Hi altogether, just read, that there might be a new Chills Record in the near future. This is testament to the physical persistence of Chills founder and centrifugal force Martin Phillipps, but also his kaleidoscopic, obsessive and idiosyncratic nature. For no other Flying Nun associate had such gumption to reach out overseas, nor was beset by both simple and turbulent twists of fate. Which meant no one could keep up with Phillipps’ wayward path - hence The Chills’ now infamously documented personnel changes (there are over 20 line-ups to peruse if you choose). Like his fellow Flying Nun bedfellow Peter Gutteridge, Martin Phillips is enjoying something of a renaissance, with a new single resonating the same frequencies as his heavenly pop hits from the 80s and 90s. I read, that the new Chills Album will be out in may 2015. Theres a delay, because of the Vinyl production (in usa, i think). In 2015, the verlaines will release a new album too and i heard the rumour, that the Sneaky Feelings.. maybe.. will record something new. They were one of my fave bands from NZ and the Bannister/Pine constellation always reminded me of Forster/McLennan. Great Band. I put some money in a Tape-Release,...btw.. Hugh/Rob, thanks for posting that. Great version of Pink Frost, very much an attempt to catch the feel of the original. And good news re the album - the Chills are one of my all-time favourite bands, who I first saw in the mid-80s at Glastonbury (got the - analog - pics somewhere!), then twice during the Sunburnt UK tour and then last year. | ||

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion about this record around these parts. Maybe it's because, as Randy mentioned elsewhere, it takes a few (or more) listens to kick in. For weeks now, it's been a staple on my commute to and from work, and I think it's a damn fine effort, up there with some of their best work (excepting the untouchable, perfect "Submarine Bells"). Even the tunes I thought were weak on first listen grow in texture and complexity the more I listen to them. If "Silver Bullets" has been holding you at arms length, my advice is sit with it awhile. There's magic in there. | ||

What I remember saying is that Silver Bullets seems like Martin's return to Brave Words sonically, only this time much much better. (I'd still put his vocals further forward.) I agree that this is an album which takes time to arrive. In fact I felt like it made a new arrival for me when I sat down and listened to it last night. One of the beautiful side effects of listening to vinyl on a manual table is that you're going to have to pick up the tone arm in 20 minutes so you can't really wander around doing much in the way of chores. So, sit down dammit! I actually hear the record. Last night Side One in particular really impressed me. "Underwater Wasteland" was that night's standout. I suspect the evening's star will be different on different nights. An album that takes a while to soak in is a very very good thing. But I still can't get over how much of a bona fide Chills album this is with its Brave Words-ish swirling arrangements and the great little Chills miniature "Liquid Situation" almost as if we've been given another radio jingle. For me "Soft Bomb" wandered too far off the path. It was far too much a product of Los Angeles. Van Dyke Parks and Peter Holsapple are great musicians but not on a Chills album. We all know what happened with "Sunburst." I personally like it much better because it's not as slick and "professional" as "Soft Bomb." I'm sure my guitarist bias plays a large role in that opinion. As I think I have said previously, "Stand By" sounds like a good bar band with a good songwriter. "Silver Bullets" is the first real Chills album since "Submarine Bells." It's been a long wait. | ||
