Think it was the exact same set at the Oxford Art Factory in Sydney tonight. It was a wonderful show. Best I've seen Robert play since the four nights in Brisbane in 2007. The highlight (of many highlights) was the Prince-like funk jam version of Danger In The Past. One of the very rare occasions Robert didn't play guitar on a song. More when I have more time. |

Padraig, it was a fantastic show in Sydney, wasn't it. Can't wait for your more detailed thoughts but a couple of comments on the set list. I don 't remember "He lives my life" - I think he instead invited the Twerps back on stage to do one of their songs with him. On "Danger In the Past", I get your Prince reference but I was thinking "l wonder what Grace Jones would do with this?" Wasn't Robert's band great? |

Posting here for the first time in a long time to add to the above that it was a terrific gig, well-performed and with great energy, in addition to some entertaining banter. The Oxford Art Factory setlist is correct except that Robert invited opening band The Twerps (who were quite good--he was also visible checking out their set) on-stage to perform one of their songs (I think it was He's In Stock) during the first encore. |

Stephen and Shane, you're right of course, the song with The Twerps replaced He Lives My Life. The Twerps would be great if I'd never heard The Feelies, Yo La Tengo or The Go-Betweens. But I have, so they're not. Robert was so comfortable with the band, it was obvious they've all spent a lot of time together in recent years recording the album. The little twists on the arrangements, such as the funk take on Danger In The Past and the countrified Too Much Of One Thing were joyful. The intro to Turn On The Rain was hilarious. I started the night cursing Robert for playing so late to a mostly middleaged audience who all had work in the morning, but ended up with a huge smile on my face. (I was damn tired at work yesterday though.) |

I'm just jealous ! Seems a shame that he won't have the band for the European tour... |

Yeah, that was a pretty hilarious intro--he was talking about how John Fogerty blew his mind by releasing Have You Ever Seen The Rain followed by Who'll Stop The Rain. The intro for Songwriters On The Run was quite droll, too. It was a bit of a late one, the set finished at 11:30 pm and then Robert hung out at the merch stand for a while afterwards to converse and sign albums for at least 15 minutes. I'm not sure how much longer he was there for, I had to catch a train so I left after briefly chatting and getting my copy of The Evangelist signed, though impressively, one couple brought along one of those 'Classic 5 albums' sets and he individually signed each album in the set. |
