Would like everyones advice. I am going away on hols to France in next few days, and as usual will get a pile of CDs to listen to. What to people recommend. Will take the Ipod with all the favourites but fancy something new to listen to(either new release or old)I thought about Camera Obscura and Sonic Youth (not really got into them before). What do people think?? Jerry, Jimmy Little's "Messenger" has me under its spell right now. It's not new (ca. 1999) but it's timeless. I predict that I will love it when a lot of other things I listen to now have passed from favor. |

Do you know where you are actually going in France, Jerry? If you can make it to Les Gorges du Tarn it is quite stunning. But then a lot of the country is, which is why traditionally the French haven't travelled far for their holidays! As for music, personally I would go for nothing but Brel et Brassens... |

I'm going to Nice in a few weeks Andrew. Is Les Gorges du Tarn in that vicinity? |

Kevin, In answer to your above question...sadly no! Look for Millau on a map...north of Montpellier. http://www.ot-gorgesdutarn.com/ |

i am back from the seaside and a lot of interesting music waits to be discovered. maybe some of you could be interested in vivian linden's album 'watch the light fade'. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=134747 81 http://www.vivianlinden.com/ sounds great. mazzy star comes to my mind. another maid: josephine foster. didn't noticed her until now. but she is worth to listen. sounds strange. reminds me of shirley collins. http://www.myspace.com/josephinefoster |

Andreas, I've been listening to James yorkston's new album - Year of the Leopard. I mentioned it on another thread a few weeks ago. It's good - much better than the last one, which I didn't like at all, but not quite as good as his first. If you order direct from Domino, you get a bonus CD with acoustic versions of the songs - I find I've been listening to the acoustic versions more than the new album |

cichli, thanks for your reply. the critics were complaisant i listened to the snippets, but i couldn't really find an argument to buy it. the listening of snippets bears often the danger to overlook albums whose beauty only unfolds by listening of the whole album. and surely some albums need a few plays until it hit s the heart and soul. but whom i telling that. |

Yes, I agree with you. Year of the Leopard is a real slow burner and song snippets won't do it any justice. It passed me by on the first listen a few weeks ago, but I like it now alot. It's a late night /rainy weekend record. |

My Bachman ancestors came over from Alsace to the US in the early 1870's according to my grandfather. I would love to visit France one of these days! |
