I went to this yesterday and thought it was brilliant. The story is great and the performances from everyone are outstanding. It got Boston - from the Capitol building to Southy to Downtown Crossing - right, which was very important. OK, Ray Winstones's Boston Irish accent was a bit ropey (he just did a generic US accent) and David O'Hara is Scottish, not Irish, but overall it portrayed the Boston Irish experience very accurately. Anyone else see it yet? I can recommend it if you have not. |

Not saw it yet Padraig, but have noticed it has been getting very positive reviews. Anything that has Ray Winstone in it is usually worth a look, he seems like a great bloke in real life too. I must get to Boston one day. |

Padraig, I don't know if you are aware but The Departed is based on the superb Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs starring Andy Lau and Tony Leung which was released back in 2002. I have yet to see The Departed but have read several reviews which state that, although a remake, it is a very good film which recreates and re-imagines the original as opposed to just copying it so it might be worth checking out Infernal Affairs if you have not already seen it. A further two films were made ( Infernal Affairs II and Infernal Affairs III ) creating a trilogy a la The Godfather but the first film is, in my opinion, by far the best of the three. |

I did know it was a remake of Internal Affairs Hugh but have not seen the original. I will check it out. I used to really like Hong Kong gangster/cop flicks in the early 90s. Jack Nicholson's character is obviously based on Boston gangster Whitey Bolger though. His brother Billy used to be chancellor of the University of Massachusetts! |
