I've got it on an Uncut Magazine cover CD (in 2003)which ran a cd of Springsteen covers, the CD also had a Badly Drawn Boy cover of Thunder Road which was good,the rest as I remember were not up to much.I don't think I still have it but uploaded the Grant one onto the computer.On Itunes it actually is credited to Grand McLennan. | ||

Horsebreaker Star in my mind is absolutely wonderful. I still play it and everytime I do it sounds new. I keep thinking about the line "Read about your death in the paper" about how poignent that now is. I think its catchy in a typical Grant lyrics way, and I love the Americana feel, before Alt country I must add, but not before Uncle Tupelo. The quality of the whole 2 CD's is really up there with the best of em. I'd definately recommend it to everyone. That album and Robert's Danger in the past are truly great. | ||

I agree Spence. I consider "Horsebreaker Star" to be Grant's personal high-water mark. But we all have different responses. If I remember right, Jeff Whiteaker is no fan of HS. "Fingers" comes from "Fireboy." I'm not personally a big fan of it. The broken heart song on that album which really clenches it for me is "Dark Side of Town;" I overlook the bad "l.o.v.e" line. | ||

A song of Grant's that I have rediscovered recently is 'The Man Who Died In Rapture' (b side of 'When Word Gets Around' I think). Deserves to be better known I feel: simply stunning. Too much 'rocking out' on 'Horsebreaker Star' for me I'm afraid. Would have made a great single CD. | ||

Andrew, that's what I liked about Star was the rock out, but then you had a turn of corner into wee fiddle driven ditties. As a whole the songs are driven, they have that striped sunlight sound! Wheras Forsters solos didnt until the second onwards, if ever. Dont get me wrong i love roberts solos, apart from the last one. | ||

Have to disagree Spence...the 'rocking out' ones strike me as going completely against the qualities of Grant's songwriting and singing that I like. HS just doesn't sound coherent as an album to me. And I certainly seem to be in a minority of people that adore 'Warm Nights'! | ||

Try editing HS down ruthlessly to a 10 track single CD, we'll all have our faves but it makes a great CD. Go further,if brave enough I would like to pick 5 GM solo songs and 5 RF solo songs each and call it a "missing GB's CD" and even have the temerity to give it a "LL" title. Sadly (surely I'm not alone here) I used to make compilation tapes with each missing Go-Betweens record every time there were two solo albums: i.e. 1 : Danger in the Past & Watershed 2 : Calling from a Country Phone & Fireboy 3 : I had a New York Girlfriend & Horsebreaker Star 4 : Warm Nights & In Your Bright Ray You can make four great albums, though number 3 is a bit light on the RF front. | ||

Ok, I'll join up for this. Firstly let me say that I think Roberts solo output is way, way better than Grants, one important reason being that Robert only released songs that he felt were worthy enough to be on Go - Betweens albums, where Grant seemed to fall into that 90s trap of "hey you can get 70 minutes on these new shiney CDs, lets fill the sucker up". So I still have all Roberts albums but sold all Grants, except Watershed which I couldnt get rid of. So, to tie in with Duncans pairings that means Danger in the Past & Watershed. As per Duncans comments about I had a New York Girlfriend & Horsebreaker Star being light on RF content, the same applies in reverse here for me. I toyed with the idea of making this imaginary album all of Danger in the past, with just Havent I Been a Fool from Watershed coming between tracks 4 and 5 of Danger In The Past. But that might be seen as disrespectful, and also a waste of time because it would to all intents and purposes really just be Danger In The Past with a guest song from Grant. so my tracklisting, with a 7/3 split is Baby Stones Havent I been a Fool The River People Leave Here Satisfied Stones For You Heart Out To Tender Dear Black Dream Danger In The Past Ive Been Looking For Somebody Black Mule Justice | ||

Leave Here Satisfied should of been the pre soundtrack to England FC's wasted World Cup trip. I suppose the thing about Roberts fantastic and well written album Danger in the past is that it has Mick Harvey at the controls, and Mr Wylder on ze skins, whom we all know and I dare say in the majority applaud. Grant's wonderful Horsebreakler Star however, had loads of unknown musicians, maybe some people can't indentify/relate with this fact. Just a thought. | ||
