One more bad one for ya, Spence (don't you work in graphics, or sumthin arty like that?)...John Mayer, who really IS the anti-Christ, has a new album coming out called, "Continuum"...it has what I believe is an absurdly unappealing and amateurishly designed cover for an artist with such big bucks (if not talent)...I'm sure you'll see it popping up someplace soon... |

Yeah LK I am a designer, anything goes now, shit sells. I'll take a look out for JM though! The few I have picked, like a lot of things in my life right now hark back to being young. In the olden days, before techno, techno, techno, you may have hgeard a promo or pre release on the daio of a single from a forhcoming album. But in the main the first thig you sould see would be the sleeve on and advert or in the rack the day you buy. The ecitement and pleasure in purchasing said item was unbelievable and to this day, I remember fondly being excited when buying evryone of those albums and that has stuck with me I guess. Apart from OJ my Mum bought me that for Christmas!! It was hard to find too! Kurt. Marquee Moon is great isn't it! That sort of colour xeroxed imagery. Talking Heads too, they were the real deal alll the way through, from music to the cover. Another LP sleeve for m is Josef K's Only Fun in Town. (It had to be), but I really really like it, the gold on black, this European style of line drawing, its of Princes Street Edinburgh. The inner sleeve was a collage of JK related imagery. Some of which are on my cork board right now!! But that inner sleeve imagery I associate with the music now. Its the imagery that makes it all the more evocative. Its all black and whoite, I swear that all New Wave was in monchrome and we all lived in black and whote for a couple of years, really!! |

Forever Changes - Love I love the artwork/design on the Elektra label ( Jac Holzman era ) in general and that by William S. Harvey in particular. |

Born Sandy Devotional - The Triffids The 1960's ariel shot of the western Australian coastline perfectly matches the music inside. Priest=Aura - The Church I love the dog and the pyramid and siver, gray and black color scheme. Or maybe it's because I have been playing it a lot these days!! "They kill their enemies by loving them to death". It's a lesson the world's leaders should all subscribe to. The Gilded Palace of Sin - The Flying Burrito Brothers. I think this is one of the great covers of all time. |

I love the Rain Dogs sleeve, Jerr. It's in a tie with Swordfishtrombones for favorite Tom Waits cover...Supposedly that isn't Tom on the cover of RD, though it is a dead ringer. It's said to be a Dutch sailor, cavorting with a prostitute... Thought of some more... I left out Elvis Costello. For him, it'd be a tie between King of America and Get Happy!! the Kinks - Schoolboys in Disgrace. Too bad the album didn't match its cover, in terms of quality or interest. Al Green - I'm Still In Love With You. Most of the time, I can barely match my socks to my shirt. Here, natty Al manages to coordinate his ensemble with the whole ROOM! He is the uber mack daddy. Richard Thompson - Rumour & Sigh This thread reminds me, that even with the advent and increasing primacy of downloading, cover art's an intrinsic part of the experience for many music lovers. In David Byrne's excellent blog, he had a piece a few months ago that took the opposing argument - that the cover wasn't really that important and that, since in most cases it wasn't even picked out by the artist, had no real relevance. Interesting piece, even if he's full of ca ca on that one. If I can find the link, I'll post it. |

But can we pretty much agree that covers have mostly sucked since we moved from the vinyl era to CDs? Not very many we've listed come from the post-vinyl era. |

I would definitely agree, Kurt. Something has definitely been lost. There is still tons of vinyl around, but some on this board may not remember what a thrill that was to get a new LP and marvel at the creativity that just seemed to flow endlessly, when the whole cover art thing was at its zenith..I'm not sure, but it looks like most of the picks from above date from the pre-CD era... |

Agree Kurt, but it might also be that we're (mostly) an older bunch on here. So we're not likely to list Razorlight, Keane, Coldplay, Green Day, The Kooks etc etc who are all from the post vinyl era |

Andreas is right--I probably never give the time of day to album covers by artists I don't like or am indifferent to. But in the spirit of being more generous, I'll add Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" to the great covers list. |

Kurt yeah that flloyd cover always mistifed me as a kid and now, its cool beacuse there was nothing like it, on the other hand its also the worst cover in the world, an absoluts pile of shit, it looks like a crappy still from a bad American gore fil or something by Romero. Andras the cover to Surfs Up was and still is beautiful. Its hard to make out what it was exactly on the album sleev let alone the cd. Its sleeve is beautiful like the album is.That album was a real influence on me, I could shed a tear or two to some of those tracks. For rocking up the vibe I love nae adore Sunflower, crap sleeve. |

In this video, some of the classic (or at least, well-known) album covers "do battle"...this is very funny and clever, but be careful with it, as parts are a little violent and/or sexually suggestive (have your interest now?): http://youtube.com/watch?v=sqZNog4h7j8 |

Here's hoping they do a hipper, indie version using the cover of 16 LL...they could pull that towel, or whatever it is, off of Lindy, and make her spin like a dervish! |

Or how about the cover of TFORW, with bullets shooting out of the gun on the shirt Grant is wearing? |
