The brother has gone, I saw the guy n telly the other week, it was a recent show, I couldn't believe how agile he was, he moved like a mother f*cker! First bought some of his tuff when I was 15. A particular fave of mine was a 12'' called Bring it on. What a day to pass away. God rest his soul. |

Woke up early to do battle with my Christmas turkey and heard the news on NPR. Very sad. I hadn't planned on it, but I guess my marathon kitchen session today will have "Star Time" as its soundtrack. What a gift. |

I've got "Motherlode" playing as we speak, with "Sex Machine" (the album, that is) up next...best wishes to his survivors as well. |

There is a James Brown doc on Artsworld tonight at 8:15pm. Wonder if they will still show it, or put it on hold for a day or two? |

Kev, people throw around the word "legend" a lot these days, but you nailed it. If anyone deserves the tag, it's James Brown. Playing "Star Time," I'm struck by the number of bands that wouldn't exist if it weren't for Brother James. It's like listening to Afrobeat, funk and rap being born. My turkey my prove a disappointment, but it basted in hard soul all morning. Yum. |

Hello everyone--I haven't had net access since Friday until today, and even now, I just have it for a few minutes. But I have to get on the board to say RIP to the Godfather of Soul, who was one of the true giants of popular music, right up there with anyone who came out of the 20th century. And even though a lot of funk came after JB, I don't think anyone was ever funkier. I'm not sure exactly what dying on Christmas signifies, but somehow, I feel that's how JB would have wanted to make his final exit. Hope everyone had a great Christmas! |

When I was a kid in the 60s in California the standard radio format was Top 40 AM. So you had to listen to a bit of everything. James Brown was a regular fixture on the hit parade back then. I, of course, being a dumb young suburban white kid, thought his music was ugly. But even while I hated it, there was a snake-like fascination to songs like "I Got You" and "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and "It's a Man's Man's World." Especially "I Got You." I wasn't ready for music so far from my narrow little social experience at that time but of course it was inevitable that the day would come when I'd buy a James Brown antho and I well remember the year when that was in pretty constant heavy rotation at my house. It was 1988. But to get to James Brown properly, I had to first go through things a little easier for me, like reggae and the Steve Cropper-inflected Atlantic soul sound and even Motown. In my view the highest achievement for an artist is to be authentic. James Brown was thoroughly authentic, as authentic as Johnny Cash. |

James Brown has influenced more than anyone in modern music. An unbeatable performer & the most sampled artist ever. |

I hate the way the RS site streams video--I can't get to the end of the Christgau discussion of James Brown without it stalling, then timing out. What I heard was certainly interesting. He's a lot more straightforward with his talking than his writing. |

I love the irony of having this pencil-necked academic type pontificating so learnedly about funk. But, ya know, why the hell not? It's at least as important music as anything by say, Mozart, or any of them dead ole European dudes... |
