Ive not been to a gig since the Twilight Singers on the 7th July. And if you think thats fairly recent, just remember that was two days before the World Cup Final - bloody ages ago. So I've got withdrwal symptoms and the bad thing is there is nothing in the pipeline. No doubt I will end up going to about 4 gigs in November, but until then make me jealous and tell me who you have saw recently. | ||

I have not been at a gig since Amadou And Mariam in April or May. The only other gig I saw this year was The Go-Betweens in January. I'm going to see U2 twice in November though, in Sydney and Melbourne. I have not seen them live since 1987! The only bad note about it is that both concerts are on on days Sydney FC are playing at home. I'm giving a mate my season ticket for those two games. | ||

I watched the killers at a 'secret' gig in London on Monday, it was very good, and was filmed for channel 4 (in the UK). They mixed the new album (which isn't out yet) and quite a few off hot fuss. On Sunday I'm off to see Peter, Bjorn and John in Liverpool (after a trip to Hull to see Widnes beat Hull KR!!!). Cheers Jon | ||

I remember seeing the Killers being interviewed at some Brits award party - they looked stone cold sober but between the 4 of them they could hardly string a sentence together. very sullen and moody bunch, at least they were that night. the last gig i visited was in may. motorpsycho played. a nearly three hour concert. motorpsycho: the eclectical band par excellence, they absorped everything what is/was good in rock music history (even country/country rock music - sometimes they play these kind of music in a sep. band called the international tussler society), but out of it they created there own. and so was the show. pure energy. magic moments. overwhelming. | ||

I wemt on a Stag do about a year ago to Bournemouth and met up with a few old good friends I've not seen before,things as they do turned to music and decided to ask some of the younger people in the bars what were their favourite LPs/CDs. They were good at Live8 but only played one song. In some strange twist of fate Velvet Revolver had 3 songs & over-ran to excess. Where's the justice. I don't know, Hot Fuss is pretty good. I saw Morrissey at Oya Festival in Oslo about a month ago. He played a full set, complete with about 5 costume changes! He did about five Smiths songs as well as a couple of his earlier solo songs but the bulk was from the latest album. Definitely worth going to see. Even he is still miserable and grumpy. Speaking of miserable and grumpy, The Fall also played Oya. Mark E Smith had two mics which he managed to tangle up so badly, he threw them across the stage in frustration. He never looked or spoke to any of the other band members and kept wandering off stage left. Entertaining to watch but it didn't make me want to find out more. | ||

Thanks, Kurt. I have been reading, and enjoying, the board for a couple of years. Back to Morrissey - despite the fact that it was raining and we were exhausted after a full day of festival-going, the minute that the opening chords to 'Panic' sounded out, the whole crowd surged forward at once. And this was a very laid back Scandanavian crowd. He did get visible snarky when he asked to crowd to identify who the person on the backdrop was (Oscar Wilde). When he couldn't hear that, he started berating them, saying 'you're so provincial'! I found it amusing rather than depressing! | ||

I think I was going to talk about The Hidden Cameras. Well they played Night & Day in Manchester (Supported by a band called My Latest Novel who were very good). The Hidden Cameras blew me away, absolutely brilliant. Which was an achievement due to it being a little late (and a big weekend)! Next on the list is The Lemonheads (Thursday in Liverpool) ,New Order (next Monday in Blackpool) and Camera Obscura (next Tuesday in Manchester).....oh and Friday involves trying to get Morrissey tickets for GMEX in Manchester. Randy, I bought a dvd of a classic tv music show called the Tube. It had Stan Ridgway on it, a live tune, can't rmrmrber the title, boy they looked the part, the show was always great the bands were always live, with the exception of Imagination. They did Body Talk, miming big time, and talking about big, the front of the asudience are doing nothing but laughing and p ointing at lee john's rather promienent and BIG package, clearly visible through his metallic spandex!!!!!! | ||

Speaking of trips, I am in the early stages of planning our family holiday to Australia next summer. Padraig, do you have any tips on who to fly with? We do not need accomodation as we will be staying with my brother in law in Cairns, so it will be flight only. I have run a few searches online and have been quoted anything from Ł700 to Ł3000 (crikey!) per adult. Who do you normally fly with if you go back home and what do you think is an acceptable price? Do not want to skimp on price versus comfort given the length of the flight, but was hoping to do it for approx Ł1000 per adult and Ł750 per child - is that possible do you think? | ||

Kevin, I flew Cathay Pacific last time and they were fine. I think BA are really good too. I would not recommend Qantas though. I had a bad experience travelling with my family with them three years ago. It is worth paying a little extra for BA or Cathay Pacific rather than getting a cheaper deal with Garuda or somesuch. I think you should be able to get it within that budget, but it might be a few hundred more in total. I know it's cheaper to fly from the UK down to here than the other way round. Why that it I don't know. It makes no sense to me. Will you be in Sydney at all? I'd love to catch up if you are. | ||

Cairns will be hot, probably high 20s, maybe low 30s. It doesn't get cold there. Sydney could be cold and it could be wet. Not cold like Scotland in December/January, but it could be as low as 3-5 degrees at night. Bring soms warm clothes and coats. | ||

We went to see Dan Kelly and The Alpha Males at The Annandale last night. Overall, a good not great gig. But there was one moment of brilliance - their awesome rendition of Drunk On Election Night with spot-on soprano vocal harmonies on the "Cocksucker, motherflipper*" chorus. My first gig since April or May. I really ought to get out more. * The word used isn't really motherflipper. But you can probably guess what it really is! Right - Here's the last few gigs I've been to. The Lemonheads (12/10/06) Liverpool Carling Academy Very impressed, a great mix of the old and new, and a brilliant acoustic 'sing-along' of about 6 tracks. Support was from 747's who sound interesting, might be worth more of a look. New Order (16/10/06) Blackpool Empress Ballroom Always fighting (In my mind) for my favourate band. Excellent set including Temptation, Perfect Kiss, Blue Monday, Ceremony and a few Joy Division numbers (Including Love Will Tear Us Apart). Support came from Section 25, who I didn't think too much of. Camera Obscura (17/10/06) Manchester Jabez Clegg Another excellent show from CO, playing more of the new album plus some older songs. A funny venue wider than long, but decent enough. Support from The Tiny, who made me smile, but for all the wrong reasons. Nothing until the end of next week, when its Badly Drawn Boy in Sheffield. Right I've seen the Hidden Cameras.....but only musically thankfully - I think the review is somewhere above, but they were really good. Camera Obscura are from Scotland, and a little bit twee (a Belle & Sebastian reference, but that would be too easy). They play quite layered indie-pop songs - They're on MySpace if anyone's interested. New Order were brilliant, even making a trip to Blackpool appear worthwhile! I did see Section 25, but didn't think too much of them, maybe I'm a little young (!!!!), so I didn't know too much about them, except they were on Factory! I've not got the BDB album yet, its on order and I'm waiting for the postie to do another fine job delivering a ruck of albums! Saw Yo La Tengo last night in Hollywood, Ca. They were great, though the overall experience was possibly marred by too many overlong, feedback squall jams. They actually did "The Story of Yo La Tango" and "Blue Line Swinger" back to back - too much of one thing. On the other hand, there was a transcendent version of the raga-rific "Pass the Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind", in which Ira actually played his guitar rather than abuse it, sublime, beautiful versions of "Pablo & Andrea", "Our Way To Fall" and "Feel Like Going Home" and an encore of "You Can Have It All" in which every band member played a percussion instrument. It wouldn't be a YLT show without covers, and those were last night, "Can't Seem To Make You Mine" and Dylan's "I Want To Be Your Lover". All in all, a great, epic show. I saw Ira and Georgia earlier in the day walking down Hollywood Blvd. Indie icons that they are and, just generally speaking, salt of the earth people, they looked a little out of place in the completely cliched, but also accurate, glitz and decadence that is Hollywood. | ||

Have to say: I really enjoyed it and someday soon I hope to have my hearing back. And, if I don't, big deal. How hard can signing and lip reading be? Forgot to mention - I did call out to them, something banal like, "Hey, we're coming to see your show!" I don't know if they're innately shy or skittish or what, but they looked shocked that someone had spoken to them, but quickly recovered and smiled and waved. Maybe they were shell shocked from all the craziness on H'Wood Blvd. It's a zoo at the best of times but yesterday it was particularly wild. They were having the premiere of the Borat movie at Graumann's Chinese Theater (the famous place with all the handprints of stars in the cement outside it). We thought about hanging around to get a glimpse of "the stars", but as brilliant as Sacha Baron Cohen is, he doesn't quite have the celebrity wattage to make me stand around waiting...In the space of, like 20 feet, I saw a dude decked out in full winged demon regalia and a Marilyn Monroe "lookalike"...that's in quotes because the mug on this poor woman forced me to quip that it was "Marvin Monroe", but you get the idea. Against that kind of backdrop, a sweet married couple of bohemians from New Jersey probably felt like fish out of water. You got there first, so tell me. When you hit 1,000 do lights and alarms go off? | ||

They opened with it. Georgia and James, on a smaller drum kit, set up a jungly beat, and Ira played organ and sang. He fiddled around with the organ settings for eons, to the point where you wondered whether he was going to sing, then let out this hellacious, blood curdling "Alright!" that almost literally shook people out of their seats. But it was a great version of it. The whole thing was, to me, surprisingly rockist, for such an indie group - but who cares? It was majorly entertaining. Ira seems to have gotten most of his stage moves from watching the footage of Jimi Hendrix at the Monterey Pop Festival (have you seen it?)...he did everthing short of playing the guitar with his teeth and setting it on fire. Come to think of it, they have the same hairdo... | ||

Thank you, kind sir. I definitely recommend seeing YLT, if you can. Just bring earplugs and drink a lot of coffee - they make for a very loud and long night, but ultimately a very rewarding one. It will be interesting to see if Midlake sound as good live as on their excellent and beautiful record. You gotta give us your review after you go, man! | ||

midlake. the concert. in a small club in the middle of my small hometown berlin. first i have to say that midlake played not alone. robert gomez and fionn regan played before them. robert gomez. i never heard of him. he played with a band and they made interesting music. i liked it, but i didn't hit me as much as the following musician did. fionn regan. this irish guy played a fantastic acoustic guitar set. excellent fingerpicking and songs that are worth to listen. folk at its best. i bought his cd. ten minutes later he arrived at the merchandise stand and signed it. i had the chance to talk to him. not only small talk and bla, bla. we had a long and nice conversation, about his tour, about the weather, about mosquitos, about ireland, about my holidays there in 1983, about a german music mag and a lot more. this guy could be at the beginning of great career. but then midlake started their set. to say it in just a few words: it wasn't as good as expected or hoped. the sound was awful. a lot of technical problems. it didn't worked very well. a connection with the concertgoers didn't happened. just when they played the familiar songs like the 'hits' roscoe and young bride it worked a litttle bit. and they worked sometimes with samplers to reconstruct the sound of the album with all the instruments. normally i am not so nit-picky but i think it didn't fit. at least to me, and at least this evening. yes, it was dissapointing. what a pity. but due to the circumstance that i acquainted fionn regan it was a nice evening - except the smoke, which -for the first time in my life- i couldn't stand. yes, it seems that i am getting old. ps: sorry, that i am not able to describe it more detailed or more colourful. you know my english is limited which i bitter noticed when i was talking with fionn regan. | ||

Jon, so I saw the Lemonheads yesterday. I have none of their albums but knew a few songs. I really enjoyed it - it was full, hot and loud in the Markthalle. The solo songs were great as well. But Evan did let us down because the band disappeared after one hour and never returned - I guess they wanted to get to the Reeperbahn (the Hamburg red light and amusement district) quickly. Yo la Tengo coming up on November 21 and Sophia on November 24. Kevin, I don't know how far your travel plans have developed but it may be worth checking out Emirates. I looked up some of their flights to Japan in connection with a business trip and they were well cheaper than Lufthansa and others. Emirates have a very good reputation and duty free shopping in Dubai is probably pretty good as well. | ||

John B I'm glad you liked The Lemonheads, its horrible suggesting something incase it turns out badly. I don't know why the band didn't return, but you'd have to say Evan Dando's not going to be the most reliable person in the world! On Friday, I saw Badly Drawn Boy in Sheffield. He seemed to be having problems with the sound, his guitars and remembering when to come in to some songs. It was the 1st date in the tour, so hopefully some things have been sorted out. Having said that, I really enjoyed it. I think its the 'Live' aspect, if you want to listen to things perfectly put the album on! The support was Isobel Campbell, but due to the Leadmill having a stupid disco-thingy on after she was on too early for me to catch, which was a real shame. Cheers Jon | ||

thanks Jon, and I was luckily aware that Evan is not the most reliable person. A few beer cups were thrown on stage when they didn't return, but that was it even though the supportive crowd deserved at least one encore. I also like the live aspect and don't mind if something goes wrong. The only bad blunder I can recall is the tape machine supporting Anne Clarke sometime in the early 80s not working properly. The crowd was furious (although they should have known that not everything would be live) and the break lasted approximately 60 minutes until the problem was fixed. | ||

Saw Roddy Frame last nite at the ICA. Good but not brilliant. I think he's better with a griup behind him. The songs all rolled into one, soem wonderful moments though where the crowd would sing elemenst of his Postacrd stuff, that was real sweet. The Wolfhounds played and were truly brilliant. Met loads of faces I have admired over the years, had a great night in London. Looking forward to Midlake in birmingham | ||

I saw King Creosote, Peter Bjorn and John, Larrikin Love and Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip) in the Shepherds Bush Empire last Thursday. I loved King Creosote's album 'KC Rules OK' and he/they did not disappoint. PBJ were lovely and funny and entertaining. However Larrikin Love were very poor. I didn't know much about them beyond their single which got some airplay on 6Music - Steve Lamacq seems quite taken with them. Their music sounds to me like a mishmash of the Pogues/ the Levellers and a tiny bit of early Aztec Camera. They seem to have a mass of rabid young fans - maybe I'm showing my age but I felt I'd seen this plenty of times before. Then to show my age even further, I went along to see The Who at the Electric Proms last night. I got given free tickets so ended up in the posh upstairs bit with a mix of journos like Neil McCormick and the odd celeb (very odd - Jimmy Nail, Paul McGann) and the powers that be at the Beeb. The Fratellis opened and struggled to engage with the audience. I like their stuff in a passive jingly jangly guitar kind of way but faced with a stony faced room full of Who fans, they raced through their set and off the stage as quickly as possible. The Who were on fine form though. They blasted through the big numbers - My Generation, Pinball Wizard etc and then did quite a few numbers from their new Rock Opera (I may have dozed off at this point). To be honest if I hadn't got the free tickets, I wouldn't have been that bothered. But I did enjoy the night. And the venue (the Roundhouse) is spectacular. | ||

Right who've I seen.... Since Badly Drawn Boy, I went to see The Loungs in Manchester at The Piccadilly Gardens Hotel, four other bands played including Loose Canon and I'm A Buffalo. They've all got MySpace's if you want to listen, very poppy and melodic. Also, Sufjan Stevens at The Academy 2 in Manchester. Excellent, if a bit weird played quite a bit off Michigan. The support was from St Vincent, who's one member of the polyphonic spree....quite nice, but not exactly my cup of tea, don't know why! The Divine Comedy was a good gig. I like Neil Hannon, and he was a bit of a pillock, which is alright in my mind! Good mix of the old and new and asking for 'requests' from the crowd. Support came from the 'hotly tipped' Duke Special, which was enjoyable, but I'm not sure I'd be flying out to get their single. Nothing until Friday when its The Magic Numbers in Liverpool. Yeah, Adam was a lovely bloke Spence. I met him again a few months after that in Limerick. He came down to see a band called Tuesday Blue and I was also at the show. He was completly unpretenscious. He had just decided quite late in the day to go to the gig and jumped in a train to Limerick from Dublin. Backstage after the gig (I knew the band so I was there) he was asking people if he could stay with them as he hadn't had time to book a room anywhere! He had brought a sleeping bag with him! I was there with a girl I worked with and really fancied and I got to use one of the greatest lines I've ever used. "Therese, this is Adam. Adam, Therese." What girl could fail to fall for the charms of such a well connected guy? Therese, that's who! Tuesday Blue later released a good single on U2's Mother Records and a not-so-good album on EMI. They played a re-union show in Limerick a couple of years back. I'd love to have been there. | ||

Watchedf The Maigic Numbers last Friday in Liverpool, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. They do have a habit of making a 3-4minute song in to a 6-7minute song which always gets my goat. The show itself was good, mixing the new album, which only came out last Monday and the first one. The played for about 1hr 25mins ish. Next up tonight is Luke Haines. Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3 really rocked last Thursday night. Peter Buck and Robyn play a lot like each other, so the blend was vey nice. Peter played a 12 string Epiphone most of the night, a Rickenbacker 6 string on a couple of songs, bass on a Minus 5 song and drums on the last encore of the night, Listening to the Higgsons! Robyn and Peter both signed my Globe of Frogs cd insert. I forgot to ask Peter about the REM G-B's tour of 1989. Darn. | ||

Luke haines was cancelled - Bugger! I've seen The Killers in Wolverhampton, an excellent gig, support from Brakes who don't do it for me. The Killers played a decent set off both albums. Last night was Scritti Politti in Manchester - an excellent mix of the (very) old and the new. Played most of the newest album, as well as Woodbeez, The Word Girl and The Sweetest Girl from the 80's. Matt, I would say that RH&TV3 will be around for a couple of years, maybe more! They already have another studio album in the can. The Sunday show two days ago in Hoboken featured 1) filming for a documentary about the next record with the Venus Three, 2) new songs from said unreleased record, and 3) Morris Windsor, of Soft Boys & Egyptians fame singing harmony and banging on a few percussion items. They will probably tour the UK next year. I dare say that Scott, Bill and Peter perfer playing with Robyn than with REM, other Bill having to break down/set up his drums while on tour. It's a great time to be a Robyn fan! | ||

Flaming Lips last Saturday in Dublin. Great occasion though sometimes I wish they'd just get on with oplaying the music as opposed to telling us what a great a night we're all going to have. All the material was from the last three albums except She Don't Use Jelly. They played Bohemian Rhapsody as an encore which was annoying, I didn't pay 50 to hear them play a Queen song. The stuff from Yoshimi and Soft Bulletin was really great, less so some of the material from AWWTM. The music, very large ballons, streamers, confetti, lights and lasers made it a memorable gig. Only regret was the lack of some older material... | ||

And assuming that some of the great guitar playing I was hearing was coming from Buck, I guess he still has it when he's inspired. So yeah, I'm willing to go with the the theory that R.E.M.'s dishwater-dull sound owes more to Stipe and Mills. | ||

Kurt, when I bought "Ole! Tarantula" I hadn't gotten anything since "Perspex Island." It's definitely still Robyn, sense of humor and occasional Beatle-ish tendencies and all. I can live without the Beatle-ish bit (yeah, I sound like Kevin) but the rest is great. There's a feel of real inspiration and enthusiasm to everything. So far, the standouts for me are the kickoff "Adventure Rocket Ship" (an answer to "Space Oddity"?), "Belltown Ramble" which I assume you'll appreciate, the silly shit-kicker title track, and the vaguely Lou Reedish ""Briggs" and "New York Doll." It's interesting how many of the songs on this album have US place references. Is he now a Brit ex-pat? | ||

On the subject of the Scream, I picked up a nice little treat today while doing some second hand vinyl shopping. For the princely sum of a fiver I bought the double vinyl copy of Screamadelica in a gatefold sleeve. Also picked up Gregory Isaacs early 80s album Out Deh(Ł2), Crooked Mile by Microdisney (Ł3) and really pleasingly Howard Devoto's Jerky Versions of The Dream. I had real pangs for this after it was discussed here a few times recently. Not bad - 4 good albums for Ł12. | ||

Spence - the Beatles "cash in" is actually really good, surprisingly good. When it comes down to it, nothing George Martin is involved in could ever be truly repulsive or a complete cash in...It's actually a very deft, clever collage/mashup of great tunes...I'm not sure if I'm using the term mashup correctly, but for instance, a vocal track from one song is grafted onto the backing track from another. All the sounds on the disc are made by the Beatles, with the exception of a new string part for "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" composed by Martin. Sounds are extracted, btw, from demo tracks, as well as the official versions of the "hits". And one more thing, if you do get it and have the dosh, shell out for the deluxe version with the DVD 5.1 surround mix...it sounds like a zillion bucks and is just a blast to listen to... The only warning is that it might be too much melodic goodness - listening to it too much might produce a sugar rush! | ||

It was done for Cirque De Soleil which, maybe it's an American thing, but is harmless enough...everybody goes to see it when they're in Vegas. He's a nice man ol george, he\ll outlive them all??, although Ringo looks ultra young and ultra ultra fit these days... dunno about his son, I am cynical there... however as I said I'll buy. Kev Crooked Mile is so underrated, some really cracking songs on there, Mrs Simpson, its beautiful. Devoto. Erm, the albums ok, patchy. He should of made a solo album with Magazine, and disguised their names!! A similar type of album by a similar artist was Theoretically Chinese by a guy called Winston Tong. Reallywonderful album. It had a super star musical cast, Jah Wobble on bass, Steve Morris (New Order) on drums, Dave Formula on keys, Alan Rankine on guitar and keys and a guy from Acertain Ratio. It ended up a real lush album, ahead of its time in many ways. Greatly overlooked. On a par with Momus on the greatly overlooked stakes. Mind you apparently Winsotn did fu*k all promotion, so there you go... You can buy it if you feel inclined, I don't think you'd regret it, but I may be wrong! | ||

Recently I've been to see The Aliens, who are most of the beta band. It weas okay, but I have to say I was a little disappointed, maybe because of my love of the beta band, who knows. We had a couple of solo singers supporting, but can't remember much about them. Last night, was The Charlatans in Sheffield, supported by The Longcut who were excellent, well worth looking out for. The Charlatans themselves played a greatest hits set and a good night was had by all! Except for a few people talking thoughout....what makes people go to gigs and talk all the way though them!!!!! Saw Pere Ubu a week ago Saturday. Keep meaning to post about it here. They were terrific - far bigger musically than the 400-capacity club they played (the same club, incidentally, the GBs played last year). I saw the Pretenders in 1995 at the Metro here, a smallish club, and it was a similar experience. Same with Gang of Four at the Metro last year. Sometimes you get to see a band in small confines who just fills up every inch of space, and then some. It's thrilling when it happens. | ||

LK Crowds are a pain, but I mainly go to smaller venues (I hate the arenas in Manchester & Sheffield). My only real complaints about crowds are people talking thoughout songs - Go to the bar if you want to talk. And being about 5ft 6inches I always seem to be stood behind someone taller!!!! Ticket prices, again its smaller venues, quite a few are under a tenner (UK Ł10). So its hardly too expensive, I drive or get a lift so no train fees and a couple of soft drinks so the whole nights about Ł20!!! I'll admit this year has been crazy, but I've not been on holiday, so that's why I've had a few more than usual. Finally, you can't beat seeing a few bands, you never know when you're going to discover a new gem. Cheers Jon | ||

Last night was Jesse Malin at the Night & Day in Manchester, two supports Tom Barker and The Bench Connection. Both supports did little for me, nothing bad, just nothing inspiring. Jesse Malin did a semi-acoustic sort of thing with just him on guitar and a woman on keyboards. A few covers by The Replacements and Bruce Springsteen, plus some new songs of his next album out early next year, and a good mix off the first two albums. Wow, first gig for a while. Out of the depths of the countryside and up to a big town (Périgueux in the Dordogne) for a night out. Actually went because a friend of our (Yonathan Avishai, a supremely talented young pianist) was the support act and he told us the main act was not to be missed. Yonathan and a percussionist Bachir Mouchali got a great reception for their music: what they do is quite ecletic and difficult to categorise exactly. But beautiful. The main act was a collaboration between Danyčl Waro, who hails from the "l'île de la Réunion" and sings in his mother tongue and Titi Robin, a French guitarist who seems to have played with a bewildering selection of different 'ethnic' musicians. The latter also happens to be one of the coolest looking people I have seen for a long time on a stage. There were 2 percussionists, bassist and accordeon player in the band and the sound was quite unlike anything I have ever heard before. An extremely rhythmic mix of African and almost 'arabic' sounds with almost 'trance' like grooves. An incredible level of energy from the stage and wonderful response from the crowd. There were obviously other people from La Réunion in the hall and there were several exchanges of friendly banter between the performers and audience, none of which I could follow sadly. But I shall definitely track down some recordings now. | ||

Having done a little digging around, seems that Waro is a major exponent of 'maloya' (Réunion equivalent of the blues) and an extremely vocal critic of French imperialism in his homeland. And the banter would have been in the 'créole' language. So all in all not just a great night out but a learning experience too. Bumped into someone in our village yesterday (who hails from Réunion) who is considering whether she will ever speak to her brother again: apparently he had neglected to tell of the gig beforehand but rang yesterday to tell her wonderful it was! | ||

Went to see The Long Blondes last night in a small Hamburg club. I like their debut album (despite the hype) and Kate Jackson surely likes to pose and move her hips. I didn't expect more than one hour of music and that is what we got. But I was a little surprised that they didn't return for an encore, the atmosphere was really good. And Giddy Stratospheres is probably my song of the year! | ||

Joe, I felt that way about the National after seeing them at the Pitchfork Music Festival here in Chicago last summer. I love it when you see someone live who you don't know well and they manage to, as my Brazilian friend says, knock your socks down. Especially to the point you want to seek out their CD. Love that name--Devotchka. Hardin, I drew a blank on "Avalon Theater" until I went on its website. This is the old Palace Theater which apparently has been taken over by another outfit this year and, hence, the new name. I've no idea, of course, how much my old Palace experience will still apply. It's a decent-sized place with a dance floor in front of the stage. I'd estimate they can put about 500 people in the place, so it's not huge. When it was the Palace, it had a piss poor sound system; really crappy sound every time I went there so I hope that's improved. There is a balcony where you can sit if you're feeling old. The only time I ever did that--shockingly--was when I saw Toots Hibbert. I was so disappointed that the Maytals weren't touring with him anymore. I don't think I can even remember all the people I've seen there, but my favorite memory is Marianne Faithfull back around the time of "Dangerous Acquaintances." The sound was shit; I couldn't hear her voice at all. No smart remarks about that being her voice. Again as the Palace, drinks were overpriced and there were no "in and out" privileges. Parking is a hassle but there's a lot across the street where they are happy to take your money. | ||

Hardin, your memory astonishes me. You are right, of course. I actually thought it was perhaps a bit less polite and maybe a bit more of a reference to a part of a girl but the glossary in the back of my copy (I never even noticed the glossary when I read it) just says "girl." | ||

WARNING: this is a very self indulgent post. I hope at least one person on the board finds something of interest! A selection of my recent gigs: THE FRANK & WALTERS (last Friday at Borderline, London) Anyone on this board into The Frank & Walters? After a 6 year absence they put a new album out last month. I knew it was in the pipeline but unfortunately I didn't realised it had come out - it was only released in Ireland and can only be bought through the record labels website. I saw them twice earlier in the year ater waiting 5 years to see them! I definately made the most of this gig! I managed to get a set list and got a photo and an autograph with Paul Linehan. Ok so I sound like a mad groupie! SHACK (last Sunday at Kings College, London) I know there are some Shack fans on the board: Dear me! I've been to loads of gigs but never seen anyone quite as much out of it as Mick Head. At least 5 times he talked into the microphone stand when unfortunately the actual mike was in his other hand! He re-started one song 3 times by saying 'oh f***'. Pretty shambolic. The band also had a new member an acoustic guitarist from Kenny. Mick introduced him before a brill version of 'Streets of Kenny' The audience (half of Liverpool) seemed in good spirits including a guy standing near to me who I eventually realised was Ian Broudie. JOE GIDEON & THE SHARK in Brixton (last monday) Joe reminds me a lot of Robert Forster Check out the band www.myspace.com/joegideonandtheshark My mates hated them! MARION at Kings College, London (last tuesday) Hadn't seen these guys since my first festival Reading '96! they have just reformed after several years away. Only 2 original members are now in the band: Phil Cunningham (who was in New Order but I think may have left now) and Jamie Harding. They had some excellent new songs and apparently don't have a record deal. Hope they get one soon! Matt, shit, I hope Head from Shack isn't back into smack, what a shame, was he pissed or stoned? or both? That band is great, I think their time is way, way too late to make a difference. I also don't think they weil ever do anything better than HMS Fable, the last album had some great songs, but HMS is sheer genius in my humble opinion. | ||

Spence, there was an article in Mojo or Uncut or some other monthly about 6 months ago which hinted very strongly, without actually saying, that Mick Head was back on smack. I also read a review in the last few days which basically said he was out of his face on stage. Sad really. | ||

He was such a 'pretty boy should've been pop star material', like Blow Monkeys Dr Robert, he had the kinda style you loved being in the pop charts, real quality songwriting, real unique, original, I reckon The Pale Fountains his previous incarnation might well be in my top 20 of all time, very influential on my life, from a musical perspective, though I make no apologies for being totally self indulgent in saying this, as I often do, it'll stop when I reach 40. morrissey. berlin, december 17, 2006. the smiths' 'this charming man' was kind of big bang. what a great song. i was a fan, but never had the chance to see them live. i enjoyed the smiths till around the time 'the meat is murder' was released. at that time i couldn't bear morrisey's cant anymore. i didn't followed his solo carreer until the 'you are the quarry' album. and this one was really great, too. so i give him a second chance and went to his concert in berlin. i don't know how much people were there, but it must a few thousands. this was a strange feeling as i am visiting generally rather more intimate concerts. but the crowd was huge and the concert started similar. 'panic' immediately made clear what you could expect from this evening. it was kind of bombastic. a gong, a kettle drum, a trumpet and a lot of differnet guitars. perfect musicians and a morrissey in a good humour. he played several smiths songs (sadly not the best ones except panic and how soon is now) and a lot of his last two albums. after more than hours - which passed fast- the show was over and i wasn't enthusiastic , but i felt good. yes, it was a big show from a big one of the show business. i think this evening will be kept in my mind | ||

But, I'm fitting one in tonight, which is Polytechnic at The Bier Keller in Manchester, with support from The Beep Seals (who used to be Jim Noir's backing band). Sorry Spence and Jonathan - I seem to end up going AWOL from the site for a week after I've posted which isn't really a good idea. I saw Shack for the first time at Stafford V Festival back in August - Mick Head seemed a completely different person (probably clean) He played guitar on every track and didn't make 1 mistake - brilliant performance. I just wonder if we will see the band live again much more after their last showing? I seriously doubt it as they don't often play live anyway. I suppose it would be mad for Phil Cunningham to leave a fantastic (and presumably well paid job) in New Order. Even when Marion get a record deal (which I'm convinced will be soon) I'm sure he could still play in New Order as they only seem to gig 3 or 4 times a year these days. Jonathan I agree with your comments on The Aliens: I saw them in Camden a couple of months ago. I too was gutted when the Beta Band split. There just wasn't the same buzz with watching the Alien's - the band were very late to take the stage and the singer even complained of feeling tired! | ||

Morrissey in Manchester was brilliant opening with Panic (and doing other smiths songs like Girlfriend in a coma, William it was really nothing and How soon is now) set the scene. The set was longer than the start of the year (don't know if it was because its a 'stadium style' tour in bigger venues). He played for about 1hr 45mins and seemed to be enjoying himself. Mozza came on and said well you seem friendly (refering to when he was booed at the apollo in Manchester for coming on to 'You'll never walk alone' which is famous with Liverpool FC). A great night, wished I could have gone back last night, which I suppose shows how much I enjoyed it! Anyway Peace to everyone and Happy Christmas to anyone who thinks that way! Cheers Jon |
