What are the peeps of the board looking forward to next year music wise? I personally am looking forward to the new Wilco album, and hopefully seeing them live, a new Blue Aeroplanes album, the new Caroline Trettine album, Franz Ferdiand's 3rd album, seeing Be Good Tanyas live, and I would love to see/hear a Robert F album. I'm pretty predictable! |

The Caroline Trettine for sure, hopefully a Robert Forster. Also the Triffids reissues. Since I don't read the music press I don't know who's announcing upcoming releases and I suspect that a lot of the people I care about would be below the radar anyway. So who else I'd like to see something new by this year: 1. The Cannanes are way overdue and supposedly have several parallel projects heading toward completion. I'm hoping for the surfacing of at least one of them. 2. Vic Chesnutt. 3. Departure Lounge. A Tim Keegan solo album is an acceptable alternative. 4. Keren Ann. 5. Ed Kuepper. 6. April March. 7. The McGarrigles 8. The Plug Uglies; they've reformed and are doing shows, how about an album? 9. Linda Thompson 10. The Winnebago Orchestra 11. Spencer Roberts' selections for films that haven't been made yet. |

Kevin, you eternal optimist! It's sad, but I can't really think of much I'm terribly excited about musical that's coming up. Kristin Hersh's next solo album is #1 on my list, due out in Jan., I believe. The next RF solo album, I suppose, but I'm not holding my breath. And supposedly, the reformed Gang of Four is making an album of new material. That could be good if it doesn't turn out like the ghastly "Mall." |

Randy you're too kind, wanna run the fan club!? Am not sure when our next one is coming out, there are plans to tour next year, poss Blue Aeros support slot, amongst other things. We've got a decent set of people to play the stuff, although we will have to take the Ibook with us. I'm probably going to stick out a CD on our Oporto label of my instrumentals, and there will be a Rockingham album out too on Oporto. Caroline's 4th might come out on Oporto too. Kurt, you summed it up man ion many ways, apart from my twin gals growing up all the time which I look forward to every day, music wise its dull dull dull. What I am looking forward to is buying loads of CD's this Xmas. I am ghoing to experiment and buy stuff I have an inclination I might like, like u fellows pointed me in the direction of Midlake. That was a bonus this year. DVD's too, I adore, say adore music DVD's, Andrew Kerr lent me the GB's compilation form Rave shows, that was great, as was the Sunlight Striped DVD too, (we are so lucky to have that documented aren't we!!??) documentaries and live stuff. The Ramones was great this year and the Don Letts story of Punk. There's the Pixies out and I want to get the Beatles collections too. Oh, and there's tons of nex expandable napies and baby milk to buy too! I'll get that on the way home! |

Based on some very half-hearted research, it looks like the early new year's gonna be an indie-rock-a-thon. The Shins, the Arcade Fire and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah all have records due in the first few months. I'm interested to hear all three. I also hold out hope for: 1. A proper Lou Reed album - i.e. not "The Raven" part II 2. A new Amy Rigby CD 3. A new Spoon CD 4. A CD release for "Who's Landing in My Hangar?" by the Human Switchboard (Santa has failed me on this one for some time; may have to get religion and appeal to a higher power) 5. A live CD from the Go-Bees MK I (actually, anything GBs-related) 6. Something new from Gang of Four 7. Some new band that absolutely blows me away (see disclaimer from entry number four) |

Joe, Merritt just put out a new record, as the Gothic Archies. And, the good news is, it's really great. The best thing, to my ears, he's done since "69 Love Songs". |

Sadly, I'm not really looking forward to anything musical in the coming year. Most of my faves just put out new albums and it'd probably be unrealistic to hope for anything else new out of them for a while. I am, however, looking forward to: 1. The new (and last) season of the Sopranos 2. New season of Entourage 3. " " Rome 4. The new novel by Martin Amis 5. The continued humiliation and discrediting of Bush 43, culminating in impeachment. You may say that I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. |

Rob, even as the most diehard Lou Reed fan around, I don't hold out much hope for (1) on your list. I read some interview with him recently where he admits he hadn't written any real songs in years. He did do music for his tai chi master's DVD, though, but it's just ambient stuff, I think. By the way, I thought the music on The Raven was interesting (NOT the melodies and lyrics, though), and the backings he did for the recitations were sometimes like a more refined Metal Machine Music. But I'm not sure he has any ideas for songs anymore unless he comes up with a "big" concept. If he's going to write about what he knows, maybe it's time for him to address the problems of the elderly (he's going to be 65 next year, after all)--what's next, a scathing indictment of the breakdown of the Social Security system? |

Its actually 2 acts tonight, the last 2 are tomorrow . Whats Tivo? Is that the same as Sky+ where you record programmes to the hard disk of your satellite receiver? If it is the same, that is indeed what I intend to do. |

I think you might be right, Kurt. But I loved "Ecstasy," and still hope he'll get interested in writing songs again outside the "big" concept thing. Hey, Dylan ain't a spring chicken, and he released a pretty decent record this year as I recall. Hey, maybe if Scarlett Johanssen agrees to star in Lou's next video, that'd spur him on. |

rob, i read that the gang of four will release an album with new songs next year. this could be great. at least i hope so. a gang of four tour would be fine. last year they were booked for germany, but one of them - forgot who- broke his leg (or similar) and so they cancelled the gig. that was a big dissapointment. the new fall lp is highly awaited. i read that it will be released on my birthday, that would be great. bob dylan is coming to town. in may he will play in berlin. after years of refusal i am tenderised. my anticipation is big. the decemberists will come to germany in february. the crane wife lp isn't released here, so iam curious about that. and what about that go-betweens song-book someone talked about? that would be a fine thing. and i am still looking forward that we will sometimes live in peace and harmony together. yes, really. |

For me wishes, more dreams a great new Costello LP same for Van the Man to finish Richard Ford's book some thing musically exciting and melodious |

Yeah, it don't exactly sound like a walk in the park - Russia, gulags, etc. But I'm obsessed with "Smarty Anus", as the haters call him, so I'm gonna have to read it. His books have, honestly, gotten stranger, more depressing, and possibly not as good, as he's gone on. But hey, I think I've shown on this board that I'm a bit of a loyalist, so I stick with him. One book of his I would recommend to anybody and that is just knock-your-socks-off entertaining is "Money"... Btw Jerry, there's a new video out here of Elvis and Toussaint, I guess recorded over the course of their tour. Is it out there yet? Haven't picked it up yet, but I intend to. It's not only the loyalist thing, though: I really liked that last album they did together and I know from having seen him at the Jazz Fest in N.O., that Allen Toussaint is phenomenal live... The Richard Ford book sounds depressing..."So", I can hear you asking, "what's your point?" |

Yes Andreas, a Go-Betweens songbook would be fantastic. also, if Kraftwerk finally release a compilation and Norwegian writer Erik Fosnes Hansen publishes another book, he has been in hiding for at least seven years. I am looking forward to the new Interpol album due in summer. And yes, Andreas, Spence should definitely promote the new album with a tour - I would volunteer to show him the sites and watering holes here in Hamburg - if only to see how he holds up after 28 glasses of wine. |

I'd be on 28 glasses of water (German of course!) John, Interpol's album is long overdue. They did a STranglers in releasing the first two albums relatively close to one another, and the third needs to follow, or may we see them vanish into the bargain bins?? |

Randy, I dont mind Mojo to be honest. Now if it was Q that made it album of the month I would be worried. Two things worth considering here though. We know MES is incapable of selling out and therefore I dont think there is anything to fear. Also, it is January and not many albums get released, probably safe to assume this is the only month a Fall album could be album of the month. Have I convinced myself? |

The next My Bloody Valentine album. Not saying we will see one though. 15 years is way too long. The next Robyn Hitchcock @ The Venus 3 album, which is already recorded. Another Caitlin Cary and Thad Cochren duo album. Begonias from 2005 was my favorite album of the year. Seeing Mindy Smith in Ann Arbor on February 6th. I am hoping for a great new GoF album as well. I doubt it will be another Entertainment! I would settle for something close to Songs Of The Free. I resisted the temptation to by Mall. The one that came out in 1983 blew enough major chunks for me not to waste my money on Mall. |

Michael, I fear that if we haven't seen a new MBV album by now, we're never going to. Question is, would a full album by Kevin Shields sans the other members get called MBV? The track "City Girl" from the Lost in Translation soundtrack proves anything he does can have that sound, even without Belinda, Debbie, and Colm. But would it be the same? I have read rumors Shields has thought about a reunion tour, though. Maybe at very least we'll get a live album? |

Blimey Michael - Robyn Hitchcock & Venus 3 already have a new album post Ole Tarantula!? I've treated myself to seeing them at a second gig in the next few weeks in Norwich (I was already going to their London gig) The Norwich gig will involve me staying at my mates house and getting up at 04:30 am! Maybe this new album will scupper my number 2 wish: a new R.E.M. album (first wish is to hear a new Robert Forster record) 3. The book on Steve Kilbey being released in 2007 and maybe a Church UK tour (not likely) 4. 11 years after his last release I'm looking forward to Digsy's (he of the Oasis song 'Digsy's Dinner') new band The Sums touring and bringing out an album. 5. The new Smashing Pumpkins album and UK Tour (hopefully) 6. Sunderland being promoted to the Premiership 7. England dropping Ashley Giles for good 8. My own band getting our fingers out and starting to gig. |

There's meant to be a complete remastered back catalogue of MBV's work out this year, so perhaps we might get a tour out of them when these CDs see the light of day? I think the last thing they did was the cover of Wire's Map Ref for their tribute album in 1995..? I'd love to hear what Shields wasted Island's money on - surely there's some complete tracks in there! Well, you'd want to think so. |

Ah, I do have something to look forward to, musically speaking, in 2007, thank you Jesus. It's a new album by Lucinda Williams called "West", and it somehow flew beneath my radar until now...it's produced by Hal Willner and has Bill Frisell on it, so I'm fairly psyched. |

Please, as if that piece o' doo doo was Hal Willner's fault. What "The Raven" needed was a magician, not a producer, to redeem it. I like Willner, like the projects he's chosen and the musicians he's associated with. His productions are, for the most part, really interesting, and often great. I loved the Weill tribute, the Mingus tribute and perhaps my favorite is one I, unfortunately, let slip out of my hands: "Amacord Nino Rota"... |

Well, true enough, LK--Willner probably helped Weird Uncle Lou get the guest stars on the album, but the incredibly bad idea of the record itself was not his. And he has done a lot of notable productions and tribute albums. But I wonder what shift of direction his presence indicates for Lucinda? With Bill Frisell aboard also, I wonder if this is going to be a real departure for her. Maybe she wants to try something outside of the alt-country/roots style she's generally pegged as. |

I say "Go, Hal." I'm a huge LW fan, but I'd love to hear her stretch out a bit. If Willner can be a bit excessive, Williams can be a bit conservative, and I'd be very interested to hear the result of their yin and yang. |

Yeah Rob and Kurt, it could be interesting, could be a marriage made in heaven...then again it could really suck. Overall though it seems like a nice contrast - Lu's rootsy alt- country thing, Hal's artsy-fartsy eclecticism. Be nice to hear the Lu in some different kinds of settings. It seems to me that she's avoiding the biggest trap - making the same album over and over again. Randy's "torch" remark confused me, because I like torchy stuff, that's not necessarily a diss for me. And, one possibly underrated album of hers is "Essence", which was a bit of a detour in itself - it strikes me that some of the songs on it are quite torchy, like "Lonely Girls" and "Blue" (it makes me wonder what Willner could do with 'em)... I've downloaded a bunch of recent concerts of hers that feature a lot of new songs, and I've gotta say they sound pretty magnificent. Apparently, Lu's mother, or as she'd say "Mama", died recently, so that subject features prominently, in songs like "Fancy Funeral". Nobody has really written better about sex and death since Lou Reed. Maybe that's another good reason for the Willner connection. Btw Kurt, you think HW jumped on that Raven thing just for the chance to work with Lou? That's gotta be great resume material. In the same way, actors still line up to act in Woody Allen movies, though his output of late hasn't been all that (the last two weren't bad, to be fair). Rob, why am I not surprised yer into Lucinda, too? |

LK, Willner had worked with Lou before--he coproduced "Ecstasy" as well, which was a (mostly) very good album. And they go back as far as the Weill "Lost in the Stars" tribute album in the '80s. Your Lou/Woody analogy is very apt: two NYC legends who are still productive, but have fallen from grace and are dismissed or mocked by many...but are still capable of good work. I think Lucinda is too good of a songwriter for any album she makes to be a disaster. "Essence" was not received as well as others, but I know a lot of fans of hers who love it. I thought it was a little bit samey--after about the halfway mark, I was dying to hear a different tempo or arrangement. And while the last album addressed that problem, I thought it was probably the least sharp batch of songs I've heard from her. Like any great writer, she'll probably respond with especially heartfelt and inspired songs, so the next album could be a corker. By the way, I have friends in SF who are Lucinda fanatics--they've seen her live every chance possible the past 10 years--and they say her most recent show was the best they'd ever seen from her, and that she was much happier and friendly with the audience than ever before. |

Hmmm, you know, I don't think I ever heard Lou's "Ecstasy" - I'll have to check it out. I think I was put off by the scary "Lou in orgasm" cover. Note to Marketing Dept.: not one of your better strategies... I'd love to hear Lu backed by some of those esoteric musicians that hang around the periphery of that NY scene - you probably know their names, Kurt. Exciting news from your pals in SF, too - I can't wait for the new one (coming out in Feb.)... Long as she doesn't try any more "rap songs"... |

I probably haven't heard enough Wilner productions so my comment might have been unfair. I associate him with retro torchy records and I just don't hear Lucinda doing one of those. Theoretically it made sense for Marianne Faithfull but the result was tepid. Lucinda has edge, lots of it. I fear Wilner would plane that right off. And I really don't hear her hickey vocals in a torch context. |

Lucinda with Bill Frizell? Cool!! Maybe a more jazzy direction for Lu then? If anyone is interested in checking out a great Bill Frizell record, Bill Frizell with Dave Holland and Elvin Jones (Nonesuch 79624-2)is great. Not only do you get Bill's chops on guitar, but Dave Holland is the best jazz bassist around and Elvin was of course, Coltrane's drummer, as well as a jazz legend. My connection with Lu, we are seperated in age by only 5 days. Me: January 21, 1953, Lu: January 26, 1953. |

I hope you're holding up as well as she is, Michael. She's a pretty sexy 50-something, if you ask me. You could go broke buying Frisell records, couldn't you? I have a bunch, but I don't have that one - I'll have to seek that out. It's probably too ambient and wimpy for you, but I think my fave of the ones I have is "Have a Little Faith". Now, if only her new record has Marc Ribot on it, too - then I'll really be in guitar-geek heaven. |

Lucinda with Marc Ribot backing her would be very interesting indeed. She did let her lead guitarist rip at times on the last album, so it's not out of the realm of possibility. |

LK, I am holding up pretty well, thanks. I have never been one to bake out in the sun on a constant basis due to my fair skin, and I can pass as a early 40 something, no problem. My youthfullness did pose some problems in my late teenage years though, as I looked more like a freshman in high school than a freshman in college! I am glad those days are over. |

Hardin have you seen Lucinda up close? A lesbian friend of mine who loves Lucinda described her as a cross between Nina Hagen and Phyllis Diller. I have to admit that when I moved up close to the stage to see for myself after she made that comment, yeah, she got it just about right. Two years ago anyway. I can pass for 50. |

No Randy, I haven't seen her up close - only seen her up on stage from tens of feet away and in pictures...thanks for raining on my parade, dude! |

My friends in SF who love Lucinda and see all her shows are lesbians too, and say LW has a big following in that community. They were up front for her last show, but didn't mention the Hagen/Diller thing. I don't think Lucinda has been exactly eating health food, drinking milk, and going to bed early for the last 30 years at least, so she might be a somewhat...weathered, I guess...50. The album photos are usually pretty soft-focus, I've noticed. |

Damn, you guys really love to harsh my mellow! I was going to say that at least her body still looks good, but you buzz-killers will probably tell me she has bad cellulite! Interesting that LW has a following in the Sapphic community, though hardly surprising, I guess.... |

Something I think hasn't been mentioned yet that's moved to the top of my "looking forward to list": the new Arcade Fire album. http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/ne ws/40322/Arcade_Fire_Reveal_Tracklist_Re lease_Date_More_S |

Color me envious, Michael. I hope they're good, though I'm starting to develop the suspicion that they might be one of those groups that just don't come off live...here's hoping they have a good night when you see 'em! |
