There is a Southern literary mag called "Oxford American" that, even though it's owned by legal potboiler author John Grisham, still contains some great writing. Every year they put out a Southern Music issue, that comes with a CD, and it's always fantastic. The actual magazine serves as the beautifully annotated, completely absorbing, liner notes for the disc, with many lengthy articles about the artists concerned. This year's, which just came out, is no exception. It's just super, and contains such unlikely artists as Sun Ra, Big Star and the 6ths, as well as such likely ones as Townes Van Zandt and Sam Cooke. It is more fun than humans should be allowed to have to listen to the disc whilst reading the fascinating pieces about the artists. Hopefully, youse guys overseas who're interested in it can find it. |

I picked a previous copy of their annual southern music special (2000 I think, though I got it in Austin, TX in March 2001) and it was indeed a great disc and magazine. |

I've never seen it here Hardin, but I'll check out Borders. They are the best at stocking such mags, though Australian newsagents in genaral are actually very good at stocking a wide variety of interesting publications. |
