Stuart I purchased his third album and remember being disappointed because it wasn't as Dylanesque (or a person might say Ray Davies-esque on the strength of "England Is Unwell.") I should play it again and see what I think now. I also remember liking his EP "Self Portrait In Sound" much better. The EP preceded the album. I downloaded it from Bandcamp. I should give that another listen as well. I was wondering if he'd produced other stuff since his first two albums but not getting anywhere near his name - Mumble Appleberry? Nope - couldn't check. After Hugh's help, I listened to some of the last album but wasn't very enthusiastic, seemed a less inspired retread of what had gone before. I read an interview where he talks of his love for the Kinks! He listened to them growing up, which makes me wonder what kind of family he was fostered out to. Some weird details about how an American label, rather than take him on, had created "their own Salami", copying his name (initials and syllables), image and style. Who could that be? I hope his striking talent finds its path. | ||

I listened to the third album yesterday, to refresh my recollection. It just didn't seem like he was ready with enough material. And it was odd to redo "Age of Glass" but not include the stronger numbers from the EP that wasn't released on a physical format. His childhood spent in Kent seems to have been a massive influence on him. One of my favorite things is when a person creates music different than is what is expected. If he'd simply grown up in South London, he might have done grime. I can readily imagine that he's been accused for lacking "authenticity" whereas I'd say he exhibits the most authenticity. He pursued the musical path that inspired him as a youth. Your story about the American label sounds gross. Sure, "create" your own copy of somebody who already exists. |
