You are correct, sir - about the non-suckiness of said items. I have the VU, and don't know why I haven't bought Star Time. I have instead a completely inadequate, lame-ass 2 disc comp by JB, that just doesn't cut it. There can never be too much of the Godfather in anybody's life! | ||

"Star Time" is essential. A great listen start to finish from an artist who made far too many albums and different versions of the same songs to ever track down. This distills decades of work into about five hours of greatness. Comic Book Guy voice: Best...Box...Set...Ever. | ||

I thought the Joy division boxset was such treat for fans, from the packaging, through to the actual rawness of the overall production, beautiful. I got a LOVE box set from about 10 years ago on Elektra, nice booklet and a great compilation with a few outtakes. | ||

Hardin, the bad news first. The set was released by RhinoHandmade back in 2004. It was a Limited Edition of 2500 copies and comprised of the five albums ( Words And Music; And So: On; Letters; Land's End; El Mirage ) he recorded for Reprise in the 1970's plus an albums worth of outtakes/demos ( seventeen tracks ) spread across four discs together with a fifth disc ( seventeen tracks ) containing his live performances at The Royal Albert Hall/Barking Town Hall in 1972. It sold out in a matter of months. The packaging is nice although it has to be handled carefully to avoid damage and includes a lyric sheet and 48 page booklet ( with rare photos ) detailing his career. A superb package. Although the box set is long gone, the individual albums are currently available having been released by Collectors Choice sometime last year. If you have never heard Jimmy's own version of Galveston then you are in for a treat. It bears little resemblance to the well known version ( Glen Campbell ) and contains an absolutely wonderful guitar intro by Freddy Tackett Jnr. One of the great songwriters of the 1960's/70's. | ||

Randy, the Idle Race Box Set was a wonderful package. It was a two disc affair and contained the tracks from their three albums ( Birthday Party; Idle Race; Time Is which I believe was recorded after Lynne left the group ) plus ten non-album tracks, three previously unreleased alternate versions and two tracks by The Nightriders ( Lynne's first band.) Not sure of the story behind the release but I have long wondered if there were legal issues with it as, if my memory serves me correctly, it was only available for a very brief period ( months? ) before being withdrawn from sale. As far as I am concerned, it was downhill all the way for Lynne from the moment he moved on to E.L.O. | ||

I like the second Nuggets 4 CD box that came out a year or so ago that covered the 1979 to early 80's period. Never could fiqure out why they included The La's "There She Goes" though, as it came out years later than the others in the set. | ||

spence, what i heard about the scott walker box set wasn't really good. the sound should be not as good as it should be. i read about faulty discs. i read about that one disc plays the music on only one channel. the booklet is made loveless and poor on information. the songs should be not in chronical order but rather more in topical order. i didn't bought it. beacuse of the above mentioned and because the price was high. but kurt's statement is shorter and in its shortness maybe much preciser than mine. | ||

A four CD US box set called left of the dial, which featured cattle & cane. Its a compilation thing with lots of 'alternative' 80's stuff...cure, new order, violent femmes, camper van beethoven and so on. Cheers Jon |
