Hi - long time since I posted on here - hope I’m ok to come back! Well what did we think of that? Great set list some real surprises like Twin Layers of Lightning and Finding You (sob). The big but though was the choice of venue, Robert May have wanted to play the Union Chapel for 20 years - I think I would be happy if he left it another 20 before playing there again. I started off upstairs, the sound was like watching a pub band at a youth club disco - just terrible. We quickly decamped downstairs where it was much better - I offered some polite feedback to the lighting guy who got in a real huff about it! Found ourselves some seats near the front and settled in to enjoy the rest of the set. Some great moments but I just don’t think these echoey venues suit this kind of band - maybe an acoustic set would have been better. After the sheer joy of the Lexington last year this was relatively disappointing- not helped by an audience who seemed to think they were ina church service. Good but low down on my list of seeing Robert gigs - I hope others enjoyed it more! |

(Good to see you back C Gull!) Sounds like a similar set to Bristol the following night, finishing with the Clarke Sisters, Don't Let Him Come Back and Surfing Magazines. The Fleece wasn't full but the sound was excellent and Robert and the band genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves. He said it was the most enjoyable gig of the tour, though he would say that of course! A lovely night, 90 minutes of musical excellence, I got him to sign a gig poster, the Inferno CD, original Spring Hill Fair and Send Me a Lullaby LPs (both with £7.49 price stickers!) and a Tallulah sampler - not for sale - LP. I could have taken dozens along but thought I'd best limit myself. |
