This is a blatant plug... but I feel I've earned it after 700+ posts! If you are curious as to what my voice sounds like - as I'm sure you all are (I would insert a smiley face here if I knew how to!) - I will be on NewsTalk tonight (11.40pm ish Irish/UK time, 12.40am central Europe, 4.40pm US west coast, 8.40am Sydney) talking about Australian issues (not music). I was on at the same time last week too. The reason I have given times other than the time in Ireland is that if you are really keen you can listen live by going to www.newstalk.ie and clicking on Listen to newstalk button at the top. In Ireland you can listen on 106 in Dublin and somewhere between 107/108 in the rest of the Republic. I think all the regular Irish-based users of this board are in Dublin though. However, seeing as I am on close to midnight Irish time and at the end of the working day in the US / start of working day in Australia, I won't be offended if no-one here tunes in! | ||

Jerry, I have no time for the Wolfe Tones. Their knee-jerk anti-English bullshit is disgusting and embarrassing to me. I don't know much about the Dublin City Ramblers. I like some of the Dubliners music (my aunt has worked with them for years), but Irish trad music doesn't get much of a look in in my house. The type that blames the entire ills of the universe on the English gets no look in. BTW, I just realised that I gave those of you in the US a bum steer when I said I was on radio at 4.40pm US west coast time. It's actually 3.40 US west coast time. Sorry, pretty dumb of me to do that when the whole point was to get some of you to listen! Anyway, I should be on again next Wednesday - 11.40pm ish Irish/UK time, 12.40am (Thursday) central Europe, 3.40pm US west coast, 10.40am (Thursday) Sydney (two hours later than before due to daylight savings time coming in in NSW and out in Ireland/UK/US. I specified NSW because Queensland, Nothern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia don't have daylight savings!). Those outside Ireland can listen at www.newstalk.ie. In Ireland it's 106 in Dublin and 107/108 in the rest of the Republic. All of this relentless self-promotion and not a single person on this board has yet listened! Hmm, thats weird - I thought I had answered Jerrys question about The Wolfe Tones and Dublin City Ramblers on the day he asked the question. Given that this could be seen as a political subject maybe my reply has been pulled, although more to the point maybe I forgot to hit "post message". In summary, I used to like the Wolfe Tones when I was more politically minded in my youth, this coincidentally was before they turned into a cabaret act. Ditto Dublin City Ramblers. Dont want to get all political on here but I suspect Padraig and I would have a pretty interesting discussion on Anglo Irish politics if we ever have a pint together in Sydney. | ||

The Wolfe Tones are a joke these days and their crowd are a pretty tough bunch. There was an incident years ago at a gig in Waterford in the south east of Ireland where some people unfurled a flag of the 9 county Ulster (not Northern Ireland) and the morons at the gig mistook its meaning and beat them up. The Dubliners with Luke Kelly were great. Has anyone ever heard of Dessie O'Halloran from Inis Bofin, very funny mix of kinda Cajun/Irish Trad? | ||

It's Raining Men, My Rose Has Left Me & It's Like That are Mulligan & O'Hare classics. Whenever Wolfe Tones play Kilburn National it's like Celtic are playing at Wembley. Let's have that discussion Kevin! I drank an 800mil bottle of 6% proof Guinness last night while listening to The God Machine on headphones and reading The Australian. The Guinness tasted like heaven's sweetest nectar. Oh, and we'd been to Lakemba (the heart of Sydney's Muslim community) for a great Lebabanese meal earlier. So a cultural day all in all! (Well, middle eastern food and Irish liquer!). |
