Is it just me or are music festivals now shit? Here in Scotland the biggest one is T in The Park which is being shown in highlight form on BBC. I was so non-plussed by the bill I have not even bothered to record it. The Line-Up: Includes... Arctic Monkeys, Boy Kill Boy, Feeder, Franz Ferdinand, Goldfrapp, Gomez, Hard Fi, Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, Maximo Park, Paul Weller, Pharrell, Placebo, Primal Scream, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Richard Ashcroft, Rob Da Bank, Sigur Ros, The Magic Numbers, The Strokes, The Subways, The Who, The Zutons, Zero 7 Apart from Prinmal Scream I wouldnt watch any of these acts if they played in my garden. I went to this festival for the only time 3 years ago and saw Flaming Lips, Kings of Leon, Super Furry Animals and REM. OK, REM are a bit shit now but the live show is still ok, and they were once the best band on the planet. Also if Jack White hadnt had his car accident a week earlier, the White Stripes would also have been on the bill. Compare and contrast with this year. V Festival. http://www.vfestival.com/index.html?pid=37 This may be an even worse bill than Reading, apart from the sainted Morrissey. Is it just me or are promoters booking "safe" acts these days? You can imagine the riders at these festivals being fruit juice, tofu and fruit, as opposed to beer,spirits,currys and fags. Give me strength, sorry about the rant but if this keeps up James Blcunt will be headlining Glastonbury next year. | ||

My Festival days are over now Kevin, having doen one glastonbury the one with Costello (of course) Van, the waterboys and the the Bhundu Boys who were great,can't remeber any of the others now.I did the medical Tent at reading about the same time late eighties with The Pogues ( around the time Shane was sporting a tea cosy as head wear)Les Negresse Verte, and Billy Bragg. I think the Wonder stuff were on but didn't see them . But the best memory was at the end of the night picking up the drunks in a pick-up truck. Festivals are over rated and mostly forgotten. | ||

Actually, just remembered that on my recent holidy to Nice I bypassed the chance to listen to the whole of a Strokes set. There was an open air venue where most nights Jazz funk acts played to my total disinterest, On the 2nd last night, the Strokes played this venue where I kid you not, you could sit on some grass approx 100 yards from the stage and listen, but not see the acts. I listened to 2 songs from the set, yawned and moved on. Its not taht I dont like the Strokes - Is This It is very listenable, its just Ive heard better for 30 years or more. My Kids wanted to hear more, especially after hearing Heart In A Cage(the one with the wibbly guitar solo), however when I pointed out they could have some sweets instead they wanted to move on. | ||

never was into that festival thing. too much bands playing that i don't like. and the ones which i like didn't play just half an hour or so - despite of the bad weather problem. that's why i don't like festivals. but all the open air concerts and festivals to which i went in my youth happened when the sun shone merciless - and i had always a good time. | ||

The South By South West festival in Austin, Texas every March is one that every music lover should try to get to at least once in their life. I was there in 2001 and really hope I can get there again sometime. It's up there with going to the World Cup for me. | ||

festivals are a bit like mid 80's simple minds tour programmes, overrated, a waste of time and worth f*ck all in years to come. unless your between 18-25 and love eating shite burgers and pissing in your neighbours tent there is no real point in going. | ||

I used to love The Fleadh in Finsbury Park, it was an Irish themed fesival, yet none of the acts ever were. It was an excuse to see the plastic paddy's come out when the only slightly irish Shane came on with the popes. I did see Mr Forster there. there was about 10 people in the tent watching him, thenit filled up and he ended with Rock n Roll Friend, and guess who joined him on stage? Mr Mclennan, and when they finished the song it was one of the most touching sights I ever did see, they walked off arm over shoulder with each other down these steeps as the canvas tent curtain fell behind them, ah what a sight!! | ||

Festivals are always a problem because there is usually so much shit but then, for us downunder, one act that has never toured and/or probably never will never tour again. I usually try to get to the warm up gigs, even though it ends up costing more than the festival itself. | ||

Festivals + shit. One of the first I ever went to was in the late 70's at Loch Lomond (Scotland) and it featured a very eclectic line-up of talent from assorted dodgy Glasgow pub-bands, through various punks outfits (UK Subs, Stranglers) to the Average White Band. Anyway it was held in the salubrious surroundings of the Balloch Bear Park and the bears had only been removed a couple of days before. Which meant that there was a large amount of their excrement still lying around. You had to be really careful where you trod. |
