I was playing Morrissey's Vauxhall and I today. Firstly, its probably one of the best record's I have ever heard, secondly, it strikes me as being 'very English'. Does anyone share this particular opinion, or find any other bands 'very English'. in the nicest possible sense of course... |

The Kinks always come to mind, as far as Englishness goes, particularly 'Village Green' era. And the Jam. And XTC. |

All of the ones mentioned previously, plus the Streets, Pulp, Blur, Arctic Monkeys, Billy Bragg (at least when not in Americana mode), and Luke Haines in his various guises. For us hapless Yanks, subtitles are sometimes required. |

There's a guy, er bloke, Martin Newell, who's done some things with Andy Partridge, including a disc actually called "The Greatest Living Englishman" who seems so English-centric, this poor Yank despairs of ever knowing what he's going on about...On the other hand, the music is quite tasty. |

Hardin - yeah, Newell is great *and* English in the extreme. "The Greatest Living Englishman" has got some stellar pop tunes. A bit XTC-ish too. Here are a few more: The Move Slade The Passage |

Much of the mighty Squeeze's repertoire seems very Anglo-centric, particularly the song, "Cool for Cats". |
