"Exile on Main St."--not a bad album by far, but I'd much rather listen to "Sticky Fingers." I don't quite get why "Exile" is a universally acclaimed masterpiece. "Tonight's the Night"--same deal as with "Exile"...many others by Young I'd rather hear. "The Basement Tapes"--love Dylan, but the sound is just so shitty... "Nevermind"--a very, very good album, but how is it one of the three best albums ever (as it is in most polls)? I'd take any Husker Du or Pixies album over it. "Sgt. Pepper"--and I like the Beatles. A lot. But this is more showboating and sound effects than it is a collection of good songs. "Revolver" is far superior. "Forever Changes"--sorry, never really heard what was special about this. "Never Mind the Bollocks"--Pistols were a singles band. "Who's Next"--20 years ago, I would have said this was one of the greatest rock albums ever. But I can't imagine being able to sit through it now. Has aged VERY badly. | ||

I love the Beatles but never understood why the White Album gets so much recognition over their other stuff. As someone said here it would have made a much better single album, minus Lennon's Revolution 9 and Macca's Obladi Obliblahh.. | ||

The Basement Tapes definetely, I like Bob's songs, but The Band are boring. Never Mind The Bollocks, suppose you had to be there. Bowie's Low, side 2 in particular, Heroes is more like it. Anything by post-Barret Floyd, Eagles, The Beatles or Magazine. | ||

Jerry, what have I told you...Devoto is God, now repeat after me... Devoto is God!! LOL Erm, Nevermind, Pearl Jam's 1st album, Pet Sounds, also the new breed of metal bands, never seen the attraction, and Feeder are the worst group yet to have ben created, they are truly awful. | ||

OK here goes Flaming Lips-Yoshimi Mercury Rev-Deserter Songs,(Sorry Padraig-I've tried to love them,but unfortunately just like them) Beach Boys-Pet Sounds Most of the ones mentioned above Still can't get the first Neil Young CD (is it a grower Andreas) Nirvana-Nevermind. 1/2 my collection to be honest, in as much as I bought them thinking they would be great and in some way have been disappointed.Which probably means I buy to much or are too influenced by recommendations. | ||

Forgiven Jerry. Your graciousness means you remain on my Christmas card list. I agreee with you on Yoshimi. Pet Sounds is awesome though. It really is. You have to remove it from the hype. Difficult thing to do, but not impossible. It's one of the greatest records ever made and I will brook no argument! | ||

Padraig, the "Pet Sounds" endorsement coming from you means something. I've never listened to it because of my complete and utter loathing for the Beach Boys, based on their radio hits and their dumb name. I've just never been willing to give them a chance, which is pigheaded of me. Maybe it's time to finally give it a listen. And thanks, guys, for mentioning Flaming Lips. All their "masterpieces" are insanely overrated. | ||

Kurt, my first time hearing Pet Sounds was after buying it on cassette in Golden Discs in Patrick Street, Cork in December 1991. I immediately put it into my walkman. It was dark and wet but I was wearng a Hawaiian shirt underneath my leather jacket; I had a smart, funny, beautiful girlfriend; and I was about to leave her behind to move to Australia. I got it immediately. | ||

pet sounds is my favourite album of all times (o.k. since i discoverd jerry jesters and judy henskes album farewell aldebaran i think pet sounds have to share the crown). drawn into the beach boys cosmos in 1989 (very late, but i heard their songs in the seventies on the mainstream radios and a lot of fat blokes liked their music, so i don't waste any thoughts about them) i immediately bought pet sounds and was blown away by this music. it deeply hit my heart. except sloop john b. every song rouses emotions. the songs are rich in ideas and simple at the same time. but like all this is a subjective feeling which i share with padraig and david thomas..... | ||

jerry, i don't think that neil young's first album is a grower. i liked it from the first time. i just have an affinity with that sound - and you maybe not. but you can't put it on the overrated list, because in the media/critics-world it is rather rated not so good. | ||

Andreas you are right I was in a contrary mood yesterday.I'll back down on that one as I love Neil Young (mostly). To be fair I've only played it in the car so not really concentrated.The main problem I have with it is that the sound is not that great,I'm sure it's an old analogue copy because you can here some hiss. | ||

Jerry, regarding the sound. Does that not mean it sounds great then? Give me that old analogue sound over that bright, brash digital sound anyday. To be fair, producers and engineers have finally come to grips with digital sound after the abomination of the 80s and 90s. | ||

Yeah, funny how it's only taken them 20 years to figure out how to make CDs sound almost as good as vinyl did in the '70s. All this talk about Neil's first album, and I've never been able to listen to it more than twice even though I'm a big fan. One of these days I'm going to have to give it another try... | ||

Kevin I like the old analogue sound etc but for some reason it just doesn't sound great in my car. |
