn't even order or download them like you can now... |
