Blimey, they are out of the traps early this year, it just turned November 1. Dylan - Modern Times (this being their No1 is as predictable as Christmas Day being on the 25th December every year) 2. Scritti Pollitti - White Bread... (Would be in my top 5 this year) 3. Comets on Fire - Avatar(should keep LK happy) 4. Joanna Newsome - Ys (been dying to hear this, not released here yet) 5. Neil Young - Living War (they're having a laugh, ok, but not top 10 material) 6. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say... (see Neil Young, if I was 17 this would be my No 1) 7.Midlake - ....Vanoccupanther (hurrah for us!) 8. Hot Chip - The Warning (hurrah for me! - possibly my No 1) 9. Sufjan Stevens - The Avalanche (havent heard it, loved his last album though) 10. Thom Yorke - The Eraser (looks like I'm not out on a limb with this one - will battle with Hot Chip for my No1) Other highlights for me are Burial at No 20 (some of that Dubstep I have been banging on about) TV On The Radio at 26, YLT are at 27, Sonic Youth at 35, Lambchop 39 and Drive By Truckers keeping up the rear at 50. | ||

god i hate all these best of lists. the dylan album is okay at best with maybe three good songs on it, ditto living with war. the rest will be forgotten in six months with the exception of the arctic monkey's who'll crop up one day as the answer to a question on some daytime quiz show. my favourite album of the year (slightly contradicting what i just said) is orphans by tom waites | ||

really been missing the beautiful cynicism of abigail. that women doth terrify me! Got to agree, Dylan is bleeding boring, sorry folks. However, Midlake, is, the album I love most. Cool detached, great label, does it for me. If i were in a band now it would be Midlake, or Mulligan and O'Hare, now there's some real pop stars! | ||

Yeah Jeff/Aidan, Shack album, although a real slow burner is really beautiful. Understated. I hope it sold some. I must admit, HMS Fable still has the upper hand though. | ||

God I've been thinking about what had been great this year and i think for me it will be the reissue of John Cale-1919, the discovery of Burt Jancsh and getting a load of TVZ cheap at HMV. For new music nothing really kept on the CD player like the Midlake, I liked the Arctic Monkeys. Liking more by the day the Sonic Youth. The Yo La tengo is OK. But I've not enjoyed any new music as much as last year.Some LPs you can admire like but not love e.g. the Thom Yorke. Not heard the Tom Waits as thats not out until next week or the Jarvis Cocker. EC had a great track on his LP," Freedom for the Stallion" but the rest didn't keep me going. | ||

Off of Uncut's list, I only concur with the Midlake and Dylan. For the rest of my list, I'd have to inject the Sonic Youth (their best since Daydream Nation), Yo La Tengo, Lindsey Buckingham and Gnarls Barkley discs into the mix. I got my hot little mitts on an advance copy of Waits' Orphans and it is 3 discs of non-stop goodness. | ||

Ah, Abigail! I've wilfully avoided "Modern Times" because EVERYBODY raved about it in a way that activated my inner voice "don't believe it--it's hysteria." As a concession, I purchased a used copy of "Love and Theft." Three good songs and the rest is dull, dull, dull. I think it's still going to stop at "Blood on the Tracks" for me. Not that it really matters, but I am glad to see that Belle & Sebastian didn't make the cut. On iPod shuffle yesterday a couple of "Life Pursuit" tracks came up. They were glib, stylish and unimportant. B & S have clearly retired to that dreary phase of pop proficiency where they can emulate any sound or riff that they like and sell a lot of records and earn a lot of money but not actually make any art. And I guess that's good for them. I am curious about the current Midlake. The one I got ("Bamnan") was great for the first few tracks and then my attention drifted off. I had my five minutes of Sufjan Stevens fascination with the "Illinoise" set. But after the spinning wheels and flashing lights stop dazzling, what you have is a handful of very good songs padded by interminable busy "stuff." It's like a trip to Las Vegas. I can't imagine buying something else of his until he grows up. | ||

Randy, Seven Swans by Sufjan Stevens is a lot less busy, the songs being constructed mainly around banjo and acoustic guitar. You might prefer it to the Illinoise stuff. | ||

Randy, although I only agree with some of the things you say in your post at 04:08pm, that is one of the most entertaining posts I have read for a while. I wish I had your ability to rubbish things that I dislike, or indeed parise things that I do like. "spinning wheels and dazzling lights" and "interminable busy "stuff"" - fantastic. The strange thing is I like Sufjan, but have said here previously he needs to get somebody to show him the edit button. LK -the Tom Waits is fantastic isnt it, after his last couple of albums being a bit formulaic. | ||

Blimey! Pernice Brothers, Lambchop, Twilight Singers and now Shack...all bands which I really dig and that have been name dropped on the board of late. I discovered these bands in completely ad hock ways, yet other people clearly have a simlar taste. I'd love to know how people get to hear these bands in the beginning. Muisc magazines? I tend to steer clear these days. As a footnote, Butterfly by Shack has been going around my head for days. I reccommend going to see them live - fantastic live woodwind section. |
