Stones - just play them more Pistols - what a gimmick Oasis - they got away with it! Who - a good racket Pixies - the real deal Doors - play the blues (not a lot in this one though) Lou - still interesting after all these years next is a draw Chem Bros - another good racket... |

I play The Rolling Stones more often and have a lot more of their records. If I'd been a teenager in the 60s I suspect I would have (wrongly) dismissed the early Beatles records as pop fodder for the masses. The Clash. I always thought they were overrated until I actually listened to them by buying the brilliant three CD Clash on Broadway comp in the late 90s! Never Mind The Bollocks is great; but that's it, one album. Blur by miles. Damon Albarn is a very talented songwriter. Oasis have some good songs and a few great ones but I have very little of their stuff. I'll probably buy the best of they have coming out later this year though. The Who remind me of being a teenager (when the world just didn't understand me). This is a good thing. I like The Kinks but don't have anything like the same sort of emotional investment with them. Nirvana or Pixies is the toughest call to make. I instantly thought Nirvana, but then thought that was only because Kurt Cobain killed himself (or did he?). Too close to call on this one Kevin. Velvet Underground. The Doors remind me of being a teenager (when the world just didn't understand me). This is a bad thing. I saw Lou Reed in front of 3000 people and he was awful. I saw David Bowie in front of 300 people and he was brilliant. But Lou gets the nod for New York and Songs For Drella (not forgetting John Cale on the latter). I have nothing by either Slade or T Rex. Not my cup of tea. I read a couple of interviews with Noddy Holder recently though and he seems like a decent bloke. Chemical Brothers by miles. Their albums have always seemed to me to be about the music; while Prodigy's output seemed like little more than packaging rebellion for drug-addled clubbers. (Some cracking tunes nonetheless). |

Beatles. Rubber Soul,Revolver and the White album beat anything the Stones evey did. Clash. This one is fairly easy as they had two great albums and 3 very good ones and a very good EP versus one great album by the Sex Pistols. Blur. I perfer Ride over both of them though. Who. But they shoud have hung it up after Moon died. LZ had the sense to after Bonzo went belly up. Pixies. More enjoyable to listen to. Velvets. I like some of the Doors songs, but they got overplayed so much on the radio. I have them on vinyl but not on CD. Lou and Bowie are very, very close. I'll give the nod to Lou though as Bowie hasn't done anything decent since Scary Monsters in 1980 and Lou came up with The Blue Mask, New York and Drella after that. Bowie was better than Lou though in the 70's. T. Rex. Jeepster puts them over the edge. Chemical Brothers or Prodigy? Pass on this one as I'm not up on their music. |

Beatles or Stones? don't like both very much, but i think i prefer the stones because of their end sixties/early seventies records. Clash or Sex Pistols? don't like both very much, but i prefer the clash, because of 'this is england'. Oasis or Blur? don't like both very much, but i prefer blur. parklife was impressive. don't know if i like it today. Kinks or Who? don't like both very much, but i prefer the who which is just only a feeling. never was much into the kinks despite all the critics love them., but waterloo sunset is simply one of the best songs ever written. Nirvana or Pixies? don't like both very much, but i prefer the pixies, because once ago i loved their first two records. Velvets or The Doors? don't like the doors. i once bought a jim morrison book. second hand crap (not the book, but the lyrics). when poetics than i prefer the originals like rimbaud, verlaine, lautreamont. jim morrison always seemed to me a bit childish. but i like the velvets. what a great band! Lou Reed or Bowie? even when i like the velevets , i don't like much of lou reed's solo records. so i prefer bowie. Slade or T Rex? difficult question, because it should have been the question sweet or slade?, because that was the battle at that time. i prefer slade, because i was a fan. but t.rex made the better music. Chemical Brothers or Prodigy? don't like both very much, but i would choose chemical brothers. this is music to me which i prefer to hear on the radio. |

spence, my first thoughts about the dexy's or abc were similar. but they have in common that they made wonderful pop-albums around the same time and both had follow-up (abc's second/dexy's third) which not repeated the formula and so these albums weren't not albums for the masses. nevertheless don't stand me down and beauty stab are perfect albums. i love them. |

Going back to Kevin's original list: Beatles Clash Blur (Oasis is a joke) Who (but they, like the Kinks, sucked after '71 or so) Pixies Velvets (this one is so not even close; Doors were vile) Reed (Bowie's best albums are better than Lou's solo ones, but Lou continued to be valid artistically way longer) T. Rex Chemical Brothers, but who cares, really? Then Andreas's list: Hsker D (though the Minutemen were great) Hate Yes and Genesis equally Jefferson Airplane (but early stuff only) Specials Can Skynyrd, but it's just a case disliking them less Curtis Mayfield Stooges Not up on either Clark or Parsons, sorry No idea... No opinion... |

A few more for anyone who wants to bite: Patti Smith or Chrissie Hynde? Television or Talking Heads? PJ Harvey or Bjork? (or Kate Bush?) Neil Young or Bob Dylan? Buzzcocks or Undertones (or Ramones?) Pere Ubu or Devo? Dead Kennedys or Black Flag? Robert Forster solo or Grant McLennan solo? R.E.M or Smiths? Mine (which are mostly obvious by how I typed them): Patti Television (just barely) PJ Neil (but this is a coin toss) Buzzcocks Pere Ubu DKs Grant Very tough...R.E.M., but only by not penalizing them for post-"Automatic" decline |

minutemen or hüsker dü? no question, the minutemen hit my nerves with their music, their lifes and all that around. on the double nickles on the dime double-lp they wrote the words: ''take that huskers!''. but the husker's came short after. yes or genesis? in the seventies i first was a fan of pink floyd, then i changed to genesis and then to yes (and gong, but gong is not the question at this moment). now thirty years later i still prefer yes. some of their greatest stuff is like a kind of pre-speed metal without being metal, or so. jefferson airplane or grateful dead? the deads workingman's dead is one of my all time favourites. and i have a secret love affair with jefferson airplane. but maybe i choose grateful dead. specials or madness? no question, i prefer the specials. in my opinion more content, more political. and the voice of terry hall. can or neu? this is a difficult question. maybe neu!and this could be the start of a new thread.... the allman brothers or lynyrd skynyrd? this is easier. the allman brothers, surely. duane allman and dicky betts, guitar heroes. curtis mayfield or mavin gaye? curtis mayfield is my favourite soulman. i like the impressions stuff, i like his solo-work and the song 'we people who are darker than blue is' one of my alltime faves. what a song! mc5 or the stooges? difficult, too. but i have a light tendency in the direction of the mc5. gene clark or gram parsons? the first flying burrito album is on my best albums ever list. but when i listen to gene clark's music my heart melts away. and you will know us by the trail of dead or at the drive in or mars volta? i prefer the trail of dead. dexy's or abc? the dexy's made three great albums, abc only two. |

Patti Smith or Chrissie Hynde? mrs smith , no question. Television or Talking Heads? television, no question. PJ Harvey or Bjork? (or Kate Bush?) pj harvey, no question. Neil Young or Bob Dylan? neil young, no question. Buzzcocks or Undertones (or Ramones?) a question which is not to be answered (ramones, definitely!). Pere Ubu or Devo? pere ubu. david thomas is great. Dead Kennedys or Black Flag? rather dead kennedys than black flag Robert Forster solo or Grant McLennan solo? slight advantage for mr. forster R.E.M or Smiths? the smiths, especially for all their singles and covers. |

kurt, me neither, except on that first album. i have sometimes problems with voices or the kind of singing. morrisey. i loved the smiths at the beginning, then that moaning kind of singing get me boring. or liz fraser from the cocteau twins. first i loved them, but around treasue can't stand this voice any longer. david byrne's voice is also a voice which is not long bearable (to say nothing of that epigones clap your hands and say yeah) |

God I really love this board sometimes. Trawling through the replies I got to Spences reply to the question "Yes or Genesis" posed by Andreas. Spence, God love him, simply replied No. I couldnt help but burst out laughing, that is by a country mile the most genius reply by anyone, ever on this board. Spence, I salute you sir. |

Kurt, in reply to yours Patti Smith or Chrissie Hynde? - Neither I'm afraid (always thought Horses to be vastly overrated) Television or Talking Heads? - Talking Heads for 4 great albums on the spin PJ Harvey or Bjork? (or Kate Bush?) - PJ Neil Young or Bob Dylan? - Unfair on Neil this one is it not, Dylan is untouchable. Although, in a similar way to folks saying that Lou Reed is better than Bowie because of latter output, this also applies here. Buzzcocks or Undertones (or Ramones?) The first two wouldnt exist without The Ramones, even though they were great in their own right Pere Ubu or Devo? - Pere Ubu Dead Kennedys or Black Flag? - Dont care, sorry Robert Forster solo or Grant McLennan solo? - RF R.E.M or Smiths? - Draw |

Patti Smith or Chrissie Hynde? - Neither Television or Talking Heads? - Tough one, but Talking Heads have a better catalogue. However, I never saw them live, but did see Television a few years ago and they were awesome. PJ Harvey or Bjork? (or Kate Bush?) - Kate, but I really like PJ too. She's great live also. Neil Young or Bob Dylan? - Bob, but I love a lot of Neil's stuff too. Buzzcocks or Undertones (or Ramones?) Undertones, and not just because I'm Irish. Pere Ubu or Devo? - Pere Ubu Dead Kennedys or Black Flag? - Neither really. Robert Forster solo or Grant McLennan solo? - Grant, because there is more to love. Neither of them ever bettered Danger In The Past though. R.E.M or Smiths? - R.E.M., even if they have jumped the shark. |

New Order. Really, come on! Pet Shop Boys might give good interview (the recent interview with The Word being a minor classic), but most of their music sucks. Joy Division Soft Cell; but only because the one 7" (Tainted Love) I have by Soft Cell is one more than the entirety of my Associates collection. I like what I've heard of them on Uncut compilation CDs though. Jerry, how can you be bothered to sell CDs that come with music mags? Surely the 50p you inevitably are offered negates the purpose? Roxy Human League by light years. Birthday Party. But probably only because I've got zip by Magazine (apart from a couple of tracks on Uncut / Mojo). |

Pavement, but Yo La run them pretty close. Tom Waits New Pornographers. Saw Shins live and they were rubbish. New Pornographers were great live. Ray Davies came on and sang a Kinks song with them. How's that for cool. Wilco; though I've seen both of them live and not been impressed by either. Neko Kurt, my list is all Irish bands. Most of whom never sold diddly outside Ireland. |

Kurts list Yo La Tengo or Pavement? - YLT by a whisker Tom Waits or Captain Beefheart? - Mr Waits Shins or New Pornographers? - If the Shins new album is a corker it will be them, at the moment NPs shade it Flaming Lips or Wilco? - this has been the hardest vote for me, Wilco win it in a photo finish. Mr Padraig Collins should hang his head in shame for saying Wilco didnt impress him live, that hangover must be throbbing big style and affecting your memory Padraig. I have saw Wilco on their last two tours, each time magnificent. Cat Power or Neko Case? - Neko shades it with bonus points for being in New Pornos. |

I never gave answers to my own list. I'm with all of Kevin's picks, except for NPs over the Shins (but it's close). |

Kurt's list: Yo La Tengo or Pavement? Yo La Tengo all the way with an Autumn Sweater! Tom Waits or Captain Beefheart? Tom Waits based on the strenght of the songwriting. Although I have never listened to Lick My Decal Off, which I heard was great. Shins or New Pornographers? NP's. Flaming Lips or Wilco? Wilco. If it was mid 90's Wilco we are talkig about, then I would go with Son Volt over Wilco. Cat Power or Neko Case? Neko. I love Fox Confessor. |

Kevin, I saw Wilco in January 2002 at the Big Day Out festival in Sydney. I think it was just a bad place to see them. I saw PJ Harvey at the same festival and she was good, but I'd seen her a few nights earlier in a theatre show and she was incredible. It goes back to the festivals are shit thread. |

Wilco were on fire man!! When I saw them in Birmingham in front of 500 people!!!!!! They were awesome, quite unique, I then bought their DVD which is hilarious and thought -provoking, I wished I'd have seen the DVD before seeing them though. Awaiting them coming ove here again. Mr Tweedy is unique, there's no doubt. Piss all over The Flaming Lips. |

Beatles or Stones? I think I mentioned somewhere else that I was a Stones partisan when I was a kid in the 60s. So long as we consider only the records made while both groups were still together, I still prefer the Stones. Shins or New Pornographers? What a weird coupling. Shins. The New Pornographers are too slick and derivative for my taste. Cat Power or Neko Case? I agree with Michael; "Fox Confessor" puts Neko Case well over. The Kinks or the Who? The Kinks because they made far more good records before going bad. New Order or Pet Shop Boys? Neither. Gram Parsons or Gene Clark? Gene Clark. They both disintegrated but Clark took more time to do so and made many more great records and an astonishing number of great unreleased recordings. Better lyricist too. Jefferson Airplane or Grateful Dead? I don't have much time for either but the Airplane's "Takes Off" and "Surrealistic Pillow" put them ahead. MC5 or Stooges? Stooges by a country mile. MC5 just sound like dated late 60s acid rock to me. Sehr schlechte. Curtis Mayfield or Marvin Gaye? I like them both but I give the nod to Mayfield for "People Get Ready," the song most certain to bring tears to my eyes. Yes or Genesis? Spence's answer is the right one. Joy Division or the Bunnymen? I'd never think of coupling these two. Joy Division, and it's not even close. Robert solo or Grant solo? I will probably always choose Grant because of his consistency. Clash or Sex Pistols? I'm going to take the minority viewpoint here. Sex Pistols. Their recordings were punk wall-of-sound masterpieces and "Bodies" is the only great abortion song I've ever heard. Yes, they were a singles band; what's wrong with that? Neil Young or Bob Dylan? This coupling seems unfair. Could it ever not be Dylan? Television or Talking Heads? This one is REALLY tough. Television had the good sense to break up before making rubbish like "Little Creatures" and everything that followed. But the Heads made "Remain in Light." Sorry, I chicken out on making a choice here. Here are a few of my own: Go Gos or X-Ray Spex? X-Ray Spex. Emmylou Harris or Marianne Faithfull? Marianne Faithfull Nick Cave or Mark Lanegan? still thinking about this one. Neil Young or Michael Nesmith? They both wandered all over the musical map, making great things and total rubbish. I choose Nesmith. Buzzcocks or Cure? Buzzcocks. Magazine or Roxy Music? Magazine. David Byrne or Ed Kuepper? Ed Kuepper. Zombies or Left Banke? Zombies; their stable line-up made for more consistent records. Byrds or Beau Brummels? Beau Brummels. I almost always like the underdog. The Brummels were less pompous, wrote more of their own material from the start, had a much better lead guitarist in Ron Elliot and a much better lead vocalist in Sal Valentino. Both bands disintegrated in about the same manner at about the same speed. One had a miraculously sympathetic record company and made a lot of money and the other one worked with a threadbare independent only to be sold to a new (future major) label that had no clue how to handle them, all while they starved. |

Go Gos Emmylou Harris Nick Cave over Mark Lanegan, but it's very close. Neil Young or Michael Nesmith? Good choices. I would choose Nesmith against Young's quieter stuff. But it's the loud, electric, Crazy Horse Young that I love. Buzzcocks. Roxy. Ed. Zombies. Byrds. |

Padraig I've met Joe Wall a couple times and he seems a good guy but I can't stand the Stunning's music. If there was one Irish band that should have got more acclaim (apart from the Blades and Microdisney) I'd have to say Toasted Heretic. Wilco V Flaming Lips? Love them both but I'd pick Wilco anyday. Also I saw Wilco touring Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in 2002 when I didn't know any of their stuff (apart from the Mermaid Avenue album with Billy Bragg) and it is probably the best gig I've seen this decade, they were incredible. And if there are any Wilco/Jeff Tweedy fans out there I'd really recommend picking up the lastest Loose Fur album 'Born again in the USA' while they wait for the new Wilco studio album, which I hope is better than A ghost is Born. Can't wait to see them live again but they only seem to play summer festivals in Ireland unfortunately, another reason to dislike festivals I suppose. I reckon I'll just have to do with their live album which is great. |

Ah Kev, you love to stir shit, don't you? Alright, I'll play your fiendish little parlor game...here goes... Clash or Sex Pistols? Sex Pistols by far...they were more meaningful, scarier, darker and walked it like they talked it. They were bad ass and they meant it, man. Singles shmingles. The Clash were, on the other hand, always a little, I dunno...cornball and schlocky, with their posturing and facile glomming on to any socialist cause, no matter how silly or muddled...still they made a lot of great music, but still the SP's win that one Oasis or Blur? Oasis. Say what you will, back in the day they wrote some great, catchy, solid pop rock tunes, with the big cinematic choruses...admittedly, their songwriting muse seems to have deserted them of late. Morning Glory is definitely maybe a classic. Whereas Blur have never shown me anything. None of their songs have even stuck in the old memory banks or begged to be heard again, apart from that catchy "woo hoo", Pixies ripoff song. Kinks or Who? Love 'em both, but the Kinks win, based on RD's stellar, epic songwriting. Btw, even Townshend hisself has acknowledged, in interviews, his belief that Ray is a better songwriter. Nirvana or Pixies? Again, love 'em both, but Nirvana trumps, based on what they meant, at that precise moment in history, the songwriting, the ability to concoct tunes that were not only bad ass and punky, but great pop singles...so many of KC's tunes were just indelible. Admittely, without the Pixies, there would probably have been no Nirvana. Velvets or The Doors? Velvets. Don't rate the Doors at all. "I am the Lizard King/ I can do anything"...Good one, Jim. Now shut up and drink some more vodka... Reed or Bowie? Reed. Though they both have produced epic, wonderful and earthshaking stuff...haven't done much for us lately... Wilco or Flaming Lips? Wilco, Wilco a thousand times over...don't rate the Lipz at all, and I think Wilco have been consistently great over the years. Their recent live album was the shit. T.Rex or Slade? T.Rex by many country miles. Adored them, and really, still do...great stuff that makes you want to scream, "boogie!" (in an English accent). Maybe, as a Yank, I'm unable to get Slade...maybe it's one of those things like "footy"...I did get a kick out of their wacky haircuts and outfits though...weren't they the ones that wore them fancy plaid britches with platform shoes... Chemical Brothers or Prodigy? Once again, as a Yank, I just don't really get the appeal of this sort of music...I do, once again, dig that koo koo doo the lead "singer" of Prodigy sports...although I confuse him with the lead singer of Flock of Nimrods.... |

Aw dagnabit! I forgot the most important and demonic of your questions, Kevinator. It's evil because it forces you to choose between things you love... I love both of those bands, and it is impossible to imagine the world without them, unlike say, Justin Timberlake. But, it is the Beatles for me. They truly were geniuses and I think it can be argued that they changed the course of history in several ways...The confluence of those four personalities and talents was just, however you slice it, insanely remarkable. You won't find it again. The Stones, at the height of their powers, were merely great. |

Monkees or Partridge Family? Monkees, of course. They wrote some of their own stuff and even offered up some of their own clunky playing and didn't have to speed up the vocals to sound right. Reed or Bowie? Reed burns brighter at his best but Bowie burned longer. So I choose Bowie. Today anyway. Little Keith, your comments about the Clash vs. the Sex Pistols helped me clarify my reasons for my choice. The Clash suffered from the offense of being EARNEST. I can totally accept that in some places but not in punk. The Sex Pistols were magnificently cynical. It will always be the Go Bees for me over the Triffids. It would be a harder choice if the Triffids had not been trying so hard to be big major label stars. I confess that I haven't heard a lot of the acts listed on here. I have yet to hear the Associates. Somehow I got the idea that they are primarily synth stuff and I can only take limited doses of that. I'm definitely NOT a Kraftwerk partisan. Embarrassingly, I haven't really heard much Tom Waits. I dismissed him for being so chummy with Rickie Lee Jones who I can't stand. With what little I know of him, though, I'd think it would make more sense to put him up against somebody like Vic Chesnutt than Captain Beefheart. And I never got into stuff like Nirvana or Slade and even the Pixies hit the "ho-hum" button for me. When I saw them a few months ago, they were just the closing act for the Thrills. And get ready for this: as far as I know I have NEVER heard Oasis. I have no idea what they sound like. |

Randy, you lucky, lucky guy. Oasis is meat and potatos stodge rock for the masses. If you read any of my posts you will know I have little or no regard for The Beatles. Oasis are a Beatles tribute band so you can guess what I think of them. As far as Kraftwerk goes I would urge you to check them out. The 3 albums from the mid 70s are landmarks in music. Kraftwerk managed something unique, they brought soul to a fairly soulless genre of music. |

It's intriguing that the Americans on the board have little regard for the Clash and love the Pistols.I would say by looking at peoples tastes the the British/irish seem more inclined towards the Clash. This is a generalisation. When I was growing up alot of my friends were either into the Jam or The Clash. It seemed to me growing up in the West Country that the Clash fans were cooler more eclectic music tasted were as the Jam fans were more insular the sort of people who left school to go in the Army.HAving said that I loved both and could appreciate qualities in both. Actually both were earnest, but that's not a crime, the Clash were full of contradictions but were fan orientated, mingling with the fans post gig signing autographs etc. I think the pistols broke the mould and changed the way music was going. In America form what Randy has said the beer drinking crew were in to the Clash-but not in the UK.The Clash got alot of people in to Reggae/Ska dub etc they were more adventurous though a little self indulgent. As for Oasis the first LP caused a ripple and is OK but for me at that time it was PULP |

Jeez, what a dimbulb! I did not recognize "Little Keith" as Hardin until this morning. I forgot the "manosludge" moniker but was wondering "who is this person with this awesome post number?" Jerry, my comments that I've made before about the Clash were just meant to be rude insults. The focus was "imported" rather than beer. What I meant was that yuppies listened to the Clash. I never saw the Pistols live. I wish I did because any band of that sort that would play in little venues in the old South and Texas had to have real balls, shitty bassist or not. I just came back from a brief stay in Lawton, Oklahoma where the restaurant menus had "freedom fries" and they beat up a 19 year old black kid for delivering pizza. Imagine Lydon doing his Johnny Rotten routine to that sort of crowd. |

Yes Randy, LK R I. The Little Keith handle was a semi-humorous, probably misguided attempt to gain fresh perspective (LK, btw, is a character from the Martin Amis novel, "Dead Babies"). Jerry, I, too, was slagging the Clash a bit to make a point and play along with Kev's devilish game (evil because many of the pairings force one to choose between two loves - it is a trivia version of Sophie's choice)...Actually, I really love the Clash (particularly those dub/reggae influences you mention). Though I think the SPs were "artists" (whatever that means) of a higher magnitude, I'm much more likely to listen to the Clash for pleasure. LC is a particular favorite - it is good, unlike so many double albums, all the way through... I was actually living in one of the towns in the old South the Pistols played, Baton Rouge (in the misguided belief that it was an industrial town...this gave it far too much credit, as BR was far too peckerwood and disorganized for that. The economy was perhaps a few notches above the "hunter-gatherer" stage), but for whatever reason, missed them. I understand they were given quite a chilly reception, to say the least...Ah bugger, it sucks to have missed that, as I think it was a real piece of history..Ah well, consign it to the scrap heap, the graveyard, of great gigs I've missed...At least I saw Tito Puente at the N.O. Jazz Fest! |

Hey, Jerry, this American far prefers the Clash to the Pistols! Mind you, the Pistols were great and I'll never forget the first time I heard them on the radio in San Francisco back in '77 or whenever. But the Clash was a band to love and care about. The Pistols were one-dimensional and left themselves nowhere to go with their music and attitude. It was one album and out for them, which was a perfect statement really. And maximum points to Rotten for being smart enough to know that (too bad he didn't do the same with PiL after Metal Box). The Clash dragged on a little too long, admittedly, and Mick Jones fell prey to "rock star" disease, but they inspired passion in their fans that few other bands ever have. And Joe Strummer will always be one of true great guys and heroes of rock. |
