Interesting Hugh. They take a minute and a quarter of your life to get to the point. Incredibly, they changed the chords pushing it from a major key song into a minor key song. That's a pretty aggressive thing to do on a cover. Really, they just snatched Robert's lyrics and attached them to a new chord progression. Not cool at all. | ||

I've always loved that Walkabouts cover of "The River People" - it does, for me, what a good cover should: it reinvents it while retaining the heart of the song. I think I prefer it to the original, and I don't think the changes hurt the original at all. I do like the band: listen to their cover of Nick Cave's "Loom of the Land" from the same album and they certainly improve that song. | ||

Randy, The track is from an album of cover versions called 'Satisfied Mind' which was released in 1993. The band formed in Seattle in 1984 and put out their first album ( See Beautiful Rattlesnake Gardens ) in 1988 or thereabouts. Their first two albums had a very strong folk-rock feel to them and, while I may be wrong, I think perhaps that was the sound / style the band were aiming for with their cover of 'The River People.' In 2001, they released another album of cover versions called 'Train Leaves At Eight.' This one had the theme of a musical tour of Europe with songs by Mikis Theodorakis, Goran Bregovic / Scott Walker, Jacques Brel, Dominique A., Stina Nordenstam and Neu! I purchased the first few titles the group released on vinyl directly from them back in the late 1980s. Received a lovely letter from Chris Eckman with the package and have had a soft spot for the band ever since. As you know, I am not a musician so I don't really understand why changing the chords and pushing it from a major key song into a minor key song was an agressive thing to do. Interesting they picked up on de André, possibly, together with Battisti, Italy's greatest singer-songwriter, although, unlike Battisti, usually his own lyricist. This is the only example I know of de André's work translated. There's not much you can do about replacing the Italian's uniquely beautiful voice, and they slow the whole thing down too much, but kudos all the same. Glad I checked this thread. I agree with Matsrep and Burgers. "Was There Anything I Could Do" is one of the very few Go-Betweens songs I don't even keep on my iPod. It's still the same uninteresting three chord sequence of course but the nice thing about this version is that Grant's lyrics are put in front which is where they need to be, as they are what makes this a Go-Betweens song.
