Clocking in at 79 minutes, 25 seconds. I put a touch more thought into it this year than in the past, so every track is one I have rated 5/5 except for Filthy Friends, which is 4/5. It starts with choral classical (and there is a sentence I never thought I'd write), moves onto the best power pop of the year, then comes some hybrids taking in soul/funk/highlife/krautrock/electronic, then some alt-country, folk, jazz and orch pop. 1 The Binchois Consort - Power: Gloria, "Ad Thome Memoriam" 2 Case, Lang & Veirs - Best Kept Secret 3 Chuck Prophet - Bobby Fuller Died For Your Sins 4 Alex Lahey - Backpack 5 Filthy Friends - Any Kind Of Crowd 6 Walk The Moon - One Foot 7 The Moonlandingz - Lufthanza Man 8 UNKLE (Feat. Ysée, ESKA, Elliott Power, Keaton Henson, Liela Moss, Mïnk, Dhani Harrison & Steven Young) - Farewell 9 Susto - Havana Vieja 10 Piano Magic (with Peter Walsh) - Attention To Life 11 Wire - Sleep On The Wing 12 Paul Weller - She Moves With The Fayre (Villagers Remix) 13 Eleni Mandell - I Belong To Someone New 14 Inara George - Yellow Light 15 The National - Dark Side Of The Gym 16 Beck - No Distraction 17 Feist - Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye 18 Jesse Terry - Stay Low 19 Emily Barker - Over My Shoulder |

Great collection Padraig, so eclectic it could almost be a Radio Paradise playlist! loving the Moonlandingz track in particular, Piano Magic and Chuck Prophet too. |

As is typical for me I have only purchased a handful of 2017 releases so far. I find that the most worthwhile releases in a given year will most often be under the radar and I won't discover them until later. The two that rate are: 1. Ocean Party -- Beauty Point 2. Bell Divers -- Not to Come Back Ocean Party are a major find for me. They promise to remain a favorite for currently-working artists for as long as they keep going. Anglo-American band Pale Lights have a new album which I hope isn't stolen from my doorstep when it is delivered. I purchased the vinyl version and will purchase the promised limited-edition CD when it is produced early next year. The Pale Lights album will be another rare 2017 release for me. Turning to people discovered this year, my tops are: 1. Ocean Party 2. Ornella Vanoni -- Italian singer's records spanning from 1960 to 1973. After that I probably don't care, though I will check to be sure of that. Original inspiration Stuart. 3. Asylum Party -- 1980s French post-punk band. Thank you Hugh. 4. Lost Tapes -- Spanish indiepop group. I didn't learn of their 2016 album until this year. Plus they have an excellent compilation of their earlier singles and EP's. 5. Doggy -- a very big thank you to Hugh 6. Animals That Swim. Thank you Padraig. But I still don't think "Faded Glamour" comes anywhere near "Streets of Your Town." 7. Trembling Blue Stars. I still have a lot of their work to pick up. 8. La Femme. Not high art but entertaining. 9. Allo Darlin. Also not high art but a pleasant intersection of Oz and hipster east London culture. and last but not least, I have become VERY fond of: 10. Television Personalities, specifically their early pre-reformation recordings. They were a name that buzzed around me for decades but I never got around to actually listening to them until early this year. I have become quite attached to their whimsy. A number like "Salvador Dali's Garden Party" can be counted upon to cheer me up on a dreary day in Trump's Amerika. As Hugh knows I am resisting downloads as my music delivery mode but there is an expanding crowd of people who only release their music that way. The stand out group from that source is another Australian outfit, Cool Sounds. Sadly, they have only released on album on CD and it is unquestionably their weakest offering. Sigh. It's looking like another good era for Australian music. |

Since I'm obliged to do a top-10 list every year, I figured I'd share this year's edition if anyone's interested. Two Australian bands, which might be a first, unless there was a year someone I can't remember snuck on with the Go-Betweens. Anyhow: 1. Jay-Z - “4:44” 2. Hamell On Trial - “Tacklebox” 3. Rolling Blackouts Costal Fever - “Talk Tight” (EP) 4. The New Pornographers - “Whiteout Conditions” 5. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - “The Nashville Sound” 6. Jens Lekman - “Life Will See You Now” 7. Alex Lahey - “Love You Like A Brother” 8. Blondie - “Pollinator" 9. Khalid - “American Teen" 10. Arto Lindsay - “Cuidado Madame” |

We all care, Rob. That's why we're here. I'm with you on the ones I have: Rolling Blackouts Costal Fever, The New Pornographers and Alex Lahey. I must check out some of the others, particularly Hamell On Trial, who I used to really like a lot and have seen live both in Austin and Dublin. |

I'm always a little shy about these list things, Padraig, even was when I used to write about music. Maybe because I heard about 40 or 50 records I liked this year, so trimming seems capricious, as does putting these 10 in this particular order. I'm kvetching. Basically, these are the 10 albums I listened to the most this year, and got the biggest kick out of. The Hamell's terrific, maybe my favorite of his. If he's your thing, I highly recommend it. |
