I found an old article from mtv.com, dated June 21, 2000, that said Elliott Smith, Sleater-Kinney, Quasi, and Steve Malkmus are all helping out on the new Go-Betweens album. Another article said Steve Malkmus lent some equipment and Elliott Smith wanted to play keyboards on it. It is not surprising since Elliott Smith was a silent partner in Jackpot! Studios, Portland at the time where they recorded The Friends of Rachel Worth. I have a fondness for the CD since it was the first Go-Betweens after a long gap, and it is also my favorite one of the Act II version of the band. Like the music nerd I am, I emailed Larry Crane, owner of Jackpot! Studios, and he replied that Sam Coomes of Quasi played all the keyboards on the CD. Oh, well. In a published interview, Larry Crane said that one night after recording, the Go-Betweens and Elliott Smith went to a place called Chopsticks to do karaoke. Elliott Smith apparently loved karaoke and that night Grant sang a perfect “Daydream Believer” sitting on a stool without looking at the prompter at all. What I would have given to have been there in the room that night. In 2005, before the Abbey Pub - Chicago concert, Grant and the entourage were sitting at the table next to us in the balcony and I wish I said something to him now. Grant with his glass of red wine was sitting directly behind me and everyone at the table having a good conversation, so I hated to bother him. The Go-Betweens ended the concert with "Cattle & Cane" and Grant rising one hand up to touch the overhead speaker at the side of the stage and mic in the other and sang the words “further, longer, higher, older” with a touch of weariness. | ||

Thanks for posting this, Fred. It reminded me of hearing about Grant doing karaoke in a bar across the road from a venue Forster & McLennan played in Dublin in about 2000. The bar was, and still is, called The Clock. |
